Life360 Add Family Member: Step-by-Step Guide

To add a family member on Life360, open the app, tap “Family” at the bottom, then tap “Add Member” (or the person icon) and choose “Invite by SMS” or “Invite by Email” to send an invitation. The person you invite must accept the invitation and create or log into their own Life360 account before they appear on your family circle.

What Life360 Is and How Circles Work

Life360 is a location-sharing app designed for families. It lets members of a private “Circle” see each other’s real-time location on a map, send check-ins, and get alerts for events like arriving at home or leaving a set place. The app works on both iOS and Android, and a free tier covers the basics: live location, location history for two days, and crash detection in some regions.

Each Circle is a separate group. You can be in more than one Circle (for example, a household Circle and a grandparents Circle), but every Circle has its own member list and settings. Adding a member means sending them an invitation to join a specific Circle, not the whole app.

Before You Add Someone: What They Need

The person you invite must have a smartphone with the Life360 app installed (or be willing to install it) and a valid phone number or email address. They also need to accept the invitation within a reasonable time – invitations do not expire quickly, but they can be canceled by the sender.

If the person already has a Life360 account, they can simply accept the invitation. If they don’t, they’ll be prompted to create one during the acceptance process. That account will be tied to their phone number or email, and they’ll need to grant location permissions to the app on their device.

Step-by-Step: Adding a Member on iPhone and Android

The steps are nearly identical on both platforms because the app’s interface is the same. Here’s exactly what to do:

  1. Open the Life360 app on your phone and log in if you aren’t already.
  2. Tap the “Family” tab at the bottom of the screen (it looks like a small house or a person icon).
  3. Look for the “Add Member” button – usually a plus sign or a person with a plus. It might be at the top right or under the list of current members.
  4. Tap “Invite by SMS” to send a text message with a download link and invitation code, or “Invite by Email” to send an email instead.
  5. Enter the person’s phone number or email address, then tap “Send Invite” or “Invite.”
  6. The recipient will get a message with a link. They tap the link, which takes them to the App Store or Google Play to install Life360 if they don’t have it, then they open the app and follow the prompts to join your Circle.

Once they accept, they’ll appear in your Circle’s member list, and you’ll be able to see their location (provided they’ve granted location permission). The whole process usually takes under five minutes, but it depends on how quickly the invitee acts.

What If the Invitation Doesn’t Arrive or They Can’t Accept?

Sometimes invitations get lost or the recipient has trouble joining. Here are the most common issues and what to do:

  • Check spam folders: Email invitations occasionally land in spam or promotions. Ask the recipient to check those folders before resending.
  • Resend the invitation: In the “Family” tab, tap “Add Member” again and choose the same phone number or email. This sends a fresh invitation.
  • Verify the phone number: If you used SMS, make sure you entered the number with the correct country code. Life360 requires the full international format for some regions.
  • Old account conflict: If the person already has a Life360 account with a different email or phone, they may need to log out and log in with the correct one before accepting.
  • App permissions: After accepting, the new member must allow location access “Always” (or “While Using” on some devices) for the app to share their location properly. If they denied it during setup, they can change it in their phone’s settings.

If none of these work, the simplest fix is to remove the pending invitation and start over. To remove a pending invite, go to the member list, tap the person’s name (or the “Pending” label), and choose “Cancel Invitation.” Then send a new one.

Can You Add Someone Without Them Knowing?

No. Life360 requires every member to accept an invitation and to have the app installed on their own phone. You cannot add someone to your Circle without their consent, and you cannot track a phone that doesn’t have the app running. This is a deliberate privacy feature – the app is designed for mutual, voluntary sharing within a trusted group.

That said, there is a common misconception that Life360 can be installed on a child’s phone and then hidden. While the app can be hidden from the home screen on some devices, the child will still see it in their app drawer and will receive notifications. There is no way to add a person who doesn’t want to be added.

Managing Members After They Join

Once a member is added, you can control several things from the “Family” tab:

  • Change their role: The Circle creator (or an admin) can make someone an admin, which gives them permission to add/remove members and change settings.
  • Set location sharing: Each member can choose to share location always, only while using the app, or not at all. You can’t force someone to share their location.
  • Remove a member: Tap the member’s name, then scroll down and choose “Remove from Circle.” This immediately stops sharing between you and that person.
  • Mute notifications: You can mute alerts for a specific member if they’re constantly triggering notifications (e.g., arriving at school).

Removing a member does not delete their Life360 account – it just removes them from that Circle. They can still use the app with other Circles they belong to.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many people can I add to a Life360 Circle?

A Circle can have up to 10 members on the free plan. If you need more, you’d have to create a second Circle or upgrade to a paid plan (Life360 Plus or Premium) which allows up to 20 members per Circle. However, most families don’t exceed 10.

Can I add a member who lives in another country?

Yes, Life360 works internationally as long as the person has a compatible smartphone and an internet connection. The invitation is sent via SMS or email, so the only requirement is that they can receive one of those. Location accuracy may vary in areas with poor GPS or cellular coverage.

Why can’t I see the new member’s location after they joined?

Usually it’s a permission issue. The new member needs to open Life360 and allow location access. On iPhones, go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Life360 and select “Always.” On Android, go to Settings > Apps > Life360 > Permissions and enable Location. Also, make sure their phone has a working internet connection and that the app isn’t in battery saver mode, which can pause background location updates.

Can I add a member without sending them an invitation?

No. Every member must accept an invitation. There is no way to add someone directly without their involvement. This is a security measure to prevent unauthorized tracking.

What happens if the invited person never accepts?

The invitation stays pending indefinitely, but you can cancel it at any time. If the person never accepts, they simply won’t appear in your Circle. You can also resend the invitation to remind them.

Is there a way to add a member using a QR code?

Life360 does not use QR codes for adding members. The only methods are SMS or email invitations. Some third-party guides mention QR codes, but that’s not a feature in the current version of the app.
