Year Calculator Between Two Dates: Years, Months and Days
The calculator for this page is switched off while it is checked. The formula is below, and the worked example in the article shows how to use it by hand.
A year calculator between two dates finds the elapsed time from a start date to an end date, expressed here as an average number of years. Enter both dates as years, months and days; the calculator returns the elapsed calendar days and an approximate year total, using 365.2425 days per year. This is useful for a quick comparison, but it is not the same as counting completed anniversaries.
Formula
This calculator estimates elapsed days from the difference in calendar years, months and days, then divides that estimate by the average Gregorian year length:
- Estimated days = (end year − start year) × 365.2425 + (end month − start month) × 30.436875 + (end day − start day)
- Approximate years = estimated days ÷ 365.2425
Here, each year is entered as a calendar year number, each month as 1 through 12, and each day as its day number in that month. The constants 365.2425 days per year and 30.436875 days per month represent average Gregorian calendar lengths; a month is not actually that many days in every calendar month. The output is therefore an estimate, not a date-aware count of days.
Worked Example
Using the calculator’s default dates, January 1, 2020 to January 1, 2025:
- Year difference: 2025 − 2020 = 5 years. Estimated days from years: 5 × 365.2425 = 1,826.2125.
- Month difference: 1 − 1 = 0, so the month contribution is 0 × 30.436875 = 0.
- Day difference: 1 − 1 = 0. Estimated elapsed days are 1,826.2125, displayed to two decimals as 1,826.21 days.
- Divide by 365.2425: 1,826.2125 ÷ 365.2425 = 5. The approximate elapsed time is 5.0000 years.
What a Year Calculator Tells You
“Years between dates” can mean more than one thing. It might mean the number of full years completed, a calendar interval such as “5 years, 2 months and 3 days,” or a decimal value suitable for a rough duration comparison. These are different results, and the right one depends on the task.
This calculator uses an average-year conversion. It treats every year as 365.2425 days and every month as an average month, so it is convenient for an approximate decimal answer but does not inspect whether February had 28 or 29 days. For a precise count of elapsed days, use actual calendar dates and a date-aware day-count tool. For anniversaries, compare the month and day as well as the year.
Completed Years Versus Decimal Years
Completed years count anniversaries reached by the end date. For example, from June 15, 2020 to June 14, 2025, fewer than five complete anniversary years have passed, even though the dates’ year numbers differ by five. On June 15, 2025, five full years have elapsed. A decimal-year calculation instead divides a duration by a selected year length; its answer can be slightly different depending on the day-count convention.
This distinction matters for age, service duration, contracts, records and other situations where the exact rule may define how dates are counted. A generic calculator cannot determine a governing policy or convention. Check the instructions for the relevant form or process rather than assuming an average-year estimate is the required answer.
How to Use the Calculator
- Enter the start date’s year, month and day in the first three fields.
- Enter the end date in the last three fields, using the same calendar.
- Read the estimated elapsed days and approximate elapsed years.
- Confirm that the end date is not earlier than the start date. This calculator is intended for forward intervals, not negative durations.
For an exact calendar interval, first establish whether the start date and end date are included. “Days between” commonly means the elapsed difference, not a count that includes both endpoint dates. For instance, from Monday to Tuesday is one elapsed day, although listing both calendar dates gives two dates.
Common Errors and Limitations
- Mixing up date fields: Enter months as 1–12, not as names or zero-based month numbers. A date such as March 4 should be entered as month 3 and day 4.
- Entering an impossible date: The arithmetic formula does not validate dates. It can accept a day such as 31 for a month that has only 30 days, producing a misleading estimate.
- Expecting exact leap-year handling: The average year accounts for leap years over long periods but does not identify which specific years are leap years.
- Overreading decimal places: Four decimal places are a display choice, not proof that the result is exact. The underlying month approximation limits precision.
- Using it for a defined convention: Financial, legal, employment or administrative calculations may prescribe a particular counting method. This general calculator does not supply that rule.
If the start date is after the end date, swap the dates to calculate a positive forward interval. If you need an exact number of days, use a calendar-aware calculation that validates month lengths and leap days. For a human-readable answer, count complete anniversaries first, then the remaining months and days.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate years between two dates?
Decide whether you need completed calendar years or a decimal duration. For an approximate decimal result, estimate elapsed days and divide by an agreed year length; for exact calendar years, count completed anniversaries.
Does this calculator count leap years?
It uses an average Gregorian year of 365.2425 days, rather than checking each leap year between the dates. It is useful for an estimate, not an exact calendar-day count.
How many years are between January 1, 2020 and January 1, 2025?
There are five completed calendar years between those matching dates. This calculator also reports 5.0000 approximate years for its default dates.
Is a decimal year the same as years, months and days?
No. A decimal year represents a duration as a fraction of a chosen year length. A calendar interval names complete years, months and leftover days, whose lengths vary.
Can I use this to calculate age?
It can provide an approximate duration, but age is normally expressed in completed birthdays. Compare the birth month and day with the date being measured to determine whether the birthday has occurred that year.
