Pin Code Distance Calculator: How It Works
The calculator for this page is switched off while it is checked. The formula is below, and the worked example in the article shows how to use it by hand.
A pin code distance calculator works out the straight-line (as-the-crow-flies) distance between two Indian postal PIN codes, using their latitude and longitude coordinates. You enter two PIN codes, and the calculator returns the distance in kilometres (and often miles) between the two points. This is useful for logistics, delivery estimates, travel planning, and general curiosity about how far apart two places are.
Formula
The calculator uses the haversine formula, which calculates the great-circle distance between two points on a sphere given their latitudes and longitudes. The formula is:
a = sin²(Δφ/2) + cos φ1 ⋅ cos φ2 ⋅ sin²(Δλ/2)
c = 2 ⋅ atan2( √a, √(1−a) )
d = R ⋅ c
Where:
- φ1, φ2 are the latitudes of the two points (in radians)
- Δφ is the difference in latitude (in radians)
- Δλ is the difference in longitude (in radians)
- R is the Earth’s radius (mean radius = 6,371 km)
- d is the distance between the two points (in km)
The calculator converts the PIN code to its latitude and longitude using a built-in database of Indian PIN codes. Then it applies the haversine formula to compute the distance.
Worked Example
Let’s calculate the distance between New Delhi (PIN 110001) and Mumbai (PIN 400001).
- New Delhi (110001): latitude = 28.6139° N, longitude = 77.2090° E
- Mumbai (400001): latitude = 18.9750° N, longitude = 72.8258° E
- Convert degrees to radians:
- φ1 = 28.6139 × π/180 = 0.4994 rad
- φ2 = 18.9750 × π/180 = 0.3311 rad
- Δφ = (18.9750 – 28.6139) × π/180 = -0.1683 rad
- Δλ = (72.8258 – 77.2090) × π/180 = -0.0765 rad
- Compute a:
a = sin²(-0.1683/2) + cos(0.4994) ⋅ cos(0.3311) ⋅ sin²(-0.0765/2) = 0.00707 + 0.8786 × 0.9455 × 0.00146 = 0.00707 + 0.00121 = 0.00828 - Compute c:
c = 2 ⋅ atan2(√0.00828, √(1-0.00828)) = 2 ⋅ atan2(0.0910, 0.9958) = 2 × 0.0912 = 0.1824 rad - Compute distance:
d = 6371 × 0.1824 = 1162.1 km
So the distance between New Delhi and Mumbai is approximately 1162 km. The calculator rounds to 1162.1 km.
How PIN Codes Relate to Location
Indian PIN codes (Postal Index Number) are six-digit codes introduced in 1972. The first digit indicates the region, the second digit indicates the sub-region, the third digit indicates the sorting district, and the last three digits indicate the specific post office. However, PIN codes do not directly encode latitude/longitude; they are administrative codes. To calculate distance, the calculator must map each PIN code to its geographical coordinates (the location of the head post office or the centroid of the area). This mapping is approximate—the actual distance between two points within the same PIN code area can vary by a few kilometres.
Limitations and Accuracy
The distance calculated is the great-circle distance (straight line) on the Earth’s surface. It does not account for:
- Road networks: Actual road distance is typically 20-30% longer due to curves and detours.
- Terrain: Mountains, rivers, and other obstacles are ignored.
- Postal delivery routes: The actual delivery route may differ significantly.
- PIN code mapping: The coordinates used are for the post office location, not necessarily the exact address. For large cities, the PIN code covers a small area (a few km), but in rural areas, it can cover a large region.
For most purposes, the great-circle distance is a good estimate for distances over 100 km. For shorter distances, the error from road curvature becomes more significant.
How to Use the Calculator Effectively
To get the best results:
- Enter the full 6-digit PIN codes (e.g., 110001).
- Use the correct PIN codes for the exact post offices you need—don’t use the city’s general PIN if you need a specific area.
- Interpret the result as a straight-line distance, not a driving distance.
- For logistics, add 20-30% to estimate road distance.
Common Mistakes and Misconceptions
One common mistake is assuming the distance is the driving distance. The calculator gives the shortest possible distance on a globe, not the distance you would travel by road. Another misconception is that PIN codes are unique to a single building—they are not; they cover a post office’s delivery area. Also, some PIN codes may not be in the database, especially newly created ones. In that case, the calculator cannot compute the distance.
Alternatives to PIN Code Distance
If you need road distance, use a mapping service like Google Maps or a GPS device. If you have the exact addresses, you can use geocoding to get coordinates and then calculate distance. For air travel, the great-circle distance is the standard. For rail or road, use the specific route distance.
Why Use a PIN Code Distance Calculator?
This tool is handy when you only have PIN codes (e.g., in logistics software, e-commerce shipping, or planning a trip). It gives a quick estimate without needing to look up coordinates or use a map. It’s also useful for comparing distances between multiple locations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the distance calculated by PIN code the same as the driving distance?
No. The calculator gives the straight-line (great-circle) distance, which is the shortest distance over the Earth’s surface. Driving distance is longer due to roads, highways, and detours. Typically, driving distance is 20-30% longer.
How accurate is the PIN code distance?
The accuracy depends on the precision of the coordinates assigned to each PIN code. For most PIN codes, the coordinates are accurate to within a few kilometres. For long distances (over 100 km), the error is small relative to the total distance. For short distances, the error can be significant.
Can I use this calculator for any country?
No. This calculator is specifically for Indian PIN codes. Other countries have different postal code systems (e.g., ZIP codes in the US, postcodes in the UK). You would need a calculator that uses the appropriate postal code database for those countries.
What if the PIN code is not found?
If a PIN code is not in the database, the calculator cannot compute the distance. This can happen for newly created PIN codes or if the code is entered incorrectly. Double-check the code and try again.
Does the calculator account for the Earth’s curvature?
Yes, it uses the haversine formula, which accounts for the Earth’s spherical shape. For very long distances, this is more accurate than using a flat map.
Can I use the distance for shipping cost estimation?
Yes, but remember that shipping costs depend on many factors besides distance, such as weight, dimensions, service type, and courier rates. The distance gives you a rough idea, but you should check with the courier for exact costs.
