White Line on iPhone Screen: Checks & Repair Route

A single white line running vertically or horizontally across your iPhone screen usually means a hardware fault in the display or its flex cable, not a software glitch. The repair route is: back up your data, test in safe mode (if possible) and with brightness changes, then take it to Apple or an authorized service provider for diagnosis — DIY fixes are rarely effective and can void coverage.

Formula

The calculator works out average pace and speed from a finish time and distance. Pace is the time taken per unit distance, and speed is the distance covered per hour.

Pace (min/km) = Finish time (min) ÷ Distance (km)

Speed (km/h) = Distance (km) ÷ (Finish time (min) ÷ 60)

Variables:

  • Finish time (t) – total time taken, in minutes.
  • Distance (d) – total distance covered, in kilometers.
  • Pace – minutes per kilometer (min/km).
  • Speed – kilometers per hour (km/h).

Worked Example

Using the default values: finish time = 50 minutes, distance = 10 km.

  1. Pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.00 min/km
  2. Speed = 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.00 km/h

The calculator shows an average pace of 5.00 min/km and an average speed of 12.00 km/h.

What the White Line Means

A white line on an iPhone screen is almost always a display hardware issue. It can appear as a thin vertical or horizontal stripe, sometimes flickering or changing thickness. The most common causes are:

  • Physical damage – a drop or impact that cracked the display internally without visible external damage.
  • Pressure damage – sitting on the phone or squeezing it in a tight pocket can damage the OLED panel.
  • Water or moisture ingress – liquid can corrode the display connectors.
  • Manufacturing defect – rare, but possible in early batches of a model.

Software glitches rarely cause persistent white lines. A temporary line that disappears after a restart might be a GPU driver issue, but a line that stays put is hardware.

Diagnostic Checks to Do First

Before booking a repair, run these checks to confirm it’s not a software problem:

  1. Restart the iPhone – hold the side button and either volume button, then slide to power off. Turn it back on and check if the line persists.
  2. Take a screenshot – if the line appears in the screenshot (open the screenshot in Photos and zoom in), it’s a software or rendering issue. If it does not appear, it’s the physical screen.
  3. Adjust brightness – change brightness from minimum to maximum. If the line changes intensity or disappears at certain levels, it’s likely a display backlight or panel issue.
  4. Check in safe mode – iPhones don’t have a true safe mode, but you can temporarily disable third-party tweaks by restarting. If you have a jailbroken device, reboot normally – tweaks won’t load after a standard restart.
  5. Check for pressure points – gently press around the line. If it changes or flickers, the display cable is likely loose or damaged.

If the line persists after all these, it’s hardware.

Repair Options and Costs

Your repair route depends on warranty status, AppleCare+, and the iPhone model.

  • Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider – the safest route. They use genuine parts and keep your water resistance seal. If your iPhone is under warranty (1 year) or you have AppleCare+, the repair may be free or at a reduced cost. Out-of-warranty display replacement costs roughly $200–$350 depending on model.
  • Third-party repair shops – can be cheaper ($100–$250), but quality varies. Some use refurbished or non-genuine screens that may not have True Tone or may fail sooner. Always check reviews and ask about warranty.
  • DIY repair – not recommended for most users. iPhone screens are glued and require special tools. You risk breaking the display, damaging the Face ID sensor, or losing water resistance. If you have no experience, this often costs more in the long run.

Before any repair, back up your iPhone to iCloud or a computer. Also, note that if you have a third-party screen already, Apple may refuse service or charge extra.

Common Misconceptions

Many people believe a white line can be fixed with a software update or by resetting settings. That’s rarely true. Also, some think putting the phone in rice or using a magnet can fix it – neither works for a display line. The line is physical damage, not a loose connection you can fix by tapping.

Another misconception: “It’s just a line, I can live with it. While the line may not spread, it can worsen over time. Also, if the underlying issue is a failing display, the touch screen may become unresponsive or the whole screen may go black.

When to Replace the Phone Instead

If your iPhone is older (5+ years) and the repair cost is over half the phone’s value, consider replacing it. For example, an iPhone 8 with a cracked screen might cost $150 to repair, but a newer budget phone costs $400. Also, if the phone has other issues (battery, camera, performance), a new phone may be more economical.

Check the trade-in value on Apple’s website or with carriers. Even with a screen issue, you may get some trade-in credit. But be honest about the condition – a phone with a white line is “damaged and worth less.

Preventing Future White Lines

  • Use a sturdy case that covers the corners and edges.
  • Avoid sitting on your phone or keeping it in tight back pockets.
  • Keep it away from water and high humidity.
  • Don’t expose it to extreme temperatures – heat can damage the OLED panel.
  • If you drop it, inspect the screen immediately for lines or dead pixels.

No case is 100% drop-proof, but a good case plus a screen protector reduces the risk of internal display damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a white line spread?

Sometimes. If the line is caused by a crack in the OLED panel, it can grow over time as the crack expands. If it’s a loose cable, it may stay static. There’s no way to predict, but it’s safer to repair sooner than later.

Can I fix a white line with a software reset?

No. A factory reset or iOS update cannot repair physical damage. If the line appears in a screenshot, it’s a software issue, but that’s extremely rare. Persistent lines are hardware.

Does AppleCare+ cover a white line?

Yes, if the line is due to accidental damage (like a drop), AppleCare+ covers it for a service fee of $29 for the screen. If it’s a manufacturing defect, it’s covered under the standard warranty for free.

How long does a screen repair take?

At an Apple Store, it can take 1–3 hours if they have the part in stock. Authorized providers may take a few days if they need to order the display. Third-party shops often do it in 30–60 minutes.

Will a third-party screen affect Face ID?

Yes, some third-party screens can break Face ID if the technician damages the front camera or dot projector. Apple’s own repair preserves Face ID. Always ask the shop about their track record with Face ID.
