WhatsApp check marks, read receipts, and online status tell you whether a message was sent, delivered, or opened, and whether the recipient is currently using the app. A single grey check means sent, a double grey check means delivered, and a double blue check means read — but the system has important privacy settings and edge cases that change what these indicators actually show.
Formula
The calculator works out your average pace and speed from a finish time and distance. Pace is the time it takes to cover one kilometre (or mile), and speed is the distance covered per hour.
Pace = Finish time (minutes) ÷ Distance (km)
Speed = Distance (km) ÷ (Finish time (minutes) ÷ 60)
Variables:
t = finish time in minutes
d = distance in kilometres
Worked Example
Using the default values of 50 minutes for a 10 km run:
Pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.00 min/km
Speed = 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.00 km/h
So a 50‑minute 10 km run gives an average pace of 5:00 per kilometre and an average speed of 12 km/h.
How WhatsApp Check Marks Work
WhatsApp uses a simple tick system that appears next to each message you send. The status updates in real time as the message moves through the delivery pipeline:
- One grey check – the message was sent from your phone to WhatsApp’s servers, but not yet delivered to the recipient’s device. This can happen when the recipient’s phone is off, has no internet connection, or is out of range.
- Two grey checks – the message was delivered to the recipient’s device. It does not mean they have seen it; it only means their phone received it and WhatsApp confirmed that.
- Two blue checks – the recipient has opened the chat and viewed the message. This is the “read receipt.
For group chats, the rules are slightly different. You will see a single check when the message is sent, and then a double check once it has been delivered to all members. When every member has read it, the double check turns blue. If some members have read it and others haven’t, you won’t see a partial indicator — it stays grey until everyone has read it.
Online Status and Last Seen
The “online indicator appears next to a contact’s name when they are actively using WhatsApp on their phone or WhatsApp Web/Desktop. It does not mean they are staring at your chat — they could be in another conversation, reading a status update, or just have the app open in the background.
“Last seen shows the last time the person was active on WhatsApp. The format can be a time (e.g., “5:12 PM), a day (“Yesterday), or a date (“Tuesday). If you don’t see a last seen time at all, the person has either blocked you, changed their privacy settings to hide it, or hasn’t used WhatsApp in a very long time.
Privacy Settings: What You Can Turn Off
WhatsApp gives you control over who can see your read receipts, online status, and last seen. These settings are independent of each other, so you can mix and match.
- Read receipts – You can turn off read receipts entirely. When you do, you won’t see blue ticks on messages you send, and others won’t see blue ticks on messages they send to you. However, read receipts cannot be disabled for group chats — if you turn them off, you still see blue ticks in groups, but others won’t see yours.
- Last seen and online – You can set these to “Everyone, “My Contacts, or “Nobody. Note that if you hide your last seen, you won’t be able to see other people’s last seen times either — WhatsApp enforces this reciprocity.
- Online status – There is no direct toggle for online status. If you hide your last seen, your online status is also hidden from people who don’t share theirs with you. But if you set last seen to “Everyone, your online status is visible to everyone.
These settings are found in Settings → Account → Privacy.
Common Misconceptions and Edge Cases
Many people misinterpret check marks, especially when they don’t see blue ticks. Here are the most common situations:
- Blue ticks but no reply – The person has read your message but hasn’t responded. They might be busy, thinking about a reply, or intentionally ignoring you. Blue ticks alone don’t tell you why.
- Grey ticks for a long time – If your message stays on one grey check for hours, the recipient’s phone is likely off or has no internet. If it stays on two grey checks, the message was delivered but the recipient hasn’t opened the chat. They may have read it from the notification bar without opening the app — that does not trigger a blue tick.
- Blue ticks in groups – In a group, blue ticks mean every member has read the message. If one member has read receipts disabled, you will never see blue ticks in that group, even if everyone has actually read it.
- Blocked contacts – If someone blocks you, your messages will still show one grey check (sent) but never two grey checks. You also won’t see their online status or last seen, and your calls will not go through. This is a common sign of being blocked, but it is not definitive — the person could also have no internet connection.
How to Tell if Someone Read Your Message Without Blue Ticks
If read receipts are turned off, you can’t see blue ticks. But there are a few indirect signals:
- They reply – Obviously, if they respond, they read it.
- They mention something from your message – If they bring up a detail you wrote, they clearly saw it.
- They call you – A phone call after your message often means they read it first.
- They change their profile picture or status – If they are active on WhatsApp, they might have seen your message but not opened the chat.
There is no reliable way to force blue ticks on someone who has disabled read receipts. Workarounds like airplane mode tricks or third-party apps are not officially supported and can compromise your account.
WhatsApp Web and Multi-Device
WhatsApp Web and the desktop app show the same check marks as your phone. If you read a message on WhatsApp Web, it will mark it as read on your phone too, and the sender will see blue ticks. The same applies if you read on your phone while logged in on the web — both devices sync in real time.
One important detail: if you receive a message and only see it in the notification preview on your phone’s lock screen, it does not count as read. The blue tick only appears when you actually open the chat.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I see two grey ticks but no blue tick?
Two grey ticks mean the message was delivered to the recipient’s device, but they haven’t opened the chat to read it. They may have seen the content in a notification preview, but that does not trigger a read receipt. If the recipient has read receipts disabled, you will never see blue ticks from them.
Can I see read receipts without them knowing?
No. WhatsApp’s privacy system is reciprocal: if you turn off read receipts, you lose the ability to see them from others. There is no official way to see blue ticks while hiding your own. Third-party apps that claim to do this are not safe and can get your account banned.
What does it mean if someone is online but doesn’t read my message?
They are using WhatsApp but haven’t opened your chat. They could be in another conversation, checking statuses, or simply ignoring your message. Online status does not mean they are actively looking at your chat.
Why do my messages show one grey check for hours?
One grey check means the message hasn’t been delivered to the recipient’s phone. This usually happens when their phone is off, has no internet connection, or is out of coverage. It can also happen if they have blocked you, but that is less common.
Do read receipts work in group chats?
Yes, but only if all members have read receipts enabled. If even one member has them disabled, you will never see blue ticks in that group, because WhatsApp can’t confirm that everyone has read the message.
Can I hide my online status but still see others’?
No. WhatsApp enforces reciprocity for last seen and online status. If you hide your last seen from someone, you won’t see theirs either. The only exception is if you set last seen to “My Contacts and a person is not in your contacts — then you see nothing, but they might see yours if you are in their contacts.
