Pendulum Summoning Scales Steps & Extra Deck Rules
Pendulum Summoning lets you Special Summon multiple monsters at once by placing two Pendulum Monsters in your Pendulum Zones, but the Extra Deck has strict placement rules. You set a Pendulum Scale in each of the two Pendulum Zones, then once per turn you can Special Summon any number of face-up monsters from your hand or Extra Deck whose Levels fall strictly between the two Scale numbers.
What Are Pendulum Monsters?
Pendulum Monsters are a card type introduced in the Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V era. They are half monster, half Spell: in your hand or Extra Deck they can be activated as Spells in your Pendulum Zones (the leftmost and rightmost Spell & Trap Zones). While treated as Spells, they have a Pendulum Scale number printed on them, shown as a blue number on the left and a red number on the right. When destroyed, face-up Pendulum Monsters go face-up to the Extra Deck instead of the Graveyard, which is the key to their recycling ability.
The Pendulum Zones and Scales
Before 2020, there were two dedicated Pendulum Zones on the field. After the rule change, those zones were removed; now the two far-left and far-right Spell & Trap Zones act as Pendulum Zones. This means if you use those zones for normal Spells/Traps, you cannot use them for Pendulum Scales that turn. Each Pendulum Monster has two Scale numbers (usually identical, but some have different left/right values). The Scale number is the Level the monster is treated as while in the Pendulum Zone.
Pendulum Summoning Steps
To perform a Pendulum Summon, follow these steps in order:
- Step 1 – Have two face-up Pendulum Monsters in your two Pendulum Zones. They can be placed there from your hand (as Spell activations) or from the Extra Deck (only if they were face-up there).
- Step 2 – Check the Scale numbers. The two numbers create a range; the lower number is the minimum, the higher is the maximum. You can Summon monsters with Levels strictly between those numbers. For example, Scales 2 and 7 allow Levels 3, 4, 5, and 6 (not 2 or 7).
- Step 3 – Declare you are performing a Pendulum Summon. This is an inherent Special Summon, so it does not start a Chain.
- Step 4 – Choose any number of face-up monsters from your hand and/or face-up Pendulum Monsters from your Extra Deck whose Levels are within the scale range. You may Summon 1 or many, as long as they all meet the Level requirement.
- Step 5 – Special Summon all chosen monsters at the same time, in Attack or Defense Position. They are treated as Special Summoned, not Normal Summoned, so effects that trigger on Special Summon work.
Extra Deck Rules for Pendulum Summoning
The Extra Deck is a major source of Pendulum monsters. When a face-up Pendulum Monster would be sent from the field to the Graveyard, it is placed on top of the Extra Deck face-up instead. This applies to cards destroyed by battle or card effect, and also to monsters used as Xyz Material (they go to the Graveyard, not the Extra Deck, because they are not treated as being on the field). To Pendulum Summon from the Extra Deck, the monster must be face-up there. Face-down Pendulum Monsters in the Extra Deck (e.g., from being flipped face-down) cannot be Pendulum Summoned. Also, you can only Pendulum Summon face-up Pendulum Monsters from the Extra Deck – not any other Extra Deck monster like a Fusion or Synchro, unless that card is also a Pendulum Monster and is face-up.
Common Mistakes and Misconceptions
- Scales are not Levels: A Scale 5 does not mean the monster is Level 5. The Scale is only used for Pendulum Summoning, not for battle or other effects.
- You cannot Pendulum Summon the same turn you set a Scale? Actually, you can. Placing a Pendulum Monster in a Pendulum Zone is a Spell activation, not a Normal Summon, so you can still Pendulum Summon that same turn.
- Pendulum Summon is once per turn: You can only perform one Pendulum Summon per turn, but it can Summon multiple monsters at once. If your Scales are destroyed, you cannot Pendulum Summon again that turn.
- Negating the Summon: A Pendulum Summon is an inherent Summon, so it can be negated by cards like Black Horn of Heaven or Solemn Warning, but not by cards that negate Spell/Trap activations.
- Pendulum Monsters in the Graveyard: If a face-down Pendulum Monster is destroyed, it goes to the Graveyard, not the Extra Deck, because it is not face-up on the field.
How to Choose Your Scales
Your Scale numbers determine which Levels you can Summon. In a typical Pendulum deck, you want two Scales that cover a wide range of Levels, ideally including your key monsters. For example, if your boss monster is Level 7, you need one Scale below 7 and one above 7 (e.g., Scale 4 and Scale 8). Some decks focus on low Scales (1-4) to Summon low-Level monsters, while others aim for high Scales (5-8) for high-Level monsters. Some cards have Scale effects that alter your Scales or let you use them from the hand. Always consider the Levels of the monsters you want to Summon, and remember that you cannot Summon monsters with Levels equal to either Scale.
Pendulum Summoning Compared to Other Summoning Methods
Pendulum Summoning is unique in that it is a mass Special Summon, unlike Fusion, Synchro, or Xyz which typically use specific materials. It does not require a specific combination of monsters; any monsters with the right Levels work. However, it has restrictions: you need two Scales set, the monsters must be in hand or face-up Extra Deck, and you can only do it once per turn. Compared to Link Summoning, Pendulum Summoning does not require a Link monster, but Link monsters can be Pendulum Summoned if they are Pendulum Monsters (most are not). The main advantage is speed and card advantage, but the weakness is that if your Scales are destroyed, your strategy can stall.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I Pendulum Summon from the Extra Deck if the monster was sent there face-down?
No. Only face-up Pendulum Monsters in the Extra Deck can be Pendulum Summoned. Face-down cards in the Extra Deck (e.g., from being flipped face-down by an effect) cannot be Pendulum Summoned, and they cannot be used for other Extra Deck Summons either unless flipped face-up.
Do Pendulum Monsters go to the Extra Deck if they are used as Xyz Material?
No. When a Pendulum Monster is detached as Xyz Material, it is sent to the Graveyard as a cost, not as a card that would be destroyed. Since it is not being sent from the field to the Graveyard as a card, it does not trigger the rule that sends it to the Extra Deck. It goes to the Graveyard normally.
Can I Pendulum Summon a monster with a Level equal to one of my Scales?
No. The Levels must be strictly between the two Scale numbers. If your Scales are 3 and 5, you can Summon Level 4 only. If you have Scales 3 and 3, you cannot Pendulum Summon at all because there is no integer between 3 and 3.
Can I use the same Pendulum Monster as both my Scales?
No. You need two different Pendulum Monster cards in the two Pendulum Zones. You cannot have the same copy of a card in two zones simultaneously, and even if you have two copies, they would have the same Scale, which usually creates no range (unless they have different left/right scales and you use one with a different scale, but you still need two separate cards).
What happens if my Pendulum Scale is destroyed while I have monsters in my hand?
You lose the ability to Pendulum Summon that turn unless you can activate another Pendulum Monster in that zone. The monsters in your hand remain there, and you can still Normal Summon or Special Summon by other means.
Can I Pendulum Summon during my opponent’s turn?
No. Pendulum Summoning can only be performed during your own Main Phase, and only once per turn. It is not a Quick Effect and cannot be activated on the opponent’s turn.
