Zelda Ocarina of Time Fire Temple Key and Door Locations

The Fire Temple in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time contains 9 keys total (8 Small Keys and 1 Boss Key). The dungeon’s doors are opened by these keys, and the Boss Key is required to reach Volvagia. This guide lists every key and door location in the order you would naturally encounter them, including the locked doors that require them.

Background: The Fire Temple’s Layout

The Fire Temple is the third dungeon in the adult portion of the game, located inside Death Mountain Crater. It is a multi-floor labyrinth of stone corridors, lava pits, and rotating staircases. Unlike some earlier dungeons, the Fire Temple does not follow a strictly linear path; you will need to backtrack and use keys in a specific order. The dungeon has a central hub room with a large spinning blade, and many rooms branch off from it. Understanding the layout is key to knowing where each key is used.

Key and Door Locations (In Order)

The following is the standard order for collecting and using all 9 keys. This order assumes you are playing the Nintendo 64 version (the 3DS version has a slightly different key placement, noted below).

Small Key 1 – Near the Entrance

After entering the Fire Temple, go straight ahead and up the stairs. In the room with the two Lizalfos and a chest on a ledge, defeat the enemies and open the chest to get the first Small Key. This key is used on the locked door directly to your left as you enter the main hub (the door leading to the room with the flaming skulls).

Small Key 2 – The Flaming Skull Room

Use the first key on the door in the hub. Inside, you’ll find a room with a giant flaming skull (a Skulltula-like enemy). Defeat it and the other enemies, then open the chest that appears. This gives you the second Small Key. This key opens the locked door at the top of the stairs in the hub, leading to the room with the rotating fire walls.

Small Key 3 – The Rotating Fire Wall Room

In the room with rotating fire walls, you’ll need to use the Hookshot to cross gaps and reach a chest on a high ledge. The chest contains the third Small Key. This key is used on the door in the same room that leads to a narrow corridor with a rolling boulder.

Small Key 4 – The Boulder Corridor

After passing the boulder corridor, you’ll enter a room with a large lava pit and a platform in the center. Use the Longshot (or Hookshot) to reach the platform and open the chest. This gives the fourth Small Key. This key opens the locked door in the hub that is directly opposite the entrance (the door that requires the Fire Tunic to cross the lava).

Small Key 5 – The Fire Wall Maze

Through that door, you’ll find a maze of fire walls that move in patterns. Navigate to the end to find a chest with the fifth Small Key. This key is used on the door in the same maze that leads to the room with the two Flare Dancers (fire enemies).

Small Key 6 – The Flare Dancer Room

Defeat the two Flare Dancers to make a chest appear in the center of the room. Open it to get the sixth Small Key. This key opens the locked door in the hub that is on the upper level, leading to the room with the giant spinning blade (the central pillar room).

Small Key 7 – The Spinning Pillar Room

In the room with the giant spinning blade and multiple floors, use the Hookshot to reach the upper levels. On the highest floor, you’ll find a chest with the seventh Small Key. This key opens the door in the same room that leads to the room with the three Torch Slugs (fire enemies).

Small Key 8 – The Torch Slug Room

Defeat the three Torch Slugs to make a chest appear. Open it to get the eighth Small Key. This key opens the door in the hub that is on the lowest level, leading to the room with the Boss Door (which requires the Boss Key).

Boss Key – The Boss Key Room

After using the eighth Small Key, you’ll enter a room with a large lava pit and a platform in the center. Use the Longshot to reach the platform, then open the chest to get the Boss Key. This key unlocks the Boss Door, which is located in the same room, leading to Volvagia’s lair.

3DS Version Differences

In the 3DS remake, the key placement is slightly different. The most notable change is that the Boss Key is not in the same room as the eighth Small Key. Instead, you must use the eighth Small Key to open a door that leads to a room with a chest containing the Boss Key. The overall order of the keys is mostly the same, but the exact room layouts have minor changes. If you are playing the 3DS version, follow the in-game map and the order of locked doors, as the key locations are still in the same general areas.

Common Mistakes and Tips

  • Missing a key: The most common mistake is missing a key because you didn’t defeat all enemies in a room. Always clear the room before looking for chests.
  • Using keys on the wrong door: In the hub, there are multiple locked doors. Make sure you use the key on the correct door. If you use a key on the wrong door, you may get stuck and have to backtrack.
  • Not using the Hookshot/Longshot: Many chests are on high ledges or across lava. Make sure you have the Hookshot (and later the Longshot) before attempting the Fire Temple.
  • Fire Tunic: You need the Fire Tunic to survive the lava areas. If you don’t have it, you’ll take damage constantly and may not be able to reach some keys.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many keys are in the Fire Temple?

There are 9 keys total: 8 Small Keys and 1 Boss Key. You need all of them to fully complete the dungeon and reach Volvagia.

Where is the Boss Key in the Fire Temple?

In the N64 version, the Boss Key is in a chest on a platform in the room after the Torch Slug room. In the 3DS version, it is in a chest in a side room that you reach after using the eighth Small Key.

What do I do if I’m stuck in the Fire Temple?

Check your map for any rooms you haven’t visited. Make sure you’ve defeated all enemies in each room, as chests often appear after clearing a room. Also, check that you have the Hookshot or Longshot, as many areas require it.

Can I skip any keys in the Fire Temple?

No, you cannot skip any keys. Every locked door requires a specific key, and you must collect all 9 keys to progress. There is no way to bypass the locked doors.

Why is the Fire Temple so hard?

The Fire Temple is considered one of the harder dungeons because of its non-linear layout, many locked doors, and the need to backtrack. The enemies are also tougher, and the lava hazards can cause damage. Taking your time and using the map is key.

What is the reward for completing the Fire Temple?

After defeating Volvagia, you get the Fire Medallion, which is one of the six medallions needed to access Ganon’s Castle. You also get a Heart Container for defeating the boss.

Understanding the Door and Key System

In Ocarina of Time, each dungeon has a specific number of Small Keys and a Boss Key. The Small Keys are used to open locked doors within the dungeon, and the Boss Key opens the door to the boss room. In the Fire Temple, the keys are not always used in the order you find them. You may find a key that opens a door you’ve already passed, so you need to remember where you’ve seen locked doors. The dungeon map (which you can get from a chest) shows the layout, but it does not show which door requires which key. The key system is designed to encourage exploration and backtracking.
