Screen Time Apple Arcade: How It Works

Apple Arcade games count toward your iPhone or iPad Screen Time limits, so you can manage them like any other app category. This article explains how Screen Time reports Apple Arcade, how to set limits specifically for it, and what to do when your settings don’t seem to work.

Formula

The calculator computes the total minutes you allow for Apple Arcade over a period: Total allowed (min) = Daily limit (min) × Days in period. The second output converts that total to hours by dividing by 60. All inputs are plain numbers; the daily limit is in minutes, and the days are a count.

Worked Example

Suppose you set a 60-minute daily limit and want to know your weekly allowance. Multiply 60 by 7 to get 420 minutes, then divide by 60 to get 7 hours. The calculator shows 420 min and 7.00 hours for the default values.

How Screen Time Categorizes Apple Arcade

Apple Arcade games appear under the Games category in Screen Time, not as a separate “Apple Arcade row. When you open Settings > Screen Time > See All Activity, you’ll see total game usage, and tapping that category reveals which games were used and for how long. Apple Arcade titles are mixed with any other games you have installed, so you can’t filter by subscription in the default view.

To see only Apple Arcade usage, you can look at the list of individual apps under the Games category. Each arcade game is listed by name, so you can add a limit per game. However, there is no global “limit all Apple Arcade games switch—you have to set limits per game or use the overall Games category limit.

Setting a Limit for Apple Arcade

You can limit Apple Arcade in two ways:

  • Limit the Games category: Go to Settings > Screen Time > App Limits > Add Limit, choose Games, and set a time. This applies to all games, including Apple Arcade.
  • Limit individual arcade games: In App Limits, tap Add Limit, then select specific games from the list. You can add multiple arcade titles to one limit.

When a limit is reached, the app icon dims and a notification appears. You can tap “Ignore Limit to allow more time, but that requires a Screen Time passcode if you’ve set one.

Why Apple Arcade Might Not Show Up

Sometimes Apple Arcade usage doesn’t appear in Screen Time, or limits don’t seem to work. Common reasons include:

  • Screen Time is off: Check that Screen Time is enabled in Settings > Screen Time.
  • No usage yet: If you haven’t played any arcade games since enabling Screen Time, the category won’t show.
  • Device not updated: Older iOS versions may have bugs with app limits. Update to the latest iOS.
  • “Share Across Devicesâ€ is off: If you want limits to apply on your iPad and iPhone, enable Share Across Devices in Screen Time settings.

If limits still don’t apply, try restarting the device, then check that the limit is set for “Every Day or the specific days you want.

Comparing Screen Time to Other Parental Controls

Screen Time is Apple’s built-in tool, but it has alternatives. For example, you can use Downtime to block all apps except those you allow during certain hours—this works for Apple Arcade too. Or you can use App Limits for fine-grained control. Third-party parental control apps often offer more detailed reports, but they may require configuration profiles and can be less reliable after iOS updates. For most families, Screen Time is sufficient and free.

Common Misconceptions

One misconception is that Apple Arcade games are “educational and bypass Screen Time. They are not—they’re treated like any other game. Another is that deleting an arcade game removes its usage data. It doesn’t; Screen Time keeps history for the past week. Also, turning off Screen Time does not delete usage logs immediately—it may take a day or two to clear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Screen Time track Apple Arcade separately?

No, it tracks all games together under the Games category. You can see individual arcade games in the list, but there’s no separate “Apple Arcade section.

Can I set a time limit for Apple Arcade only?

Yes, by adding a limit for each arcade game individually. You can select multiple games in one limit, but you can’t limit the entire subscription at once.

Why did my child’s Apple Arcade limit not work?

Check that the limit is enabled, the device is updated, and that Screen Time is on. Also, make sure the child is using their own Apple ID and not a shared one.

Does Screen Time work on Mac for Apple Arcade?

Yes, Screen Time is available on macOS. You can set app limits for games on a Mac, and they sync if you use the same Apple ID and have Share Across Devices enabled.

Can I see how much time I spent on Apple Arcade yesterday?

Yes, open Screen Time and tap “See All Activity. Use the day selector to view yesterday’s usage, then tap Games to see the list of arcade games with their times.
