Meta Quest 3S Storage: How Much Do You Need?

The Meta Quest 3S comes in two storage options: 128GB and 256GB. For most people, the 128GB model is enough, but if you plan to install many large games, download movies, or record lots of gameplay, the 256GB version is worth the extra cost. This article explains what affects storage usage, how to check your current usage, and how to choose the right size for your habits.

Formula

The calculator above is a simple pace calculator, not a storage calculator. It computes your average pace (minutes per kilometer) and speed (kilometers per hour) from a finish time and distance. The formula for pace is:

Pace = Finish Time (minutes) ÷ Distance (km)

Speed = Distance (km) ÷ (Finish Time (minutes) ÷ 60). Variables: t = finish time in minutes, d = distance in kilometers. Pace is in min/km, speed in km/h.

Worked Example

Using the default values: t = 50 minutes, d = 10 km. Pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.0 min/km. Speed = 10 ÷ (50/60) = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.0 km/h. The calculator shows 5.00 min/km and 12.00 km/h.

Why Storage Matters on the Quest 3S

The Quest 3S is a standalone VR headset, meaning all games and apps are stored on the device itself. Unlike PC VR headsets that rely on a computer’s hard drive, the Quest 3S has fixed internal storage that you cannot expand with an SD card. Once it’s full, you must delete something to make room. The two models—128GB and 256GB—differ only in storage; all other specs (display, processor, battery) are identical.

How Much Space Do Games and Apps Actually Take?

Game sizes vary widely. Small indie games and utility apps can be under 500MB, while major AAA titles often exceed 10GB. For example, Beat Saber is around 1.5GB, Population: One is about 5GB, and Asgard’s Wrath 2 is roughly 30GB. Some of the largest games, like Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, can exceed 40GB. If you plan to own several big titles, storage fills quickly.

Other Things That Eat Storage

  • Game updates and DLC: Many games receive frequent patches that add new content and increase file size.
  • Recorded gameplay: The Quest 3S can capture video and screenshots. A 5-minute 1080p clip can be around 300MB; longer or higher-resolution clips take more.
  • Media files: You can download movies and 360° videos for offline viewing. A 2-hour movie in VR quality can be several gigabytes.
  • System software: The operating system and pre-installed apps take up about 20-30GB, so the usable space is less than the advertised capacity.

How to Check Your Storage Usage

To see how much space you have left, put on the headset and go to Settings > Storage. This shows a bar of used and free space, and you can tap on each category (apps, media, system) to see details. To free up space, go to Settings > Storage and select an app to uninstall, or use the Library to delete screenshots and recordings.

Which Model Should You Buy?

Choose the 128GB model if you are a casual user who plays a few games at a time and is okay with uninstalling and reinstalling games when needed. Choose the 256GB model if you are a heavy user who wants to keep many large games installed, records a lot of gameplay, or downloads media for offline use. The price difference is usually around $100, so consider whether that cost is worth the convenience of not managing storage frequently.

Common Misconceptions

One common myth is that you can connect an external hard drive via USB-C to expand storage. While the Quest 3S has a USB-C port, it is not designed for external storage; it is for charging and connecting to a PC. Another misconception is that cloud storage can save your games. Cloud saves only store your progress, not the game files themselves—you still need to download the game to play it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upgrade the storage later?

No. The storage is soldered onto the motherboard and cannot be upgraded. You must choose the right size at purchase.

How many games can I fit on the 128GB model?

It depends on game sizes. If you have a mix of small and large games, you might fit 10-20 games. If you mostly play large AAA titles, you might only fit 3-5.

Does the 256GB model have better performance?

No. Both models have the same processor, RAM, and display. The only difference is storage capacity.

Can I use a USB drive to store games?

No. The Quest 3S does not support external storage for games. You can use a USB-C drive to transfer files to a PC, but you cannot play games directly from it.

How much space does the system take up?

The system software and pre-installed apps typically use about 20-30GB. So a 128GB headset has roughly 100GB usable for your content.

Is 128GB enough for most people?

Yes, for casual users who play a few games at a time and are willing to delete and reinstall games, 128GB is sufficient. Heavy users who want many large games installed should opt for 256GB.
