This calculator works out your average pace (min/km) and speed (km/h) from a finish time and distance. Enter your total time in minutes and the distance in kilometres, and you get your pace per kilometre and overall average speed.
Formula
Pace (min/km) = Total time (min) ÷ Distance (km)
Speed (km/h) = Distance (km) ÷ (Total time (min) ÷ 60)
Where:
- t = total time in minutes
- d = distance in kilometres
- Pace = minutes per kilometre (lower is faster)
- Speed = kilometres per hour (higher is faster)
Worked Example
Using the defaults: t = 50 minutes, d = 10 km.
- Pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.00 min/km
- Speed = 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.00 km/h
So a 50-minute 10 km run gives a pace of 5:00 per kilometre and an average speed of 12 km/h.
When to Use This Calculator
In the UK, runners, cyclists, and walkers often use pace (min/km) rather than speed (km/h) because it maps directly to split times. You might use it to:
- Plan a race: if you want to finish a 10 km in under 50 minutes, you need to hold 5:00 min/km.
- Check a training run: enter the time and distance from your watch to see your average pace.
- Compare efforts on different routes: pace normalises for distance.
The same formula works for any distance – 5 km, 10 km, half marathon (21.1 km), or marathon (42.2 km). Just enter the total time in minutes (e.g., 3 hours = 180 minutes).
How to Read the Result
The pace result is shown as a decimal (e.g., 5.25 min/km). To convert to minutes and seconds, multiply the decimal part by 60: 0.25 × 60 = 15 seconds, so 5.25 min/km = 5:15 per km.
Speed is the average for the whole distance. If you run with hills or stop for traffic, your instantaneous speed varies, but this is the overall average.
Common Mistakes
- Mixing units: The formula works with minutes and kilometres. If you have time in hours, convert to minutes first (e.g., 1:30:00 = 90 minutes). If you have distance in miles, convert to kilometres (1 mile = 1.60934 km).
- Using speed instead of pace: Pace and speed are reciprocals. A pace of 5 min/km equals 12 km/h, not 5 km/h.
- Rounding too early: Round only the final answer, not intermediate steps, to avoid small errors.
Limits of the Formula
This is a simple average. It does not account for:
- Elevation gain or terrain – a hilly route will feel harder even at the same pace.
- Wind or weather conditions.
- Stoppages – if you pause your watch, the time you enter should be moving time, not elapsed time, for an accurate pace.
The formula assumes a constant pace. In reality, most runners slow down slightly over distance, so your average pace may not match your even-split pace.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good pace for a 10 km in the UK?
There is no single answer – it depends on age, fitness, and experience. A recreational runner might do 10 km in 60 minutes (6:00 min/km), while a club runner might aim for 45 minutes (4:30 min/km). Use the calculator to see what pace you need for a target time.
How do I convert my pace from min/km to min/mile?
Multiply the min/km pace by 1.60934. For example, 5:00 min/km × 1.60934 = 8:03 per mile. Many UK runners use min/mile for road races, so this conversion is handy.
Is pace or speed more useful for training?
Pace is more common in running because it directly relates to split times. Speed (km/h) is often used for cycling or treadmill settings. Both are valid – just be consistent.
Why does my watch show a different pace?
GPS watches calculate pace based on their own distance measurement, which can vary slightly due to satellite accuracy, turns, and elevation. The formula here uses the distance you enter, so it will match if you use the same distance.
Can I use this for walking?
Yes. A brisk walk is about 5 km/h (12 min/km). Enter your time and distance to see your average walking pace.
What if I only know my time in hours and minutes?
Convert to minutes first: 1 hour 20 minutes = 80 minutes. Then enter that number. The calculator expects minutes, not hours.
