Sonos Soundbar Reset Steps & What Gets Erased

To reset a Sonos soundbar (Playbar, Playbase, Beam, Beam Gen 2, Arc, or Arc SL), you press and hold the join button (and, on some models, the volume down button) until the light blinks, which returns the soundbar to factory settings. This process erases all saved settings, including your Wi-Fi network credentials, paired subwoofers and surround speakers, and the soundbar’s room assignment in your Sonos system.

Why You Might Need to Reset Your Sonos Soundbar

Resetting is a last-resort troubleshooting step. It is different from simply rebooting, which just powers the device off and on. You would typically reset when:

  • The soundbar becomes unresponsive to the Sonos app or its physical buttons.
  • You are selling or giving away the soundbar and need to remove your personal network information.
  • You are moving the soundbar to a completely new Wi-Fi network and the app won’t let you change the settings.
  • You are experiencing persistent connection drops or audio dropouts that a reboot and router restart did not fix.

What a Reset Erases (and What It Doesn’t)

Before you reset, it’s important to know exactly what you lose and what stays intact. A factory reset wipes the soundbar’s internal memory of any user-configured data. This includes:

  • Wi-Fi network name and password – the soundbar will forget how to connect to your router.
  • Room assignment – the soundbar will no longer be associated with the room you created in the Sonos app (e.g., “Living Roomâ€).
  • Paired components – any Sub or surround speakers (Sonos One, One SL, etc.) that were bonded to the soundbar will be unpaired.
  • Audio settings – EQ adjustments, volume limits, and surround audio levels will revert to defaults.
  • Trueplay tuning – the acoustic calibration data for your room will be deleted.

What is not erased is the Sonos account itself. Your music services, playlists, and other speakers remain in your Sonos system. The reset only affects the physical soundbar. After resetting, you will need to add the soundbar back to your system via the Sonos app, which will require your Wi-Fi password and a re-pairing of any Sub or surrounds.

Model-Specific Reset Steps

The exact button combination varies by model. Here are the current instructions for each Sonos soundbar:

Sonos Arc / Arc SL

  1. Unplug the power cable from the Arc.
  2. While the cable is unplugged, press and hold the join button (the small button on the back, near the power port).
  3. Keep holding the join button and plug the power cable back in.
  4. Continue holding the join button until the light on the front of the Arc blinks orange and white.
  5. Release the button. The light will turn solid white, then blink green when the reset is complete.

Sonos Beam (Gen 1 and Gen 2)

  1. Unplug the power cable.
  2. Press and hold the join button on the back (near the power port).
  3. While holding the join button, plug the power cable back in.
  4. Keep holding until the light blinks orange and white.
  5. Release. The light will blink green to confirm.

Sonos Playbar

  1. Unplug the power cable.
  2. Press and hold the join button on the back (right side when facing the front).
  3. With the button held, plug the power cable back in.
  4. Wait for the light to blink orange and white, then release.

Sonos Playbase

  1. Unplug the power cable.
  2. Press and hold the join button on the back (near the optical port).
  3. While holding, plug the power cable back in.
  4. Keep holding until the light blinks orange and white.
  5. Release. The light will blink green when done.

For all models, if the light does not blink orange and white after a few seconds, you may not have held the button long enough or the button may be stuck. Try again with a firm press.

How to Reconnect After a Reset

Once the soundbar has been reset, it will appear as a new device. To set it up again:

  1. Open the Sonos app on your phone or tablet.
  2. Tap the gear icon (Settings) and select “System then “Add or “Add Product.
  3. Follow the prompts to connect the soundbar to your Wi-Fi network. The app will ask for your network password.
  4. If you have a Sub or surround speakers, the app will guide you through pairing them again.
  5. You will need to re-run Trueplay tuning if you use an iOS device (Trueplay is not available on Android).

If you have multiple Sonos speakers, the app will ask if you want to add the soundbar to an existing room or create a new one. Choose the room that matches where the soundbar is physically located.

Common Problems and Misconceptions

Many users confuse a factory reset with a simple reboot. A reboot (unplugging and plugging back in) does not erase any settings and is the first step to try for most issues. A factory reset should only be done after rebooting and checking your router.

Another common misconception is that resetting will remove your Sonos account or music services. It does not. Your account is tied to your email and password, not to any single speaker. The reset only affects the speaker itself.

If you are resetting because you are selling the soundbar, you should also remove it from your Sonos system in the app before resetting. Go to Settings > System > [Room name] and select “Remove Product. This ensures the soundbar is fully unlinked from your account.

Alternatives to a Full Reset

If you are having issues but want to avoid the hassle of re-setting up your soundbar, try these first:

  • Reboot the soundbar – unplug it for 10 seconds, then plug it back in.
  • Reboot your router – power cycle your router and wait for it to fully restart.
  • Check for updates – open the Sonos app and go to Settings > System > Updates to ensure the soundbar has the latest firmware.
  • Change the Wi-Fi channel – if you have interference, try a different channel on your router.
  • Use an Ethernet cable – for a stable connection, you can hardwire the soundbar to your router (the Playbar, Playbase, and Arc have an Ethernet port; the Beam does not).

Only if these steps fail should you proceed with a factory reset.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will resetting my Sonos soundbar delete my music library?

No. Your music library, playlists, and streaming service accounts are stored in the Sonos app and on your Sonos account, not on the soundbar. After resetting, you will need to re-add the soundbar to your system, but your music will still be there.

Can I reset my Sonos soundbar without the app?

Yes, the reset process uses only the physical buttons on the soundbar. You do not need the app to perform the reset. However, you will need the app to set the soundbar up again afterward.

Why is my Sonos soundbar not resetting?

If the light does not blink orange and white, you may not be holding the join button long enough, or the button may be unresponsive. Try using a paperclip or a pen tip to press the button firmly. Also, ensure the power cable is fully unplugged before you start.

Does a reset fix all Sonos soundbar problems?

No. A reset only clears settings and reconnects the device to your network. If the issue is hardware-related (e.g., a faulty power supply or speaker driver), a reset will not fix it. In that case, contact Sonos support.

What is the difference between a soft reset and a factory reset?

A soft reset (reboot) simply powers the device off and on, clearing temporary glitches. A factory reset erases all settings and returns the device to its out-of-the-box state. Use a soft reset first; only do a factory reset if the problem persists.
