Halloween Game: How the Lights Out Michael Myers Build Works

In Halloween (the 2018 video game and its sequels), the Lights Out Michael Myers build is a perk and add-on loadout that makes Myers nearly invisible in the dark, turning him into a true stalker. You equip the Scratched Mirror add-on with Boyfriend’s Memo and Judith’s Journal, and pair them with perks like Monitor & Abuse, Play with Your Food, and Dying Light to maximize stealth and map pressure. This build works by removing Myers’ Terror Radius entirely while in Tier I, allowing him to approach survivors undetected and down them before they realize he’s there.

How the Build Works

The core of the Lights Out build is the Scratched Mirror add-on, which removes Myers’ ability to tier up. You stay in Tier I for the entire match. In Tier I, Myers has a tiny Terror Radius (6 meters) and a short lunge, but he can see survivors through walls within a certain range (about 32 meters) when not in a chase. This wallhack ability is the real power. You know exactly where survivors are, and they have no warning you’re coming.

To make it truly “lights out,” you add Boyfriend’s Memo, which increases your lunge range while in Tier I, and Judith’s Journal, which reduces the cooldown of your Evil Within ability (though you won’t use it). The perks you choose fill in the gaps: Monitor & Abuse kills the last bit of Terror Radius, Play with Your Food gives you a 45% movement speed boost after losing a chase (which you can trigger by staring at a survivor and walking away), and Dying Light makes survivors repair slower after you hook the obsession. Some players swap Dying Light for Hex: Ruin or Corrupt Intervention to slow generators early.

Choosing the Right Add-ons and Perks

The add-ons are non-negotiable: you need Scratched Mirror to stay in Tier I and see through walls. The second add-on is flexible. Boyfriend’s Memo is common because it improves your lunge, but you can also use Hair Brush to increase your movement speed while stalking, or Vanity Mirror (though that gives a Terror Radius penalty, which hurts the build). For perks, the core is Monitor & Abuse and Play with Your Food. The third and fourth perks are up to you:

  • Dying Light – slows gen repair, but requires you to hook the obsession first.
  • Hex: Ruin – passive gen regression, but it can be cleansed.
  • Corrupt Intervention – blocks the three farthest generators for 80 seconds, giving you time to find survivors.
  • Bamboozle – blocks windows after vaulting, preventing loops.
  • Sloppy Butcher – makes healing slower, increasing pressure.

For add-ons, avoid anything that increases your Terror Radius or lets you tier up. The whole point is to stay in Tier I.

Common Problems and How to Fix Them

The biggest issue with this build is that you’re slow. In Tier I, your movement speed is 105% (same as survivors), so you can’t catch anyone in a straight line. You have to rely on stealth and mind games. If survivors are holding W (running away), you’ll lose them. To counter this, use Play with Your Food to get speed boosts. Stare at a survivor until they notice you, then break line of sight and walk away. The perk stacks up to 3 tokens, each giving 5% speed, so you can reach 115% movement speed.

Another problem is that survivors can hear your breathing. Even with a 0 Terror Radius, your heavy breathing is audible within a few meters. Use this to your advantage by approaching from unexpected angles. Also, be aware that survivors can still see you if they’re looking directly at you, so break line of sight with walls and objects. If you’re on an open map like the Cornfield, this build is much weaker; try to play on indoor maps like Lery’s Memorial Institute or The Game.

Comparing to Other Myers Builds

The standard Myers build uses the Judith’s Tombstone add-on to instantly kill survivors when you reach Tier III. That build is about power and fear, but it requires you to stalk a lot and exposes you with a 32-meter Terror Radius. The Lights Out build is the opposite: you sacrifice power for stealth. Another popular build is the Infinite Tier III build using Dead Rabbit and Fragrant Tuft of Hair, which lets you stay in Tier III forever, but again, you lose stealth. The Lights Out build is unique because it turns the game into a horror movie—survivors never know where you are, and they’re constantly paranoid. It’s less about raw strength and more about psychological pressure.

Costs and Unlocks

To use this build, you need to unlock the perks. Monitor & Abuse is a Doctor teachable (unlock at level 40), Play with Your Food is a Myers teachable (level 40), and Dying Light is also a Myers teachable (level 40). If you don’t have these perks, you can use the Shrine of Secrets to buy them for Iridescent Shards, or level up the respective killers. The Scratched Mirror add-on is a common (green) add-on for Myers, so it drops frequently in the Bloodweb. Boyfriend’s Memo is also green, and Judith’s Journal is purple. You’ll need to spend Bloodpoints to unlock them, but they’re not rare. Overall, the build costs nothing extra—just time to level up Myers and The Doctor.

Safety and Fair Play

This build is completely legal in Dead by Daylight. It doesn’t use any exploits or glitches. However, it can feel frustrating for survivors because they have no warning before you attack. Some players consider it “cheesy,” but it’s a legitimate strategy. To be a good sport, avoid camping hooks or tunneling one survivor. The build is most fun when you use it to scare survivors and create memorable moments, not to ruin someone’s game. Also, be aware that the game’s matchmaking may put you against experienced survivors who know how to counter stealth builds—they’ll stick together and do generators efficiently, so you need to be proactive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Scratched Mirror work on all maps? No. It only shows survivors through walls within 32 meters, but on indoor maps with many walls, it’s extremely powerful. On outdoor maps with few walls, the wallhack is less useful because you can see survivors anyway. It’s best on Lery’s Memorial Institute, The Game, and Hawkins National Laboratory.

Can survivors hear my Terror Radius with this build? No. With Monitor & Abuse, your effective Terror Radius is 0 meters, so survivors get no heartbeat warning. However, they can still hear your breathing and your footsteps, so you’re not completely silent.

Why do I keep losing chases? Because your lunge is short and your movement speed is the same as survivors. To win chases, use the element of surprise. Hit survivors from behind or from around a corner. If they start running, break line of sight and use Play with Your Food to catch up.

Is this build good for ranking up? It can be, but it’s inconsistent. You’ll get a lot of 4Ks on indoor maps, but on open maps, survivors can loop you easily. If you want a reliable build for ranking, use the Tombstone build instead.

Can I use this build with other killers? No, the Scratched Mirror is exclusive to Myers. However, other killers have similar stealth builds, like Ghostface with his power or Wraith with the “All Seeing” add-ons.

What’s the best way to use Play with Your Food? Stare at a survivor from a distance until the perk activates (you’ll see a token icon), then break line of sight and walk away. Repeat this two more times to get three tokens. Then use the speed boost to catch survivors off guard.
