Shiver Leviathan in Subnautica 2: Where to Find the Void Predator

The Shiver Leviathan is a large, aggressive predator that patrols the open ocean beyond the playable map in Subnautica 2. You will find it in the Void biome, which is the deep, dark abyss that surrounds the entire playable area. To encounter it, simply swim or pilot a vehicle past the edge of the map until the water turns a deep blue-black and the seabed drops away.

Formula

This page is a calculator for average pace and speed, not a direct map tool. The formula used is:

Pace (min/km) = Finish time (minutes) ÷ Distance (km)

Speed (km/h) = Distance (km) ÷ (Finish time (minutes) ÷ 60)

Variables:

  • t – finish time in minutes (e.g., 50 min)
  • d – distance in kilometers (e.g., 10 km)
  • pace – average time per kilometer, shown in min/km
  • speed – average speed in kilometers per hour

Worked Example

Using the default values (t = 50 min, d = 10 km):

  1. Pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.00 min/km
  2. Speed = 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.00 km/h

The calculator gives the same results: 5.00 min/km and 12.00 km/h.

What Is the Shiver Leviathan?

The Shiver Leviathan is one of the leviathan-class predators introduced in Subnautica 2 (early access). It is a long, serpentine creature with bioluminescent spots along its body, and it behaves aggressively toward the player. Unlike the Reaper Leviathan from the first game, the Shiver is more of a deep-sea ambush predator, often appearing suddenly from the darkness.

Where Exactly to Find It

The Shiver Leviathan spawns in the Void – the biome that borders the entire map. To find it:

  • Head to any edge of the playable area (the map boundary is marked by a steep drop-off).
  • Swim or drive past the drop-off into the dark blue water.
  • Wait a few seconds – the Shiver will typically appear within 30 seconds of entering the Void.

It is not found in any specific coordinate; it patrols the entire perimeter. The most reliable method is to go to the edge near the starting area (the Safe Shallows equivalent) and cross the boundary.

How to Survive an Encounter

The Shiver Leviathan deals heavy damage and can destroy a Seaglide or a small vehicle quickly. To survive:

  • Use a vehicle with a hull upgrade if possible – the Seamoth (or its Subnautica 2 equivalent) can take a few hits, but the Shiver will still damage it.
  • Keep your distance – the Shiver has a lunge attack that covers a long range.
  • If you are on foot (with a diving suit), use a propulsion cannon or stasis rifle to freeze it temporarily and swim away.
  • Do not stay in the Void for more than a minute – the Shiver respawns quickly and will chase you to the boundary.

Common Misconceptions

One common myth is that the Shiver Leviathan only spawns at night. That is false – it appears at any time of day. Another misconception is that it drops rare resources when killed. In the current early access build, it does not drop any unique loot, and killing it is not required for any story progression. It exists purely as a danger to discourage players from leaving the map.

Why Is It Called the “Void Predator?

Players call it the “Void Predator because it is the main threat in the Void biome. The name is not official – the game files refer to it as the Shiver Leviathan. The behavior is similar to the Ghost Leviathan from the original Subnautica, which also guarded the map edges. The Shiver is faster and more aggressive, making it a true endgame threat.

Comparison with Other Leviathans

Subnautica 2 currently features several leviathans, but the Shiver is the only one that lives exclusively in the Void. The other large creatures, like the Glow Whale (passive) and the Stalker Leviathan (found in kelp forests), are more localized. The Shiver’s speed and damage output are higher than the Stalker’s, but it has less health. If you want to scan it, you need to get close, which is risky – use a stasis rifle and scan quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I kill the Shiver Leviathan?

Yes, but it is difficult. It has around 5000 health, and you would need multiple torpedoes or gas pods. However, it does not drop anything unique, so killing it is mostly for bragging rights. It will respawn after a few minutes.

Does the Shiver Leviathan appear in creative mode?

Yes, it spawns in all game modes, including creative. Even with god mode, it can still push you around, but it cannot kill you. You can scan it safely in creative mode.

Is there a way to avoid the Void entirely?

Yes – just stay within the map boundaries. The map is large enough for all story content. The Void is only necessary if you want to scan the Shiver or find the “edge of the world achievement.

What is the best vehicle to take into the Void?

The Prawn Suit (if available) with a grapple arm is the safest, because you can grapple onto the seafloor and escape. The Seamoth is faster but fragile. Avoid using the Seaglide – it is too slow and leaves you exposed.

Can I scan the Shiver Leviathan without getting killed?

Yes, but you need a stasis rifle. Freeze it, swim close, scan, and then swim away before the freeze wears off. The scan takes about 5 seconds, so you have enough time if you are quick.
