Dying Light 2 Co-Op: Check Access Time & Platform

Dying Light 2 co-op lets you team up with up to three other players, but access isn’t immediate—you must finish the game’s prologue first, and cross-platform play is not available. This article explains exactly when co-op unlocks, how to invite friends, and which platforms can play together.

Formula

The co-op unlock time is roughly the prologue duration minus about 45 minutes, because the prologue’s final section (the “Old Villedor” intro) is single-player only. In words: Co-op unlock time = Prologue time – 45 minutes. If you enter the prologue time in minutes, the calculator returns the approximate minute when co-op becomes available. The 45-minute figure is an average based on typical playthroughs; your actual time may vary by a few minutes depending on how quickly you complete objectives and watch cutscenes.

Worked Example

Using the default value of 90 minutes for the prologue:

  1. Start with the prologue time: 90 minutes.
  2. Subtract 45 minutes (the single-player-only segment): 90 – 45 = 45 minutes.
  3. The result is 45 minutes—so co-op unlocks about 45 minutes into your first playthrough.

That matches the calculator’s output of 45 minutes. In practice, most players unlock co-op after completing the mission “The Only Way Out” and reaching the Bazaar, which typically takes 40–60 minutes.

When Does Co-Op Unlock?

Co-op becomes available after you complete the prologue, which ends when you reach the Bazaar and meet the Survivors. The exact mission is called “The Only Way Out.” Until that point, the game forces single-player. The prologue includes a lengthy tutorial, a chase sequence, and a boss fight—so it’s not skippable. If you’re playing with a friend who hasn’t finished the prologue, they won’t be able to join your game or receive an invite until they do.

How to Invite and Join

Once co-op is unlocked, the process is straightforward:

  • From the pause menu, select Online and set your game to Public, Friends Only, or Invite Only.
  • To invite a specific friend, open the Social tab, highlight their name, and choose Invite to Game.
  • To join a friend, select their name from the Social tab and choose Join Game—if their session is open to friends.
  • You can also use the platform’s native invite system (e.g., PlayStation, Xbox, Steam) to send a game invite directly.

Note that co-op is limited to 4 players total, including the host. There is no split-screen; each player needs their own copy of the game and their own screen.

Platform Compatibility: Who Can Play Together?

Dying Light 2 does not support cross-platform play. That means:

  • PC players can only play with other PC players (Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG are all PC, but they are treated as separate platforms—so a Steam player cannot join an Epic player unless they are on the same storefront).
  • PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 players can play together, since Sony treats them as the same platform family.
  • Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S players can play together, as Microsoft does the same.
  • Nintendo Switch (cloud version) players can only play with other Switch players.
  • There is no cross-play between PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch.

This is a common point of confusion, especially because the game’s predecessor, Dying Light, did support cross-play on PC (Steam and GOG). Dying Light 2 does not, and the developers have not announced any plans to add it.

Common Problems and Solutions

Players often run into a few recurring co-op issues:

  • Can’t join because the host hasn’t unlocked co-op—the host must complete the prologue first. There’s no workaround.
  • Invite not showing up—check your platform’s privacy settings. On PlayStation, ensure your party is set to “Friends Only or “Public; on Xbox, check your online status and privacy settings; on Steam, make sure you’re not in “Invisible mode.
  • Connection drops or lag—Dying Light 2 uses peer-to-peer connections, so the host’s internet speed matters. If you’re lagging, try having the player with the fastest upload speed host.
  • Progress not saving for the joining player—only the host’s story progress is saved. A joining player keeps their character’s level, items, and skills, but their story missions do not advance. To progress your own story, you must play as host.
  • Can’t see your friend’s game in the lobby—make sure both of you are on the same platform and that you’ve set your privacy to “Friends Only or “Public.

How Co-Op Affects Gameplay and Progression

When you play co-op, the host’s world is the one you explore. The joining player brings their own character, including their level, gear, and unlocked skills. Enemies scale to the host’s level, but the joining player’s damage is adjusted to be roughly in line with the host’s, so a low-level player can still contribute. However, you cannot complete story missions in a friend’s world and have them count toward your own playthrough—only the host’s story advances. Side quests, parkour challenges, and exploration rewards do carry over for the joining player, but story-critical missions do not.

There is also a co-op exclusive feature: you can trade items with other players, and you can revive each other when downed. If you die in co-op, you enter a “downed state and a teammate can revive you; if no one does, you respawn at a safe zone after a timer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play co-op from the very start of the game?

No. You must complete the prologue, which ends with the mission “The Only Way Out.” This typically takes 40–60 minutes, though it can be longer if you explore. After that, co-op is unlocked permanently for that save file.

Is Dying Light 2 cross-platform?

No. Dying Light 2 does not support cross-platform play. PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch are all separate ecosystems. Even within PC, Steam and Epic Games Store versions are not cross-compatible.

Can I play co-op with a friend who is on a different console generation?

Yes, within the same console family. PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 players can play together, and Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S players can play together. But a PlayStation player cannot join an Xbox player, and a PC player cannot join either.

Does the joining player’s story progress save?

No. Only the host’s story progress is saved during co-op. The joining player keeps their character’s level, skills, and inventory, but any story missions completed in the host’s world do not count toward their own campaign. To advance your own story, you must play as host.

How many players can play co-op?

Up to four players can play together in a single session. There is no split-screen; each player needs their own copy of the game and their own console or PC.

Why can’t I join my friend’s game even though we’re on the same platform?

Check the host’s privacy settings—they must be set to “Friends Only or “Public. Also, ensure the host has completed the prologue. If the issue persists, restart both games and try again. On PC, make sure you’re both using the same storefront (Steam, Epic, or GOG).
