Semi Circle Circumference Calculator and Formula

A semi circle circumference calculator finds the full distance around a semicircle when you enter its radius. It returns the curved arc plus the straight diameter; you can also use it to find the arc alone or check the calculation by entering a diameter instead.

Formula

The perimeter, or circumference of the complete boundary of a semicircle, is the curved half-circle arc plus the straight diameter:

P = πr + 2r = r(π + 2)

  • P is the semicircle’s total perimeter, in the same length unit as the radius.
  • r is the radius: the distance from the circle’s center to its edge.
  • π is pi, approximately 3.14159265.
  • πr is the curved arc length of half a circle.
  • 2r is the diameter, the straight edge across the semicircle.

The calculator’s first result is the total perimeter. Its second result is only the curved arc, and its third is the diameter. All three use the same unit as the radius. The values displayed are rounded to two decimal places; the calculation uses the formula before rounding.

Worked Example

With the default radius of 5 units:

  1. Find the curved arc: π × 5 = 15.707963… units.
  2. Find the diameter: 2 × 5 = 10 units.
  3. Add the two boundary parts: 15.707963… + 10 = 25.707963… units.

Rounded to two decimal places, the total semicircle perimeter is 25.71 units. The curved arc is 15.71 units, and the diameter is 10.00 units.

What a Semicircle Circumference Includes

A semicircle is one half of a circle, made by cutting through the circle’s center along its diameter. The word “circumference” is often used for a circle’s curved boundary, but a semicircle’s complete boundary also includes the straight cut. For clarity, that full distance is commonly called its perimeter.

This distinction explains why simply dividing a circle’s circumference by two does not give the complete perimeter of a semicircle. Half the original circumference gives only the curved arc. You must add the diameter to include the straight edge.

If you need a length of trim following only the curved edge, use the arc result, πr. If you are measuring all the way around a semicircular sign, garden bed, or other outline, use the total perimeter, πr + 2r.

How to Use the Calculator

  • Measure the radius from the center of the original circle to its curved edge. If you know the diameter instead, divide it by two.
  • Enter the radius as a nonnegative number. The unit can be inches, feet, centimeters, meters, or another length unit.
  • Read the first result for the full boundary, including the straight edge. Use the arc result if the straight edge is not part of what you are measuring.
  • Keep the unit attached to each result. A radius in centimeters produces answers in centimeters, not square centimeters.

For instance, a 12-inch diameter corresponds to a radius of 6 inches. Substituting that radius gives a full perimeter of 6(π + 2), or about 30.85 inches. Do not enter 12 as the radius: that would treat the diameter as twice its actual size.

Choosing and Checking Measurements

You can calculate the perimeter from either radius or diameter. With diameter d, the equivalent formula is P = πd/2 + d, since the radius is d/2. The arc alone is πd/2. Use whichever measurement you have, but convert it to a radius if the calculator’s input specifically asks for radius.

Metric and US customary units work identically in the formula. A radius of 10 centimeters yields a perimeter in centimeters; a radius of 10 inches yields a perimeter in inches. If you need to combine measurements, convert them first. For example, do not add an arc measured in centimeters to a diameter measured in inches.

For a quick reasonableness check, the total perimeter should be greater than the diameter, because it includes the diameter plus a positive arc. It should also be greater than the arc alone. With radius 5, for example, the arc is about 15.71 and the diameter is 10, so the total is about 25.71 units.

Common Mistakes and Limits

  • Leaving out the straight side: πr gives only the curved half-circle. Add 2r to get the complete perimeter.
  • Using diameter as radius: The diameter is twice the radius. If the input requests radius, halve a known diameter before entering it.
  • Mixing units: Add lengths only after they are expressed in the same unit.
  • Rounding too early: Keep the full value of π through the calculation and round the final result. Intermediate rounding can make the answer slightly less accurate.
  • Confusing length and area: Perimeter is a one-dimensional length. The area of a semicircle is a different calculation, πr²/2, and is measured in square units.

The formula assumes a true semicircle: a straight diameter through the center and a circular arc with a constant radius. It gives an ideal geometric length. Real objects may have uneven edges, material thickness, or measurement error, so a practical cut length may need to account for those details separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the formula for the circumference of a semicircle?
The curved arc is πr. To include the straight diameter and find the complete perimeter, use πr + 2r, or r(π + 2).

Do you include the diameter in a semicircle’s circumference?
For the perimeter around the entire semicircle, yes. If you want only the curved part, calculate πr and do not add the diameter.

How do I calculate a semicircle perimeter from its diameter?
Divide the diameter by two to get the radius, then calculate πr + 2r. Equivalently, use πd/2 + d.

Is semicircle circumference the same as semicircle area?
No. Circumference or perimeter measures boundary length. Area measures the surface inside the shape and is πr²/2.

What units should I use?
Use any consistent length unit, such as millimeters, centimeters, meters, inches, or feet. The result will be in the same unit as the radius.
