Days Weeks Years Calculator: How It Works
- Years

- Days
- 365 days
- You entered
This calculator converts a duration between days, weeks, and years. You enter a number in any unit, and it instantly shows the equivalent in the other two units, using standard calendar definitions. The result is a precise decimal, so you can use it for planning, scheduling, or just understanding time spans.
Formula
The calculator uses three simple conversions:
- Days to weeks: weeks = days ÷ 7
- Days to years: years = days ÷ 365.25
- Weeks to days: days = weeks × 7
- Years to days: days = years × 365.25
Here, days is the input number of days, weeks is the equivalent number of weeks, and years is the equivalent number of years. The factor 365.25 accounts for leap years (one extra day every four years on average).
Worked Example
Using the default input of 365 days:
- Weeks: 365 ÷ 7 = 52.142857… → 52.14 weeks (rounded to 2 decimals)
- Years: 365 ÷ 365.25 = 0.999315… → 0.999 years (rounded to 3 decimals)
So 365 days is about 52.14 weeks or 0.999 years. Notice that 365 days is slightly less than one average year because a year includes the leap-day fraction.
Why Use 365.25 Days per Year?
A common question is why we don’t simply use 365 days. The reason is that the Earth’s orbit around the Sun takes about 365.2422 days (the tropical year). To keep calendars aligned, we add an extra day every four years (leap year), giving an average of 365.25 days per year over a 4-year cycle. For most everyday purposes, 365.25 is accurate enough; for exact astronomical calculations, you’d use 365.2422 or even more precise values.
Common Mistakes and Misconceptions
- Using 365 instead of 365.25: For long spans (decades or centuries), the difference accumulates. Over 100 years, it’s about 25 days – a noticeable error.
- Rounding too early: If you round weeks to 52 and then multiply by 7, you get 364 days, which is off by one. Always keep full precision until the final step.
- Confusing calendar years with fiscal years: Some businesses use a 360-day year for interest calculations. This calculator uses the calendar convention, not financial conventions.
- Forgetting leap years: A specific span like January 1, 2020 to January 1, 2021 is 366 days, not 365. This calculator gives the average, not the exact count for a particular interval.
How to Read the Results
The weeks result is a decimal, not a whole number. For example, 52.14 weeks means 52 full weeks plus 0.14 of a week (about 1 day). If you need whole weeks, you’d round down or up depending on context. The years result is also a decimal; 0.999 years is almost one full year but not quite. For practical planning, you might round to 1 year, but for precise calculations (like interest accrual), keep the decimal.
When to Use This Calculator
Use it whenever you need to convert between these units, such as:
- Project planning: “We have 90 days – how many weeks is that?
- Age calculations: “My dog is 3 years old – how many weeks is that?
- Travel planning: “A 2-week trip is how many days?
- Academic deadlines: “The semester is 15 weeks – how many days?
- Contract durations: “A 1-year lease is how many days?
For exact day counts between two specific dates, use a date difference calculator instead, because months and years have varying lengths.
Limitations of the Formula
This calculator assumes a fixed conversion factor. It does not account for:
- Leap seconds (added occasionally to atomic time)
- Different definitions of a year (tropical, sidereal, Julian, Gregorian)
- Calendar months (which vary from 28 to 31 days)
- Time zones or daylight saving changes
For most everyday uses, these differences are negligible. But if you’re doing scientific or legal work that requires exactness, you need a more precise tool that considers the specific dates involved.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many weeks are in a year?
There are 52 weeks and 1 day in a common year (365 days), or 52 weeks and 2 days in a leap year (366 days). That’s why a year is about 52.18 weeks on average (365.25 ÷ 7).
Why is a year 365.25 days and not 365?
Because the Earth’s orbit takes about 365.2422 days. The Julian calendar used 365.25 to simplify, and the Gregorian calendar refines it further. The 0.25 accounts for the extra day added every four years.
How do I convert weeks to days manually?
Multiply the number of weeks by 7. For example, 3 weeks × 7 = 21 days. For fractional weeks, like 2.5 weeks, multiply 2.5 × 7 = 17.5 days.
Is a month exactly 4 weeks?
No. Only February in a non-leap year is exactly 4 weeks (28 days). All other months are 30 or 31 days, which is more than 4 weeks. So a month is not a fixed number of weeks.
What is the difference between a calendar year and a tropical year?
A calendar year is the civil year used for everyday purposes (365 or 366 days). A tropical year is the time it takes Earth to complete one orbit around the Sun, about 365.2422 days. The calendar is designed to stay in sync with the tropical year via leap years.
Can I use this for calculating age in years and days?
Yes, but only approximately. If you know someone’s age in days, you can divide by 365.25 to get years. For an exact age, you’d need the specific birth date and current date, because leap years and month lengths vary.
