Formula
The calculator works out your average pace and speed from a finish time and distance. The formulas are:
- Pace (min/km) = Finish time (minutes) ÷ Distance (km)
- Speed (km/h) = Distance (km) ÷ (Finish time (minutes) ÷ 60)
Where:
- Finish time (t) – the total time taken, in minutes (e.g., 50 min)
- Distance (d) – the distance covered, in kilometers (e.g., 10 km)
- Pace – the time per kilometer, in minutes per kilometer (min/km)
- Speed – the average speed, in kilometers per hour (km/h)
Worked Example
Using the default values from the calculator (t = 50 min, d = 10 km):
- Pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.00 min/km
- Speed = 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.00 km/h
So with a 50-minute finish over 10 km, your average pace is 5:00 per kilometer and your average speed is 12 km/h.
When to Use This Calculator
Use this tool whenever you have a finish time and distance and want to know your average pace or speed. It’s handy for:
- Planning a training run – if you want to run 10 km in 50 minutes, you know you need to hold 5:00 min/km.
- Post-race analysis – enter your actual time and distance to see what pace you maintained.
- Comparing workouts – see if you’ve gotten faster over the same distance.
How to Read the Result
The first output (pace) is the headline answer. It tells you how many minutes (and seconds, if you look at the decimal) you took per kilometer. For example, 5.00 min/km means exactly 5 minutes per kilometer. The second output (speed) gives the same information in a different unit – kilometers per hour – which is useful if you’re used to car speedometers or cycling.
Common Mistakes
- Mixing units – If you enter distance in miles but label it km, your pace will be wrong. Convert miles to km first (1 mile = 1.60934 km).
- Using seconds in the time field – The calculator expects minutes. If your time is 50 minutes 30 seconds, enter 50.5 (since 30 seconds = 0.5 minutes).
- Rounding too early – Round only at the end. If you round intermediate values, your final pace may be off by a few seconds.
Limitations of the Formula
This formula assumes a constant pace throughout the entire distance. In reality, your pace may vary due to hills, wind, fatigue, or strategy. The average pace is still useful, but it doesn’t show you where you sped up or slowed down. For a detailed breakdown, you’d need a GPS watch or a split-by-split analysis.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use this for miles instead of kilometers?
Yes, but you’ll need to convert. Enter distance in miles and you’ll get pace in minutes per mile and speed in miles per hour. The math is the same; just make sure your units are consistent.
What if my time is in hours and minutes?
Convert everything to minutes first. For example, 1 hour 10 minutes = 70 minutes. Then enter 70 in the time field.
Why is my speed lower than my pace?
They’re just different ways of expressing the same thing. A pace of 5 min/km is equivalent to 12 km/h. If you’re used to one unit, the other may seem unfamiliar, but both are correct.
Does this calculator work for walking?
Yes, it works for any activity where you cover a distance in a certain time – running, walking, cycling, or even driving.
What is a “good pace?
It depends on your fitness level, age, and the distance. For a recreational runner, a 5:00 min/km pace (12 km/h) is quite brisk. For a beginner, 7:00 min/km might be more typical. The calculator just gives you the number; you decide what’s good for you.
