Obsidian How to Link Folders: What Works and What Doesn't

Obsidian does not create ordinary links to folders in the same way it links to notes: its standard internal links point to files, usually Markdown notes. To connect a folder to your notes, create a note inside that folder and link to it, or use a file-system path when you specifically need to open the folder outside Obsidian.

How Obsidian links work

An Obsidian vault is a folder on your device containing notes and, optionally, other files and subfolders. A standard wikilink such as [[Project Plan]] refers to a note named “Project Plan,” not to a directory named “Project Plan.” Markdown links can also point to files, but a directory is not itself a note that Obsidian can display as a normal linked page.

This distinction matters because a folder is mainly an organizational location, while a note has content and can participate in Obsidian’s backlinks, graph, search, and linking features. If you want a clickable page that represents a folder, the most reliable approach is to make that page a note.

Make a folder note and link to it

  1. In the File Explorer pane, create a folder for the subject, or select the folder you already use.
  2. Create a Markdown note inside it. For example, for Projects/Website, create Projects/Website/Website.md.
  3. Add useful information to the note, such as the folder’s purpose, important files, or links to related notes.
  4. From another note, enter [[Website]]. If Obsidian finds multiple notes with that name, use a more specific path, such as [[Projects/Website/Website]].

You can give the link a different visible label with an alias: [[Projects/Website/Website|Website folder]]. The reader sees “Website folder,” while the link still opens the note. This is often the clearest option for a home page, project index, or topic hub.

For a folder called Recipes, for example, you could create Recipes/Recipes.md, add links to individual recipe notes, and link to it from a general index with [[Recipes/Recipes|Browse recipes]].

Link to a specific file inside a folder

If your goal is to connect to something stored in a folder rather than to the folder itself, link directly to the file. Obsidian’s link suggestions can help you find notes and supported attachments as you type. A note link might look like [[Projects/Website/Launch checklist]]. For an attachment, you can use Obsidian’s file-link syntax, for example [[Images/logo.png]], provided the file is in the vault and the path matches its location.

For Markdown-style links, a relative path can also point to a file, such as [Launch checklist](Projects/Website/Launch%20checklist.md). Spaces in Markdown destinations may need URL encoding; Obsidian’s wikilink syntax is usually simpler for links within a vault. Exact path behavior can depend on how the link is written and the app’s link settings, so use the editor’s suggestions where possible.

Open a folder in your device’s file manager

A folder path can be useful when you want to open a location in the operating system rather than navigate to an Obsidian note. For example, a local file URI may take the form file:///..., but these links are platform-specific and can behave differently across Windows, macOS, Linux, mobile devices, and synced vaults. They may also stop working if the vault is moved or the path changes.

For those reasons, do not treat a local folder URI as a portable Obsidian link. It is not a substitute for an internal note link, and it may not open as expected from every device or app context. If the folder needs to be reachable from notes across devices, create a folder note in the vault and link to that instead.

Choose the right approach

  • Use a folder note when you want a stable, searchable page that introduces or organizes a folder’s contents.
  • Link to an individual note or attachment when a reader needs a particular file.
  • Use a file-system link only when opening the actual directory in a local file manager is the intended action and you accept that it may be device-specific.
  • Use the File Explorer pane when you simply need to browse folders while working in Obsidian; a link is not required.

A folder note is also more useful than a bare folder link because it can explain why the folder exists and list its key contents. It does not automatically display every file in that folder, though: add links or other guidance yourself if you want an index.

Common problems and misconceptions

“The folder name appears, but the link does not open it.” A wikilink typed as [[Folder name]] is treated as a request for a note with that name. Create a note, often inside the folder, and link to that note instead.

“Obsidian cannot find the note.” Check spelling, spaces, and the note’s location. If several files share a name, specify enough of the path to distinguish the intended note. Also confirm that the file is inside the vault; a file elsewhere on the device is not automatically an internal vault link.

“The link works on one device but not another.” This commonly happens with absolute file-system paths, because another device may use a different folder location or operating system. Internal links to notes in the vault are generally the more portable choice, provided the linked files are present on that device.

“A folder note should list its contents automatically.” A normal Markdown note is just a note. It does not become a live folder browser merely because it shares the folder’s name. You can maintain a list of links, use the File Explorer pane, or look for a community plugin if you specifically need generated folder listings. Community plugins are optional and are not required for basic links.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I link directly to a folder in Obsidian?
Not as a standard internal wikilink that opens the folder as a page. Link to a note inside it, or use a platform-specific file-system link if you need to open the directory externally.

How do I make a clickable folder index?
Create a Markdown note in the folder, add links to its important notes or files, then link to that note from elsewhere using a wikilink.

Can I link to a subfolder or a note inside one?
You can link to a note inside a subfolder by including its path, such as [[Projects/Website/Launch checklist]]. That links to the note, not to the subfolder itself.

Will a folder link work on mobile?
A local file-system URI may not, because its path and supported behavior can vary by device. A link to a note stored in the vault is usually the better cross-device option.

Do I need a plugin to link folders?
No plugin is needed to link to a folder note or to notes and files in a vault. Plugins may offer extra folder-indexing features, but they do not change the basic distinction between a folder and a note.
