Word Remove Space Between Lines: Quick Fix

To remove space between lines in Microsoft Word, select the text, go to the Home tab, click the Line and Paragraph Spacing icon (the one with up/down arrows next to lines), and choose 1.0. If extra space still appears between paragraphs, open the same menu and select Remove Space After Paragraph.

Formula

This calculator works out your average pace and speed for a run, walk, or ride. Enter the total finish time in minutes and the distance in kilometers. The calculator returns:

  • Average pace = finish time ÷ distance, in minutes per kilometer.
  • Average speed = distance ÷ (finish time ÷ 60), in kilometers per hour.

Variables:

  • t = finish time (minutes)
  • d = distance (km)
  • pace = min/km
  • speed = km/h

Worked Example

Using the default values: finish time = 50 minutes, distance = 10 km.

  1. Pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.0 min/km
  2. Speed = 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.0 km/h

So the average pace is 5 minutes per kilometer, and the average speed is 12 kilometers per hour.

When to Use This Calculator

Use this tool when you want to know how fast you are moving over a known distance. It is common for runners training for a 5K, 10K, half marathon, or marathon, as well as cyclists and walkers. Instead of manually dividing time by distance, the calculator gives you both pace and speed instantly.

Pace is the standard metric in most running apps and races outside the US. Speed is more common in driving and cycling contexts. Both are useful depending on your goal—pace helps you set interval targets, speed helps compare with vehicle or cycling averages.

How to Read the Results

The pace output shows minutes per kilometer. A lower number means faster. For example, 4:30 min/km is faster than 6:00 min/km. The speed output shows kilometers per hour. A higher number means faster. A pace of 5 min/km corresponds to 12 km/h, as shown above.

If you run on a treadmill or track, you may see speed in miles per hour (mph). To convert km/h to mph, multiply by 0.621371. For pace in minutes per mile, multiply min/km by 1.60934.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

  • Using seconds instead of minutes: If your time is 50 minutes and 30 seconds, convert to 50.5 minutes before entering. Otherwise the pace will be too slow.
  • Mixing units: If your distance is in miles, convert to km first (1 mile = 1.60934 km) or the pace will be wrong.
  • Rounding too early: Keep at least two decimal places during intermediate calculations. Round only the final result.
  • Forgetting that pace is per unit distance: A common error is to think a 50-minute 10K means 5 minutes per mile—it is per kilometer.

Limitations of the Formula

This calculator assumes a constant speed over the whole distance. In real life, you may start slower, speed up, or walk up hills. The result is an average, not a prediction of your split times. It also ignores rest breaks, elevation changes, and wind resistance. For training purposes, use it to set realistic goals, not to plan exact minute-by-minute pacing on a hilly course.

The formula works for any unit of distance as long as you are consistent. If you prefer miles, you can enter distance in miles and time in minutes, and the pace output will be minutes per mile—but the speed output will be in miles per hour. The calculator is unit-agnostic; it just divides the two numbers you provide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert my pace from min/km to min/mile?

Multiply the pace in minutes per kilometer by 1.60934. For example, 5 min/km × 1.60934 = 8.05 min/mile, which is about 8 minutes and 3 seconds per mile.

What is a good running pace for a beginner?

It varies widely by age, fitness, and experience. A common beginner 5K pace is around 8–10 min/km (12–16 min/mile). More important than a specific number is to run at a conversational effort—you can talk in short sentences.

Can I use this for cycling or walking?

Yes. The formula is the same for any activity that covers distance over time. For cycling, you might be more interested in speed (km/h) than pace. For walking, pace is often used to estimate calorie burn or plan routes.

Why does my running app show a different average pace?

Apps often use moving time (excluding pauses) or GPS distance, which can differ from your entered time and distance. This calculator gives a simple average based on the numbers you provide, which is accurate for a flat, non-stop effort.

How do I calculate pace for a marathon (42.195 km) if I finish in 4 hours?

Convert 4 hours to 240 minutes. Pace = 240 ÷ 42.195 = 5.69 min/km, which is about 5 minutes 41 seconds per kilometer. Speed = 42.195 ÷ (240 ÷ 60) = 10.55 km/h.
