GPA Calculator Dallas College: How to Use
The calculator for this page is switched off while it is checked. The formula is below, and the worked example in the article shows how to use it by hand.
This GPA calculator for Dallas College works out your grade point average from your course credits and letter grades. You enter each course’s credit hours and your grade, and it returns your semester GPA and cumulative GPA. The calculator uses the standard 4.0 scale with the same grade point values Dallas College lists in its catalog.
Formula
GPA is calculated by dividing the total grade points earned by the total credit hours attempted. For each course, multiply the grade point value (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0) by the number of credit hours for that course. Sum those products across all courses, then divide by the sum of all credit hours.
GPA = (Σ (grade points × credit hours)) / (Σ credit hours)
Where:
- Grade points – numeric value assigned to each letter grade (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0)
- Credit hours – number of semester credit hours for the course (usually 3 for a standard course)
- Σ – sum across all courses in the term or across your entire transcript
Worked Example
Using the default values from the calculator above:
- Course 1: 3 credits, grade A (4 points)
- Course 2: 3 credits, grade B (3 points)
- Course 3: 3 credits, grade C (2 points)
- Course 4: 3 credits, grade D (1 point)
Step 1: Compute grade points for each course:
- Course 1: 4 × 3 = 12
- Course 2: 3 × 3 = 9
- Course 3: 2 × 3 = 6
- Course 4: 1 × 3 = 3
Step 2: Total grade points = 12 + 9 + 6 + 3 = 30
Step 3: Total credits = 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12
Step 4: GPA = 30 / 12 = 2.50
The calculator returns 2.50, matching the manual calculation.
How Dallas College GPA Works
Dallas College (formerly Dallas County Community College District) uses a standard 4.0 scale for most courses. Each letter grade corresponds to a fixed point value: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0. Some courses, such as developmental education or certain continuing education classes, may not count toward your GPA or may use a different scale (like Pass/No Pass). Always check your specific program requirements.
Your GPA is calculated only from courses that carry academic credit and receive a letter grade. Withdrawals (W), incompletes (I), and audits (AU) typically do not affect your GPA. However, repeated courses may have special rules—Dallas College generally replaces the previous grade when you repeat a course, but only the most recent attempt counts in your GPA. Check the current catalog for the exact repeat policy.
How to Use the Calculator Effectively
To get a realistic estimate, you need accurate credit hours and grades. Here are steps:
- List all your courses for the term (or all courses you’ve taken).
- Note the credit hours for each course (usually 3, but labs may be 1, and some courses are 4).
- Enter the grade you received or expect to receive (A, B, C, D, F).
- Click calculate to see your GPA.
If you want to project a future GPA, enter your current GPA and total credits separately, then add hypothetical grades for upcoming courses. The calculator above only handles a single term; for cumulative GPA, you’d need to combine your existing total grade points and credits with new ones.
Common Mistakes and Misconceptions
One frequent error is mixing up credit hours with course numbers. A 3-credit course is not the same as a course that meets 3 hours per week—some labs meet more but carry fewer credits. Always use the credit hours shown on your transcript or course schedule.
Another misconception is that a
