Gallons Calculator Tank: How to Measure

This calculator works out the volume of a rectangular, square, or cylindrical tank in US gallons. You enter the tank’s dimensions (length, width, and height for a rectangle; diameter and height for a cylinder), and it returns the total capacity in gallons, along with the volume in cubic feet or liters. It is useful for fish tanks, fuel storage, water tanks, and any container where you need to know how much liquid it can hold.

Formula

The volume of a rectangular tank is calculated by multiplying its three internal dimensions:

V = L × W × H

  • V = volume in cubic inches (in³)
  • L = internal length (in)
  • W = internal width (in)
  • H = internal height (in)

To convert cubic inches to US gallons, divide by 231 (since 1 US gallon = 231 in³). For liters, multiply cubic inches by 0.0163871 (1 in³ = 0.0163871 L). For cubic feet, divide by 1728 (1 ft³ = 1728 in³).

Worked Example

Using the default values: length = 48 in, width = 12 in, height = 20 in.

  1. Compute volume in cubic inches: 48 × 12 × 20 = 11,520 in³
  2. Convert to US gallons: 11,520 ÷ 231 = 49.87 gallons
  3. Convert to liters: 11,520 × 0.0163871 = 188.8 L
  4. Convert to cubic feet: 11,520 ÷ 1728 = 6.67 ft³

The calculator shows 49.87 gallons, 188.8 liters, and 6.67 cubic feet. Note that this is the total volume of the tank if filled to the brim; the actual usable volume is less because you never fill a tank completely.

Why Tank Volume Matters

Knowing the exact capacity of a tank is critical in many situations. For aquariums, it determines how many fish you can keep (a common rule is 1 inch of fish per gallon, but this varies by species and filtration). For fuel or water storage, it tells you how long a supply will last. For chemical mixing, it prevents overfilling or underdosing. Even for shipping, volume affects weight and cost. A gallon calculator removes guesswork and helps you plan accurately.

How to Measure a Tank Correctly

To get an accurate result, measure the internal dimensions, not the outside. Tank walls have thickness, and subtracting that makes a real difference on large tanks. Use a tape measure that reads in inches or centimeters, and measure from the inside edge to the opposite inside edge. For a cylinder, measure the diameter (the widest point across the circular opening) and the height from the bottom to the top rim. If the tank has a rounded bottom or sloped sides, the rectangular formula will overestimate; you may need a more complex shape or a water-displacement test.

Common Mistakes and Misconceptions

One frequent error is mixing units. If you measure in feet, you must convert to inches before using the 231 factor, or use a different conversion (1 ft³ = 7.48 gallons). Another mistake is using outside dimensions, which overestimates capacity. A third is confusing US gallons with UK (imperial) gallons: 1 UK gallon = 1.20095 US gallons. Also, many people forget that the “height for a fish tank is not the water depth; you should measure the actual water level if you want to know how much water is in it, not the tank’s total height.

Rectangular vs. Cylindrical Tanks

The formula above works for rectangular and square tanks. For cylindrical tanks, the volume is π × r² × h, where r is the radius (half the diameter) and h is the height. The calculator on this page is designed for rectangular tanks; if you have a cylinder, you can still use it by entering the diameter as length and width (since π × r² ≈ 0.785 × d², not d², so that would be inaccurate). Better to use a dedicated cylinder calculator. For spherical tanks, the formula is (4/3)πr³. Choose the right shape for your tank to avoid errors.

Safety and Practical Limits

Never fill a tank to the absolute brim unless it is designed for that. Liquids expand with temperature, and most tanks need headspace. For aquariums, leave at least an inch of air at the top. For fuel tanks, follow the manufacturer’s fill level. Also, the weight of water is significant: 1 gallon of water weighs about 8.34 pounds (3.78 kg). A 50-gallon tank weighs over 400 pounds when full, so ensure your floor or stand can support it. Always check for leaks and use appropriate materials for the liquid stored.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many gallons is a 48x12x20 tank?

Using the formula, 48 × 12 × 20 = 11,520 cubic inches. Divide by 231 to get 49.87 US gallons. That is the total volume; actual water capacity is slightly less because you don’t fill to the rim.

How do I calculate gallons in a cylindrical tank?

Use the formula V = π × r² × h, where r is the radius (diameter/2) and h is the height, all in inches. Then divide by 231 to get US gallons. For example, a tank with a 12-inch diameter and 24-inch height: radius = 6, so V = 3.1416 × 36 × 24 = 2714.3 in³, which is 11.75 gallons.

What is the difference between US and UK gallons?

A US gallon is 231 cubic inches (about 3.785 liters). A UK (imperial) gallon is 277.42 cubic inches (about 4.546 liters). So 1 UK gallon is about 1.2 US gallons. Always check which unit your tank or liquid uses.

Can I calculate gallons from liters?

Yes. 1 US gallon = 3.78541 liters. To convert liters to gallons, divide by 3.78541. For example, 100 liters ÷ 3.78541 = 26.42 gallons. Our calculator also shows liters for convenience.

Why does my tank’s label say a different volume than my measurement?

Manufacturers often list nominal capacity based on outside dimensions or include the volume of the lid and fittings. Also, some tanks have sloped or curved sides that reduce actual volume. Always measure the inside dimensions for a true capacity.

Does water weight matter for tank placement?

Absolutely. Water weighs about 8.34 pounds per gallon at room temperature. A 50-gallon tank weighs over 400 pounds, plus the tank itself and substrate. Ensure your floor can handle the load, especially on upper floors. Use a stand rated for the weight.
