This page explains the word “seen — its standard meanings, its informal uses, and how to use it correctly in sentences. You’ll learn the difference between “seen and “saw, why “I seen is nonstandard, and how the term appears in modern slang like “seen it or “seen on.
Formula
The calculator works out your average pace and speed from a finish time and distance. The formula is:
Pace (min/km) = Finish time (min) ÷ Distance (km)
Speed (km/h) = Distance (km) ÷ (Finish time (min) ÷ 60)
Variables:
• t = finish time in minutes
• d = distance in kilometers
• Pace is the number of minutes it takes to cover one kilometer.
• Speed is the average number of kilometers covered in one hour.
Worked Example
Using the default values: finish time = 50 minutes, distance = 10 km.
Step 1: Calculate pace.
Pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.00 min/km
Step 2: Calculate speed.
Speed = 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.00 km/h
So with a 50-minute 10K, your average pace is 5:00 per kilometer and your average speed is 12.0 km/h.
When to Use This Calculator
Use this calculator when you have completed a run, ride, or walk and you know the total time and distance. It’s handy for:
- Checking if you hit a target pace (e.g., a 5:00 min/km goal).
- Comparing your speed across different routes or workouts.
- Planning a race: enter a goal time and distance to see what pace you need to hold.
You can also work backwards: if you want to run 10 km at a 5:30 pace, you’d need a finish time of 55 minutes.
How to Read the Results
The first output, pace, is shown in minutes per kilometer (min/km). A lower pace number means faster running. For example, 4:30 min/km is faster than 5:00 min/km.
The second output, speed, is in kilometers per hour (km/h). A higher speed means faster movement. Both numbers describe the same effort — pace is time per distance, speed is distance per time.
If you use miles, convert your distance to kilometers (1 mile = 1.60934 km) or simply enter the distance in miles and interpret the pace as minutes per mile. The math works the same.
Common Mistakes
- Mixing units: If you enter a time in hours instead of minutes, the pace and speed will be wrong. Convert hours to minutes first (e.g., 1:30 = 90 minutes).
- Rounding too early: Keep at least two decimal places during the calculation, then round the final answer to the number of decimals shown.
- Confusing pace and speed: A faster pace is a smaller number; a faster speed is a larger number. They move in opposite directions.
Limitations of the Formula
This calculator assumes a perfectly steady pace. Real runs include hills, stops, and changes in effort, so your instantaneous pace varies. The result is an average over the whole distance. It also ignores factors like wind resistance, terrain, and fatigue, which affect actual performance but are not part of the basic formula.
For most training and race planning, the average pace is sufficient. If you need detailed split data, a GPS watch or running app provides per-kilometer splits.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between pace and speed?
Pace is the time it takes to cover one unit of distance (e.g., minutes per kilometer). Speed is the distance covered in one unit of time (e.g., kilometers per hour). They are reciprocals: a 5:00 min/km pace equals 12 km/h.
Can I use this for walking?
Yes, the formula works for any activity where you know time and distance. Walking pace is usually between 10 and 15 min/km, while running is often 4–7 min/km.
How do I convert my pace to minutes per mile?
If you enter distance in miles, the pace output will be minutes per mile. If you have minutes per kilometer, multiply by 1.60934 to get minutes per mile. For example, 5:00 min/km = 8:03 per mile.
What if I only know my speed in mph?
Convert mph to km/h by multiplying by 1.60934, then use the calculator. Or simply enter your distance in miles and time in minutes — the speed output will be in mph (since distance is in miles and time is in hours).
Why does the calculator show 12.00 km/h for a 50-minute 10K?
Because 10 km divided by (50/60) hours equals 10 / 0.8333 = 12. That’s the average speed. The pace is 50/10 = 5 minutes per kilometer.
