This calculator works out the average pace and speed from a finish time and distance, giving you the two numbers most runners and cyclists want to know. You enter your total time and the distance you covered, and it returns your average pace per kilometer or mile and your average speed. The first result, average pace, is shown as the headline answer in minutes per kilometer.
Formula
The average pace is the total time divided by the total distance:
pace = t / d
where:
- t = finish time in minutes
- d = distance in kilometers
The average speed is the distance divided by the time in hours:
speed = d / (t / 60)
where the time in hours is the minutes divided by 60.
Worked Example
Using the default values of a 50-minute finish time and a 10 km distance:
- Pace = 50 min ÷ 10 km = 5.00 min/km
- Speed = 10 km ÷ (50 ÷ 60) hours = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.00 km/h
The calculator shows 5.00 min/km and 12.00 km/h, matching the example.
When to Use This Calculator
Use this tool when you have a total time and a known distance and want to know your average pace or speed. It is common for:
- Training runs or rides where you track time and distance
- Race results – you know the official time and course distance
- Planning workouts – you want to hit a target pace for a given distance
The result is an average, not a split. It does not show how your pace varied during the activity.
How to Read the Result
The pace is given in minutes per kilometer (min/km). A lower number means a faster pace. For example, 4:30 min/km is faster than 5:00 min/km. The speed is in kilometers per hour (km/h); a higher number is faster. If you use miles, convert the distance to kilometers (1 mile = 1.60934 km) or the pace to min/mile by dividing the time in minutes by the distance in miles.
Note that the calculator uses decimal minutes. If your finish time is 1 hour 15 minutes, enter 75 minutes, not 1.25.
Common Mistakes and Unit Mix-ups
The most frequent error is mixing units. If you enter a distance in miles but read the pace as min/km, the number will be wrong. Always check the unit labels. Another mistake is entering time in hours and minutes as a decimal (e.g., 1.5 for 1 hour 30 minutes) – use 90 minutes instead. Also, the pace result is a decimal number of minutes, not a clock time. 5.50 min/km means 5 minutes and 30 seconds per kilometer, not 5:50.
Limits of the Formula
The formula assumes a constant pace over the entire distance. Real-world activities have hills, stops, and changes in effort, so the average pace may not reflect any specific segment. It also does not account for elevation gain, terrain, or weather, which can make the same pace feel harder or easier. For very short distances (under 400 m) the average speed may be misleading because acceleration and deceleration dominate.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert min/km to min/mile?
Multiply the pace in min/km by 1.60934 to get min/mile. For example, 5.00 min/km × 1.60934 = 8.05 min/mile (about 8:03 per mile).
What is a good average pace for a beginner runner?
It varies widely by age, fitness, and gender. A common recreational jogging pace is around 6 to 7 min/km (10 to 11.5 km/h). Competitive runners may be under 4 min/km. Focus on your own improvement rather than a fixed number.
Does the calculator work for cycling or walking?
Yes, the formula is the same for any activity where you have a total time and distance. For walking, typical paces are 10 to 15 min/km; for cycling, paces are often 2 to 4 min/km.
Why is my pace different from my GPS watch?
GPS watches measure instantaneous pace and may use smoothing algorithms. They also account for elevation changes and can be affected by GPS accuracy. The calculator gives a simple average based on the total time and distance you enter, which may differ from a watch’s reported average.
Can I use this for a marathon or half-marathon?
Yes. Enter the official finish time and the official course distance (42.195 km for a marathon, 21.0975 km for a half). The result is your average pace for the entire race.
