Years to Days: How to Convert & Calculate

This calculator converts a number of years into days, accounting for leap years. Enter the number of years and the starting year (to determine which years are leap years), and you’ll get the exact number of days, plus the number of weeks and the average days per year. The calculation below uses the Gregorian calendar rules.

Formula

The basic formula for converting years to days is:

Days = Years × 365 (for a common year)

But because a solar year is actually about 365.2422 days, we add leap days. The Gregorian calendar uses this rule:

Days = Years × 365 + LeapDays

Where LeapDays is the number of leap years in the period. A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except if it is divisible by 100 but not by 400. So the number of leap days in a span of N years starting at year S is:

LeapDays = floor(N/4) − floor(N/100) + floor(N/400) (approximately, using the starting year as a reference).

Variables:

  • Years – the number of years you want to convert (unit: years, no dimension).
  • Start year – the calendar year from which you start counting (unit: year, e.g., 2024).
  • Days – the total number of days in that period (unit: days).

For a single year, the exact number of days is either 365 (common year) or 366 (leap year). For a multi-year period, you must count the leap years that fall within it.

Worked Example

Using the calculator defaults: 5 years starting in 2024.

Step 1: Count the leap years in the period. The years are 2024, 2025, 2026, 2027, 2028. Leap years: 2024 and 2028 (both divisible by 4, not by 100). So 2 leap years.

Step 2: Compute total days = 5 × 365 + 2 = 1825 + 2 = 1827 days.

Step 3: Weeks = 1827 / 7 = 261.0 weeks (since 1827 = 7 × 261).

Step 4: Average days per year = 1827 / 5 = 365.40 days/year.

The calculator gives the same result: 1827 days, 261.0 weeks, 365.40 days/year.

When to Use This Conversion

You might need to convert years to days for many practical reasons:

  • Calculating age in days for a milestone (e.g., a 10,000-day birthday).
  • Estimating the number of days in a contract, lease, or warranty period.
  • Converting historical time spans (e.g., “the Roman Empire lasted about 1,500 yearsâ€ – how many days is that?).
  • Planning long-term projects or savings goals where daily accrual matters.
  • Converting annual figures to daily rates (e.g., an annual salary to a daily rate).

For everyday use, most people simply multiply by 365. But if you need an exact number for a specific date range, you must account for leap years.

How to Read the Result

The total days is the raw count of days in the period. The weeks figure helps you visualize the length in weeks (e.g., 5 years is about 261 weeks). The average days per year is useful when you need a single multiplier for rough calculations; it will be around 365.25 for longer periods.

For example, if you get 1827 days, that means the period is exactly 261 weeks (since 1827 = 261 × 7). If the number of days is not divisible by 7, the weeks will have a decimal, and the remainder is the extra days.

Common Mistakes and Misconceptions

One common mistake is simply multiplying by 365.25 without checking the actual leap years. For a 5-year period, using 365.25 gives 1826.25 days, which is off by 0.75 days from the correct 1827. For longer periods, the error grows.

Another mistake is forgetting the “divisible by 100 but not by 400 rule. For example, the year 1900 is not a leap year (divisible by 100, not by 400), but 2000 is a leap year (divisible by 400). If you only use the “divisible by 4 rule, you’ll overcount leap days for periods that include century years.

Also, be careful about the starting point. If you start in the middle of a year, you need to count partial years. This calculator assumes you start at the beginning of the start year and count full years.

Limits of the Formula

This formula uses the Gregorian calendar, which is the standard civil calendar in most of the world. It does not account for:

  • Historical calendar changes (e.g., the Julian calendar used before 1582).
  • Time zones and daylight saving time shifts (they don’t affect the number of calendar days).
  • Seconds added as leap seconds (they are irrelevant for day counts).

For very long periods (millions of years), the Gregorian rule is still accurate enough for practical purposes, but the actual length of a solar year changes slightly over time.

Alternatives and Related Conversions

If you need to convert days to years, just reverse the calculation: divide the number of days by 365.25 for an approximate result, or count leap years for an exact one. For months, you can use an average of 30.44 days per month. For hours, multiply days by 24; for minutes, multiply by 1440; for seconds, by 86400.

For date-specific calculations (e.g., days between two dates), it’s better to use a date difference calculator that handles months and leap years automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days are in a year? A common year has 365 days, a leap year has 366 days. The average over a 400-year cycle is 365.2425 days per year.

How do I calculate days in 10 years? Multiply 10 by 365 (giving 3650) and add the number of leap years in the period. For example, from 2024 to 2033, there are 3 leap years (2024, 2028, 2032), so total days = 3650 + 3 = 3653 days.

Is 365.25 days per year accurate? It’s a good approximation (the Julian calendar used it), but the Gregorian average is 365.2425 days. For most purposes, 365.25 is fine, but for exact long-term calculations, use the Gregorian rule.

What is the difference between a tropical year and a calendar year? A tropical year (the time from one equinox to the next) is about 365.2422 days. A calendar year is either 365 or 366 days. The Gregorian calendar is designed to keep the calendar year aligned with the tropical year.

How many days are in 100 years? In the Gregorian calendar, 100 years contain 24 leap years (since century years are not leap unless divisible by 400). So total days = 100 × 365 + 24 = 36524 days. But if the 100-year period includes a year divisible by 400 (like 2000), then it has 25 leap years, giving 36525 days.

Can I use this for Julian calendar dates? No, the Julian calendar has a leap year every 4 years without exception, so it has 365.25 days per year on average. For dates before 1582 or in countries that used the Julian calendar longer, use a different conversion.
