Record Desktop Entire Screen Windows 10

To record your entire desktop screen in Windows 10, you can use the built-in Xbox Game Bar (Win+G) or the Clipchamp app, both of which are free and require no extra downloads. This article explains the built-in methods, how to choose between them, and how to fix common recording problems.

Built-in Tools: Xbox Game Bar and Clipchamp

Windows 10 includes two native screen recorders, each with a different purpose:

  • Xbox Game Bar – a lightweight overlay that records the active window or the entire screen. It is designed for games but works for any app. It saves recordings as MP4 files in your Videos folder.
  • Clipchamp – a full video editor with a screen recorder. It is installed by default on recent Windows 10 builds (starting with version 22H2). It can record the whole screen, a specific window, or a browser tab, and it lets you trim and export.

Neither tool requires a Microsoft account, though Clipchamp may prompt you to sign in for some features. Both are free, but Clipchamp adds a watermark on exports unless you sign in with a free Microsoft account.

How to Record with Xbox Game Bar

  1. Press Win+G to open the Game Bar overlay.
  2. If you see a dialog asking “Do you want to open Game Bar?, tick the box and click “Yes.
  3. Click the Record button (a circle icon) or press Win+Alt+R to start recording.
  4. A small timer appears. Click the square stop button or press Win+Alt+R again to stop.
  5. Find the video in Videos > Captures (or in the Game Bar’s “Show all captures gallery).

By default, Game Bar records the entire screen, including the taskbar. If you only want a single window, you can check the “Record audio option and choose a specific window in the capture settings, but the simplest method for the whole desktop is just pressing the record button.

How to Record with Clipchamp

  1. Open Clipchamp from the Start menu (search “Clipchamp).
  2. Click Create a new video.
  3. In the toolbar, click Record (the camera icon) and choose Screen.
  4. Select “Full screen from the dropdown.
  5. Choose whether to record system audio and your microphone (toggle them on/off).
  6. Click the red Record button. A 3-second countdown appears.
  7. When you are done, click “Stop sharing or press the stop button in the browser/desktop capture bar.
  8. The recording appears in your project. You can trim it or export it directly by clicking Export.

Clipchamp records in 1080p by default. You can change the resolution in the export settings (up to 4K, but 4K export requires a paid plan).

Choosing the Right Tool

  • Use Game Bar if you want a quick, no-frills recording with minimal clicks, and you don’t need to edit the video afterwards. It’s the fastest way to capture something on the fly.
  • Use Clipchamp if you want to record the whole screen plus your webcam, add a voiceover, or trim/cut the video without leaving the app. It’s also better if you need to record a browser tab with internal audio (Game Bar can’t capture a single tab’s audio).

For most “record my entire desktop needs, Game Bar is sufficient. If you plan to make a tutorial or presentation, Clipchamp gives you more control.

Common Problems and Fixes

Problem: Game Bar won’t start or records a black screen.
This often happens when the app you are recording uses hardware acceleration (e.g., a web browser or a video player). Try disabling hardware acceleration in that app’s settings, or use Clipchamp instead. Also, make sure your graphics drivers are up to date.

Problem: No audio in the recording.
In Game Bar, click the settings gear, then “Capturing and ensure “Record audio is set to “On. In Clipchamp, check that the system audio toggle is enabled before you start. If you are recording a video call, the other person’s audio may not be captured if it’s played through a different device – set your speakers as the default playback device.

Problem: The recording stops after a few seconds.
Game Bar has a maximum recording length of 4 hours, but if you run out of disk space or the system is under heavy load, it may stop early. Free up space and close unnecessary programs.

Problem: The video file is too large.
Game Bar saves in MP4 with H.264 compression, which is efficient but still large for long recordings. Clipchamp lets you choose a lower resolution or bitrate during export. You can also use a third-party converter to compress the file afterwards.

Alternative Methods (Third-Party Tools)

If the built-in tools don’t meet your needs, several free and paid programs record the entire screen. Popular free options include OBS Studio, ShareX, and the free version of Bandicam (which adds a watermark). OBS Studio is the most powerful – it allows unlimited recording length, multiple audio tracks, and custom settings. However, it has a steeper learning curve. ShareX is simpler and can capture the full screen with a single hotkey, but it lacks built-in editing.

For quick one-off recordings, you can also use the Win+Alt+R shortcut directly – it starts Game Bar recording immediately without opening the overlay. Press the same shortcut to stop.

Recording Audio and Microphone

Both Game Bar and Clipchamp can record system audio (what you hear) and your microphone separately. In Game Bar, you can adjust the volume sliders for “Game and “Microphone during recording. In Clipchamp, you toggle the two audio sources before you start. If you want to record only your voice (e.g., for a narration), turn off system audio. If you want to record a video call, enable both – but be aware that the other person’s voice will be captured as system audio, not as a separate track.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Game Bar record the entire screen or just the active window?
By default, Game Bar records the entire screen, including the taskbar and any open windows. It does not offer a “window only mode in the standard interface. If you need to record just one window, use Clipchamp and select “Window instead of “Full screen.

Can I record my desktop with audio using Game Bar?
Yes, as long as you enable “Record audio in the Game Bar settings. It will capture whatever sounds your computer plays, including system notifications and app sounds. It does not capture your microphone unless you turn that on separately.

Why is my Game Bar recording black?
This usually happens when the screen content is protected (like a DRM video) or when the app uses hardware acceleration. Try closing the app and reopening it, disabling hardware acceleration, or using Clipchamp, which handles this better in many cases.

Where are my recordings saved?
Game Bar saves to C:\(YourUserName)\Videos\Captures by default. Clipchamp saves your project in the app, and you export the final video to any folder you choose.

Can I record longer than 4 hours?
Game Bar has a 4-hour limit per recording. Clipchamp does not have a stated limit, but your computer’s storage and memory will be the practical constraint. For very long recordings (e.g., a full day), consider OBS Studio, which has no built-in limit.

Is there a way to record without the Game Bar overlay appearing?
Yes, press Win+Alt+R to start recording directly. The overlay will not appear, only a small timer in the corner. To stop, press the same shortcut again.
