Speed Conversion Calculator: mph, km/h, Knots & More

A speed conversion calculator instantly converts a speed value between common units such as miles per hour (mph), kilometers per hour (km/h), meters per second (m/s), knots, and feet per second (ft/s). You enter a single number and select the starting unit, and the calculator returns the equivalent speed in every other unit. The tool below does exactly that, using the standard conversion factors between these units.

Formula

The calculator uses the base unit of meters per second (m/s). Every speed unit is defined relative to m/s:

  • 1 mph = 0.44704 m/s (exactly, by definition)
  • 1 km/h = 1/3.6 m/s ≈ 0.277778 m/s
  • 1 knot = 0.514444 m/s (nautical mile per hour)
  • 1 ft/s = 0.3048 m/s

To convert from any unit to any other, you multiply by the ratio of their m/s equivalents. For example, to convert mph to km/h: multiply by 1.609344 (since 0.44704 / 0.277778 = 1.609344).

Worked Example

Using the default value of 60 mph:

  1. Convert to m/s: 60 × 0.44704 = 26.8224 m/s
  2. To km/h: 26.8224 × 3.6 = 96.56 km/h
  3. To knots: 26.8224 / 0.514444 = 52.14 kn
  4. To ft/s: 26.8224 / 0.3048 = 88.00 ft/s

These match the calculator’s outputs (rounded to 2 decimals).

Why Speed Conversion Matters

Speed units vary by country and context. In the US and UK, road speeds are given in mph; in most of the world, km/h. Aviation and maritime use knots. Science and engineering use m/s. If you’re reading a foreign car review, planning a run, or checking weather wind speeds, you’ll need to convert. Getting the wrong unit can mean misjudging travel time or safety distances.

Common Mistakes and Misconceptions

  • Confusing knots with mph: A knot is about 1.15 mph. A 30-knot wind is roughly 34.5 mph, not 30 mph.
  • Forgetting the 1.609 factor: Many people approximate 1 mph ≈ 1.6 km/h, but using 1.5 leads to large errors at high speeds.
  • Mixing m/s and km/h: To convert m/s to km/h, multiply by 3.6 (not 3.0). 10 m/s = 36 km/h, not 30.
  • Rounding too early: If you round intermediate values, the final result may be off. Keep full precision until the end.

How to Choose the Right Unit

Pick the unit that matches your context:

  • Road driving: mph (US/UK) or km/h (everywhere else)
  • Aviation and marine: knots (nautical miles per hour)
  • Science, physics, engineering: m/s (SI unit)
  • Sports (running, cycling): km/h or min/km pace, but mph is common in the US
  • Weather wind speed: often knots in marine forecasts, mph in US public forecasts, km/h in metric countries

Limits of the Conversion

These conversions are exact for the defined relationships between units. However, they assume you are converting a scalar speed, not a vector (direction doesn’t matter). For very high speeds (near the speed of light), relativistic effects would apply, but that’s irrelevant for everyday speeds. Also, some units like “mph” are used in different contexts (e.g., miles per hour vs. nautical miles per hour), so always confirm which mile is meant.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert mph to km/h quickly in my head?

Multiply mph by 1.6 for a rough estimate. For example, 60 mph × 1.6 = 96 km/h (actual: 96.56). For more precision, use 1.609.

What is the difference between a knot and a mile per hour?

A knot is one nautical mile per hour. A nautical mile is 1,852 meters, while a statute mile is 1,609.344 meters. So 1 knot ≈ 1.15078 mph.

How do I convert km/h to m/s?

Divide by 3.6. For example, 90 km/h ÷ 3.6 = 25 m/s. This is because 1 km = 1000 m and 1 hour = 3600 seconds.

Why do cars in the US use mph while most of the world uses km/h?

The US has not adopted the metric system for road signs. The UK also uses mph for road speeds, while most other countries use km/h. This is a historical legacy.

Is there a difference between “speed” and “velocity”?

Yes. Speed is a scalar (magnitude only), while velocity is a vector (speed with direction). This converter deals with speed only.

Can I convert pace (min/km) to speed (km/h)?

Yes. If pace is minutes per km, speed = 60 / pace. For example, 5 min/km = 60/5 = 12 km/h. This calculator doesn’t do that directly, but you can use the formula.
