IDM File Moved? Fix It in 2 Minutes

If you see an “IDM file has been moved” error, it means Internet Download Manager cannot find a file it was tracking, usually because you moved, renamed, or deleted the download after it finished. The fix is to tell IDM where the file now lives or re-download it; here’s exactly how to do that and how to prevent it.

What Causes the “File Has Been Moved” Error

IDM records the location of every file it downloads in its database. When you open a download from IDM’s window, it checks that recorded path. If the file isn’t there, IDM shows “File has been moved or renamed” (or similar wording). This happens for a handful of common reasons:

  • You moved the file to another folder after the download finished.
  • You renamed the file, and IDM still looks for the old name.
  • You deleted the file but haven’t cleared the download entry.
  • An external drive or network share was disconnected, so the path is temporarily unavailable.
  • Antivirus or cleanup software quarantined or removed the file.

The error is not a sign of corruption or a virus—it’s just IDM’s database pointing to a path that no longer matches reality.

How to Fix It When You Know Where the File Is

If you moved or renamed the file yourself, the quickest fix is to point IDM to the new location:

  1. Open IDM’s main window (double-click the IDM icon in the system tray).
  2. Find the download entry that shows the error. It will have a yellow warning icon or a message in the “Status” column.
  3. Right-click that entry and choose Open Destination Folder. If the file is not there, IDM will open the folder anyway.
  4. If the file is in a different folder, right-click the entry, select Properties, and look for the “File location” or “Path” field. Click Browse and navigate to the file’s new home.
  5. Click OK and then double-click the entry again. IDM should now open the file correctly.

If you renamed the file, use the same Properties dialog to update the file name. IDM doesn’t auto-detect renames, so you have to tell it.

What to Do If the File Is Gone

If you deleted the file or it was removed by another program, you cannot fix the entry—you need to recover the file itself. Options, in order of likelihood:

  • Re-download it. Right-click the entry in IDM and choose Download Again. IDM will start a fresh download to the same folder.
  • Check your Recycle Bin. If you deleted it manually, restore it from there, then update the path in IDM as above.
  • Use file recovery software. If the file was on a hard drive and overwritten, recovery tools might find it, but success is not guaranteed. This is a last resort.
  • Check cloud or backup. If you sync folders, the file may still be in your cloud trash or backup history.

Once the file is restored or re-downloaded, clear the old error entry by right-clicking and choosing Remove from list if you don’t need it.

How to Prevent the Error in the Future

The error is almost always caused by moving or renaming files after IDM has recorded them. A few habits eliminate it:

  • Move files within IDM. Instead of moving the file in Explorer, right-click the download entry and choose Move to or Change folder. IDM updates its database automatically.
  • Rename via IDM. Right-click the entry, select Rename, and type the new name. IDM updates the record.
  • Set a fixed download folder. In IDM’s Options > Save To, choose a permanent folder and stick to it. If you must organize, do it after the download is complete and use IDM’s move feature.
  • Don’t use cleanup tools that delete “temporary” files. Some cleaners mistake large downloaded files for temp files. Exclude your download folder in those tools.

Why IDM Doesn’t Automatically Find Moved Files

IDM is a download manager, not a file indexer. It doesn’t scan your whole drive every time you click an entry—that would be slow and unnecessary. Instead, it stores the exact path and checks it on demand. When the path fails, it shows the error. Some download managers (like browser built-in ones) don’t track files at all, so they never show this error—but they also can’t resume interrupted downloads or manage files in a central list. IDM’s trade-off is accuracy over convenience.

There is no “auto-locate” feature in IDM that searches for the file by name across all drives. If you want that, you’d have to manually search and update the path each time.

Common Misconceptions About the Error

“My file is corrupted.” The error has nothing to do with file integrity. A moved file is still perfectly usable; IDM just can’t find it.

“IDM is broken.” The software is working as designed. The error is a database mismatch, not a bug.

“I need to reinstall IDM.” Reinstalling won’t help because the problem is in your file system, not the program. In fact, reinstalling might clear your download history, which is unnecessary.

“The file is on a different drive, so IDM can’t open it.” IDM can open files on any drive, including external and network drives, as long as the path is correct. The error only appears when the path is wrong or the drive is offline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fix the error without opening IDM?

No. You need to update the entry in IDM’s list. There is no external tool that edits IDM’s database safely. Opening IDM and using the Properties dialog is the only supported method.

What if IDM says the file is moved but I never moved it?

Check if the file is still in the original folder. If it is, the path might be wrong because the drive letter changed (e.g., a USB drive was assigned a new letter). Update the path in Properties. If the file is missing, check antivirus quarantine or cloud sync trash.

Does the error affect my ability to resume downloads?

No. The error only affects opening a completed download. Active or paused downloads have their own status and are not affected by this error.

Can I clear the error entry without fixing it?

Yes. Right-click the entry and choose Remove from list. This deletes the record but not the file (if it exists). You can also select multiple entries and remove them at once.

Will updating IDM fix the error?

No. The error is not caused by an IDM bug. Updating won’t change how it tracks file paths. However, if you have an old version, updating might add new features, but it won’t solve this specific issue.

Is there a way to make IDM always ask for the location?

No. IDM doesn’t have a setting that prompts you for a new path when a file is missing. You have to manually update it each time.
