Modern Warfare 4 Open Beta Dates & Switch Play
Modern Warfare 4 does not have any announced open beta dates, and it is not planned for the Nintendo Switch. The game is developed for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, with cross-play between those platforms. This article explains what is known about the beta schedule, why a Switch version is unlikely, and what your options are if you want to play on Nintendo hardware.
What We Know About the Open Beta
As of now, the developer has not officially announced Modern Warfare 4 or its beta dates. The previous title in the series, Modern Warfare III, had an open beta in October 2023, with early access for pre-orders and a free weekend for all players. If the pattern holds, a future beta would likely arrive a few weeks before launch, typically in late summer or early fall. However, you should treat any specific dates you see online as rumors unless they come from the official Call of Duty channels.
Why the Switch Is Not Included
Modern Warfare titles have not appeared on Nintendo consoles since the Wii U era. The Switch’s hardware is significantly less powerful than the PS5, Xbox Series X, or a gaming PC, and the game engine is built for high-end systems. While the Switch has received some cloud-based versions of games (like Control and Hitman 3), Activision has not shown interest in cloud streaming for Call of Duty. The company did sign a deal with Nintendo in 2023 to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo platforms, but that deal is about future consoles, not the current Switch.
How to Play on Other Platforms
If you want to play Modern Warfare 4 when it releases, you will need a PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One/Series X|S, or a PC. The game will likely support cross-play, so you can squad up with friends on other systems. To join an open beta, you typically need to pre-order the game or wait for the free-access weekend. On PC, you will need to install the Battle.net desktop app or the Steam client, depending on which platform the game launches on. Keep your system storage ready—recent Call of Duty games require over 100 GB of space.
Your Options on Nintendo Switch
If you only own a Switch, you have a few alternatives for a similar experience:
- Play older Call of Duty titles that are on Switch, like Call of Duty: Black Ops (via cloud) or Call of Duty: Ghosts (via cloud). These are streamed, not downloaded, so they require a strong internet connection.
- Try free-to-play shooters on Switch like Fortnite, Apex Legends, or Overwatch 2. Overwatch 2 is a hero shooter, but it offers a similar fast-paced team-based feel.
- Consider cloud gaming services like NVIDIA GeForce NOW, but note that Call of Duty is not currently available on that service.
- Wait for the next Nintendo console, which may receive Call of Duty games under the 2023 agreement.
Common Misconceptions
One common myth is that the Switch will get a “lite version of Modern Warfare 4. That has never been the case for mainline entries. Another misconception is that the beta is always open to everyone. In reality, early access is often reserved for pre-orders, and the open portion only lasts a weekend. Also, some players think the beta progress carries over to the full game—it usually does not, so you will start fresh at launch.
How to Stay Updated
The best way to get accurate beta dates is to follow the official Call of Duty social media accounts, check the Call of Duty website, or sign up for email updates. Avoid clicking on ads or third-party sites that claim to have “leaked beta codes—they are often scams. When the beta is announced, it will be widely covered by gaming news outlets, so you will not miss it if you check a reliable source once a week.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Modern Warfare 4 have a beta on Switch?
No. The beta will be on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC only, because the game is not being developed for the Switch.
Can I play Modern Warfare 4 on Switch via cloud streaming?
Not currently. Activision has not announced any cloud version of Modern Warfare 4 for the Switch. You can play some older Call of Duty games on Switch via cloud, but not the new one.
When is the Modern Warfare 4 open beta?
No official date has been announced. Based on past releases, expect it a few weeks before the game’s launch, but that is speculation.
Do I need to pre-order to play the beta?
Usually, pre-ordering gives you early access to the beta, but there is also a free open weekend for everyone. The exact structure will be announced closer to the beta.
Will my beta progress carry over to the full game?
In recent Call of Duty titles, beta progress does not carry over. You will start the full game with a fresh account, though you may earn a cosmetic reward for participating.
What are the best Switch alternatives to Modern Warfare 4?
If you want a military shooter, try Warface: Breakout or Sniper Elite 4 (though that is a third-person stealth game). For a more popular multiplayer experience, Fortnite and Apex Legends are your best bets.
