Galaxy S10 Private Mode: How to Use It

The Galaxy S10’s private mode (officially called Secure Folder) lets you hide apps, photos, and files behind a separate lock. You set it up once, then access it with your fingerprint, PIN, or pattern. This guide explains how to turn it on, move content in, and fix common issues.

What Is Private Mode on the Galaxy S10?

Samsung removed the old “Private Mode” toggle after Android 7 and replaced it with Secure Folder on all newer Galaxy phones, including the S10. It creates an encrypted vault on your phone that is separate from your main storage. Apps inside it run as copies, so you can have two of the same app (for example, two WhatsApp accounts). Photos and documents moved into Secure Folder are removed from their original location and can only be seen when the folder is unlocked.

Unlike simply hiding files, Secure Folder uses Samsung’s Knox security platform to encrypt the data. Even if someone connects the phone to a computer, they cannot read the contents without your passcode.

How to Enable Secure Folder on Galaxy S10

Secure Folder is built into every Galaxy S10, but you need to activate it before first use. Here is how:

  1. Open the Settings app (the gear icon).
  2. Scroll down and tap Biometrics and security.
  3. Tap Secure Folder.
  4. Tap Continue and sign in with your Samsung account. If you do not have one, create it free.
  5. Choose a lock method for the folder: pattern, PIN, or password. You can also allow fingerprint unlock later.
  6. Tap Confirm and wait a few seconds while the folder is created.

Once set up, you will see a Secure Folder icon in your app drawer. If you do not see it, check the Samsung folder in the apps list.

How to Move Files and Apps Into Secure Folder

There are two main ways to add content:

  • Files (photos, videos, documents): Open the My Files app, navigate to the file you want to hide, tap and hold it, then tap Move to Secure Folder from the menu. The file is now encrypted and removed from its original folder.
  • Apps: Open Secure Folder, tap the + icon, and select apps from your installed list. The app will be installed as a separate copy inside the folder. You can also download new apps directly from the Galaxy Store inside Secure Folder.

To move a photo from the Gallery app, open the photo, tap the three-dot menu, and choose Move to Secure Folder. The photo will disappear from your main gallery.

How to Set Up Auto-Lock and Notifications

By default, Secure Folder locks when you turn off the screen. You can change this:

  1. Open Secure Folder and tap the three-dot menu (top right).
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Under Auto lock, choose Immediately, After 5 minutes, or After 10 minutes.
  4. Under Notifications, you can hide content from notifications so no previews appear on the lock screen.

You can also add Secure Folder to your home screen for quick access, or hide it entirely so it only appears in the app drawer.

Common Problems and Fixes

Here are the most frequent issues Galaxy S10 owners run into and how to solve them:

  • Forgot the Secure Folder password: Tap Forgot? on the lock screen. You will be asked to sign in with your Samsung account to reset it. If you do not remember that either, you will have to reset Secure Folder, which deletes everything inside.
  • Secure Folder not showing up: Go to Settings > Biometrics and security > Secure Folder and toggle it on. If it is already on, restart your phone.
  • Files disappeared from main storage after moving: That is normal – they are now inside Secure Folder. Open Secure Folder and check the My Files section.
  • App inside Secure Folder crashes: Some apps (especially banking apps) do not run inside Secure Folder because they detect the virtual environment. Try updating the app, or use it normally instead.
  • Secure Folder takes up too much space: Each app inside is a full copy, so two versions of a 500 MB game use 1 GB total. Delete apps you do not need from inside the folder.

Privacy and Security Limitations

Secure Folder is secure against casual snooping and most hacking attempts, but it is not absolute. If you forget your Samsung account password and cannot verify your identity, you lose access to the data inside – there is no backdoor. Also, if someone has your fingerprint and you have fingerprint unlock enabled, they can open the folder. For maximum security, disable fingerprint unlock and use a long PIN.

Another limitation: Secure Folder does not hide the fact that it exists. Someone can see the icon and know you have a private area. If you want to hide the icon entirely, go to Secure Folder settings and toggle Add Secure Folder to Home screen off, and it will only appear in the app drawer. There is no way to make it completely invisible without third-party apps, which are not recommended.

Alternatives to Secure Folder

If you do not want to use Samsung’s solution, there are a few other options:

  • Gallery Hide feature: In the Gallery app, tap and hold a photo, then tap the three-dot menu and choose Move to Private. This hides photos in a password-protected area, but it only works for media, not apps or files.
  • Third-party vault apps: Apps like Keepsafe or Photo Vault can hide photos behind a PIN, but they are less secure than Knox and may not encrypt data as strongly.
  • Multiple users: You can create a separate user profile on the phone (Settings > Accounts and backup > Users). Each user has their own apps and files, but switching users is more cumbersome than unlocking a folder.

For most people, Secure Folder is the best balance of security and convenience on a Galaxy S10.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Secure Folder work on Galaxy S10? Yes, it is built into every Galaxy S10 and runs on Android 9 and later. It works exactly as described in this guide.

Can I move apps to Secure Folder without reinstalling? No, the app is copied and reinstalled inside the folder. You will have two separate app icons and two sets of data. You cannot move an existing app’s data into the folder automatically.

Will Secure Folder sync to Samsung Cloud? By default, it does not sync. You can enable backup in Secure Folder settings, but it is safer to keep it off for maximum privacy.

What happens if I reset my phone? A factory reset erases Secure Folder and everything inside it. Make sure you back up anything important before resetting.

Can I use Secure Folder without a Samsung account? No, you need a Samsung account to set it up. You can create one free with any email address.

Is Secure Folder the same as Private Mode on older Samsung phones? No, Private Mode was a simpler feature that only hid files. Secure Folder is more secure and also hides apps.
