Pounds and Ounces Calculator: Convert & Add
The calculator for this page is switched off while it is checked. The formula is below, and the worked example in the article shows how to use it by hand.
This calculator converts between pounds and ounces, adds or subtracts weights given in pounds and ounces, and shows the total in both units. You enter pounds and ounces for up to two weights, choose an operation, and get the result in pounds, ounces, and total ounces.
Formula
The key relationship is that 1 pound = 16 ounces. To add or subtract weights given in pounds and ounces, first convert each weight entirely to ounces:
Total ounces = (pounds × 16) + ounces
Then perform the addition or subtraction. Finally, convert back to pounds and ounces by dividing the total ounces by 16:
- Pounds = whole part of (total ounces ÷ 16)
- Remaining ounces = total ounces − (pounds × 16)
All variables are in ounces (oz) or pounds (lb). The calculator uses the same steps automatically.
Worked Example
Using the default values: Weight 1 = 2 lb 8 oz, Weight 2 = 1 lb 4 oz, operation = Add.
- Convert Weight 1: 2 × 16 + 8 = 40 oz
- Convert Weight 2: 1 × 16 + 4 = 20 oz
- Add: 40 + 20 = 60 oz
- Convert back: 60 ÷ 16 = 3 whole pounds, remainder 12 oz
Result: 3 lb 12 oz (or 60 oz). The calculator shows the same answer.
Why Use Pounds and Ounces?
The avoirdupois system—used in the United States and, to a lesser extent, the UK—measures weight in pounds (lb) and ounces (oz). Unlike the metric system, where everything is decimal, pounds and ounces use a 16-based conversion. This makes mental math tricky: adding 2 lb 8 oz to 1 lb 4 oz is not as simple as adding 2.8 to 1.4, because 8 oz is half a pound, not 0.8 pounds.
This calculator helps in everyday situations like cooking (a recipe calls for 1 lb 6 oz of flour, you have a 2 lb bag), shipping (two packages weigh 3 lb 10 oz and 2 lb 14 oz, what’s the total?), or weighing babies and pets (tracking weight gain).
How to Read the Result
The result shows three things:
- Total ounces – the entire weight expressed in ounces only. Useful for comparing with a scale that reads in ounces.
- Result pounds – the whole number of pounds in the answer.
- Result ounces – the remaining ounces after the full pounds are removed (always between 0 and 15).
For example, 3 lb 12 oz is the same as 60 oz. If a recipe asks for 60 oz of flour, you can measure 3 lb 12 oz on a scale.
Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
The most frequent error is mixing up pounds and ounces when entering values. Always double-check that you put the pounds in the pounds field and the ounces in the ounces field. Another common mistake is forgetting that 16 oz = 1 lb, not 10 or 12. For instance, 2 lb 20 oz is not a valid final answer—it should be converted to 3 lb 4 oz.
When subtracting, the calculator handles negative results correctly (e.g., 1 lb 2 oz minus 2 lb 6 oz gives −1 lb 4 oz, which is −20 oz). If you see a negative pounds value, it means the first weight was smaller than the second.
Limitations and When to Use Another Tool
This calculator works only with pounds and ounces. If you need to convert between pounds and kilograms, or ounces and grams, use a dedicated unit converter. Also, the calculator assumes standard avoirdupois ounces, not troy ounces (used for precious metals) or fluid ounces (volume). For cooking, remember that fluid ounces measure volume, not weight—a fluid ounce of water weighs about 1 ounce, but a fluid ounce of honey weighs more.
For very large weights (like tons), you might want a calculator that handles tons as well. This one is designed for everyday weights up to a few hundred pounds.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many ounces are in a pound?
Exactly 16 ounces in one avoirdupois pound. This is the standard used in the US and UK for everyday weights.
Can I use this calculator for baby weight?
Yes, it’s perfect for baby weights. If your baby weighed 7 lb 8 oz last week and 8 lb 2 oz this week, you can subtract to find the gain: 8 lb 2 oz − 7 lb 8 oz = 10 oz. The calculator handles the conversion automatically.
What if I have more than two weights to add?
You can add two at a time. Add the first two, note the result, then use that result as the first weight and the next weight as the second. Or, convert each weight to ounces manually and add them all, then convert back.
Does this work for fluid ounces?
No. Fluid ounces measure volume, not weight. This calculator is for weight only. To convert fluid ounces to cups or milliliters, use a volume converter.
Why does the result show 0 lb 16 oz instead of 1 lb 0 oz?
It shouldn’t. The calculator automatically converts 16 oz to 1 lb. If you see 0 lb 16 oz, it means you entered 16 in the ounces field, which is valid, but the result should show 1 lb 0 oz. If it doesn’t, refresh the page.
How do I convert pounds and ounces to kilograms?
First convert to total ounces, then multiply by 0.0283495 (since 1 ounce = 28.3495 grams). For example, 3 lb 12 oz = 60 oz × 0.0283495 = 1.70097 kg. Many online converters do this in one step, but the math is straightforward.
