This page explains what the numbers under photos on Plenty of Fish (POF) mean, how the site displays them, and how to interpret or hide them. The numbers you see under photos on POF are part of the profile’s photo rating system and are not visible to other users—they are only shown to you as the account owner.
Formula
The calculator above is a generic pace calculator—it is not related to POF. It computes your average pace and speed from a finish time and distance. The formula for pace is:
pace (min/km) = finish time (min) ÷ distance (km)
speed (km/h) = distance (km) ÷ (finish time (min) ÷ 60)
Where finish time is in minutes, distance is in kilometers, and the result is rounded to two decimals.
Worked Example
Using the default values: finish time = 50 minutes, distance = 10 km.
- Pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.00 min/km
- Speed = 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.00 km/h
The calculator returns 5.00 min/km and 12.00 km/h.
What the Numbers Under POF Photos Actually Mean
On Plenty of Fish, each profile photo can receive a rating from other users. The site used to show a numeric “attractiveness score (like 7.2 or 8.5) to the account owner, but as of recent updates, POF no longer displays a public score. However, some users still see numbers under their own photos in the editing view. These numbers are internal ratings—they are not visible to other members. They are based on how other users rate your photo when they vote (e.g., “hot or “not). The number is an average of those votes, usually on a scale of 1 to 10.
How the Rating System Works
POF’s photo rating system works like this:
- Users are shown random photos and asked to rate them as “hot or “not.
- Each “hot vote adds to a positive score; each “not vote subtracts or lowers the average.
- The number under your photo is the aggregate score based on those votes.
- Only you can see this number when you edit your profile; other users see the photo without any number.
If you see a number like “7.5 under a photo, it means that photo has received an average rating of 7.5 out of 10 from other POF members who voted.
How to Choose Which Photos to Keep
If you see numbers under your photos, you can use them as feedback:
- Higher numbers (8 or above) indicate the photo is generally well-received.
- Lower numbers (below 5) suggest the photo may not be appealing to most users.
- Consider replacing low-scoring photos with clearer, well-lit, and genuine shots.
- Keep your primary photo as your highest-scoring one, since that is what appears in search results.
Remember that ratings are subjective and based on a small sample of voters, so don’t over-optimize for a number.
Common Problems and Misconceptions
Many users wonder if the numbers are visible to others, or if they affect your profile’s visibility. Here are the facts:
- The numbers are private—only you see them.
- They do not directly affect your profile’s ranking in search results.
- They are not a measure of your worth; they are just one metric.
- If you see a “0 or a blank, it may mean no one has rated that photo yet.
A common misconception is that the number is a “match score with a specific user. That is false—the number is only a general photo rating.
How to Hide or Remove the Numbers
If you find the numbers distracting, you cannot disable the rating system entirely, but you can:
- Delete low-scoring photos and replace them with new ones.
- Ignore the numbers and focus on your profile text and overall presentation.
- Use the mobile app—some versions do not show the numbers in the editing view.
There is no official setting to turn off photo ratings on POF.
Comparison: POF vs Other Dating Apps
Other dating apps handle photo ratings differently:
- Tinder uses an internal ELO score but does not show it to users.
- Bumble does not display any numeric rating.
- OkCupid used to show a “popularity percentage but removed it.
POF is unique in that it shows a numeric score to the account owner, but it is not a public feature.
Safety and Privacy Notes
Your photo ratings are private, but remember that any photo you upload can be seen by other users. Do not upload photos that reveal your exact location, workplace, or other personal details. Also, be cautious about sharing photos that are too revealing—they may attract unwanted attention. The rating system is not a reflection of your character, so do not take it personally.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the numbers under POF photos visible to other users?
No, the numbers are only visible to you when you edit your profile. Other users see your photos without any rating.
What does a high number mean on POF photos?
A high number (like 8 or 9) means that other users who voted rated that photo as attractive. It is an average of votes on a scale of 1 to 10.
Can I delete a photo with a low number?
Yes, you can delete any photo from your profile. If you delete a low-scoring photo, the number will disappear, and you can replace it with a better one.
Why do some of my photos have no number?
If a photo has no number, it likely hasn’t received enough votes yet, or the rating feature was not applied to that photo. It may also be a new photo that hasn’t been rated.
Does the photo rating affect my matches?
No, the photo rating does not directly affect your matches. It is just a private metric. Matches are based on your profile, preferences, and activity.
Can I reset my photo ratings?
There is no official way to reset ratings. You can delete the photo and re-upload it, but it may still get similar ratings if it’s the same image.
