DepEd Grade Calculator: How to Compute

The DepEd grade calculator computes a learner’s final rating for a subject using the Department of Education (Philippines) standard formula: 60% of the Written Work and Performance Tasks plus 40% of the Quarterly Assessment. You enter the raw scores for each component, and the calculator returns the transmuted grade on the 60–100 scale used in K to 12 basic education.

Formula

The DepEd order (No. 8, s. 2015) defines the grade for each quarter as:

Quarterly Grade = 30% Written Work + 50% Performance Tasks + 20% Quarterly Assessment

Where:

  • Written Work (WW) – quizzes, long tests, essays, and other written outputs (percentage varies by subject; 30% is typical for most subjects).
  • Performance Tasks (PT) – projects, presentations, and other performance-based assessments (50% for most subjects).
  • Quarterly Assessment (QA) – the periodical exam or summative test (20% for most subjects).

All scores are expressed as percentages (0–100). The result is a raw grade between 60 and 100. The DepEd transmutation table converts raw grades to the final 60–100 scale, but the table is linear: Transmuted = 60 + (Raw – 60) for raw scores above 60. In practice, raw scores below 60 are transmuted to 60 (the minimum passing grade).

Worked Example

Using the default values from the calculator:

  • Written Work = 85%
  • Performance Task = 88%
  • Quarterly Assessment = 90%

Step 1: Multiply each component by its weight:

  • WW: 85 × 0.30 = 25.5
  • PT: 88 × 0.50 = 44.0
  • QA: 90 × 0.20 = 18.0

Step 2: Add the weighted scores: 25.5 + 44.0 + 18.0 = 87.5

Step 3: Transmute (if raw ≥ 60): 60 + (87.5 – 60) = 87.5 → rounded to 88 (DepEd rounds to the nearest whole number).

The calculator shows 87.5 as the raw grade and 88 as the transmuted grade, matching the manual calculation.

How DepEd Grading Works

The K to 12 curriculum uses a standards-based grading system. Each subject has specific weights for Written Work, Performance Tasks, and Quarterly Assessment. For example, in Languages (English, Filipino), the weights are 30% WW, 50% PT, 20% QA. In Science and Math, the same weights apply. In MAPEH (Music, Arts, PE, Health), the weights are 20% WW, 60% PT, 20% QA. The calculator above uses the most common distribution (30-50-20), but you can adjust the weights manually if your subject differs.

At the end of the school year, the Final Grade is the average of the four quarterly grades. To pass, a learner must obtain a final grade of at least 75. Grades below 75 are considered “Did Not Meet Expectations.

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Enter the percentage score for Written Work (e.g., 85 for 85%).
  2. Enter the percentage score for Performance Tasks.
  3. Enter the percentage score for Quarterly Assessment.
  4. Click “Calculate to see the raw and transmuted grades.

The calculator assumes all scores are already in percentage form. If you have raw scores (e.g., 18 out of 20), convert them first: (score / total) × 100.

Common Mistakes and Misconceptions

  • Using raw scores instead of percentages – Always convert to a 0–100 scale before applying weights.
  • Misunderstanding the transmutation – The transmutation table is not a curve; it simply maps the raw grade to the 60–100 scale. For raw grades above 60, the mapping is identity (raw = transmuted). For raw grades below 60, the transmuted grade is 60.
  • Assuming all subjects have the same weights – Some subjects (e.g., MAPEH) have different weight distributions. Check your subject’s curriculum guide.
  • Rounding too early – Round only the final transmuted grade, not intermediate steps.

Limitations of the Formula

The 30-50-20 formula is the standard for most academic subjects, but it is not universal. For example, in Kindergarten, grading is purely descriptive (no numeric grades). In Senior High School, some specialized subjects (e.g., work immersion) have different assessment requirements. The calculator is a tool for the common case; always consult your teacher or the DepEd Order for your specific subject.

Also, the transmutation step is simplified. The official DepEd transmutation table has 40 intervals, but the linear formula (60 + (raw – 60)) gives the same result for raw scores ≥ 60. For raw scores below 60, the table assigns a transmuted grade of 60, which is the minimum passing grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the passing grade in DepEd?

The passing grade is 75. A final grade of 75 or above means the learner met the expectations. Grades below 75 are “Did Not Meet Expectations.

How do I convert raw scores to percentages?

Divide the raw score by the total possible score and multiply by 100. For example, 18 out of 20 is (18/20) × 100 = 90%.

What if my subject has different weights?

You can adjust the weights in the calculator. For MAPEH, use 20% WW, 60% PT, 20% QA. For other subjects, check the DepEd Order or your teacher.

Is the transmuted grade the same as the raw grade?

For raw grades above 60, yes. The transmutation table is linear, so the transmuted grade equals the raw grade. For raw grades below 60, the transmuted grade is set to 60.

How is the final grade computed at the end of the year?

The final grade is the average of the four quarterly grades. For example, if quarterly grades are 80, 85, 90, and 95, the final grade is (80+85+90+95)/4 = 87.5, rounded to 88.

Can I use this calculator for Senior High School?

Yes, for most academic subjects. Some specialized subjects (e.g., work immersion) have different assessment requirements, so check your curriculum guide.
