Sea of Remnants: Combat Roguelike Runs vs Free RPG Rough Edges

Sea of Remnants is a free-to-play tactical combat roguelike that mixes grid-based battles with persistent RPG progression. You enter short runs with a squad of characters, fight through procedurally generated encounters, and keep some rewards after each run to upgrade your roster. The combat is the strongest part, but the surrounding RPG systems have noticeable rough edges that can frustrate new players.

Formula

The calculator works out your average pace and speed from a run or ride. The formulas are:

  • Pace (min/km) = Finish time (minutes) ÷ Distance (km)
  • Speed (km/h) = Distance (km) ÷ (Finish time (minutes) ÷ 60)

Where t is the finish time in minutes, and d is the distance in kilometers. Pace tells you how many minutes each kilometer took; speed tells you how many kilometers you covered in one hour.

Worked Example

Using the default values (t = 50 minutes, d = 10 km):

  1. Pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.00 min/km
  2. Speed = 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.00 km/h

So a 10 km run in 50 minutes is a 5:00 min/km pace and a 12.0 km/h average speed.

When to Use This Calculator

Use it after any run, jog, hike, or bike ride where you know the distance and total time. It works for any distance unit if you convert first (e.g., miles to km by multiplying by 1.60934). Runners often use pace to plan training efforts; cyclists and drivers more often think in speed. The calculator gives both so you can compare across sports.

How to Read the Result

The first output, pace, is the big number. A lower pace means faster running (fewer minutes per km). The second output, speed, is higher when you are faster. For example, a 6:00 min/km pace equals 10 km/h, while a 4:30 min/km pace equals 13.3 km/h. Use pace for running and speed for cycling or driving.

Common Mistakes

  • Mixing units: If your distance is in miles, convert to km first (1 mile = 1.60934 km), or the pace will be wrong.
  • Using seconds instead of minutes: Enter total minutes, not seconds. If you ran 50 minutes and 30 seconds, enter 50.5.
  • Rounding too early: Keep at least two decimals in intermediate steps to avoid a wrong final speed.

Limits of the Formula

This is an average over the whole trip. It does not account for stops, elevation changes, or uneven effort. If you paused your watch, the time you enter should be moving time, not elapsed time. The formula assumes constant speed, which is rarely true, but the average is still useful for training and planning.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert my pace from min/km to min/mile?

Multiply the min/km pace by 1.60934. For example, 5:00 min/km becomes about 8:03 min/mile. To convert the other way, divide by 1.60934.

What is a good running pace for a beginner?

Most beginners run between 7:00 and 10:00 min/km (about 11:15 to 16:00 min/mile). That is a conversational effort where you can still talk. Faster than 6:00 min/km is considered quite fit for a recreational runner.

Does the calculator work for walking?

Yes. A typical walking pace is 10 to 15 min/km (about 16 to 24 min/mile). Enter the same way, and you will get your walking speed, usually 4 to 6 km/h.

Why is my speed lower than what my treadmill shows?

Treadmills often overestimate speed, and they do not account for air resistance or terrain. Outdoor running with stops and turns usually gives a lower average speed. Also, verify your distance measurement – GPS can be off in tunnels or dense areas.

Can I use this for cycling?

Yes. Enter the distance you rode and the total moving time. Cyclists typically average 20-30 km/h on flat roads. The pace output is less useful for cycling, so focus on the speed number.

What if I only know my pace and want time?

Multiply your pace (min/km) by the distance (km) to get total minutes. For example, 6:00 min/km × 8 km = 48 minutes. Then add any rest stops separately.
