Free Online Texting Tools: What They Are & How to Use

Free online texting tools let you send SMS messages from a web browser without using your phone’s cellular plan, often at no cost. You enter a phone number, type your message, and the service delivers it as a standard text message to the recipient’s mobile device. These tools range from simple web-based SMS senders to full messaging platforms with group chat and file sharing, and they work on any device with an internet connection.

Formula

This calculator works out your average pace and speed from a finish time and distance. The formulas are:

  • Pace = Finish time (minutes) ÷ Distance (km) → result in minutes per kilometer
  • Speed = Distance (km) ÷ (Finish time (minutes) ÷ 60) → result in kilometers per hour

Where:

  • t = finish time in minutes (e.g., 50 minutes)
  • d = distance in kilometers (e.g., 10 km)

If you measure distance in miles, convert to km by multiplying by 1.60934 before using the formula, or use the pace result in min/km and multiply by 1.60934 to get min/mile.

Worked Example

Using the default values from the calculator: t = 50 minutes, d = 10 km.

  1. Pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.00 min/km
  2. Speed = 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.00 km/h

The calculator shows an average pace of 5.00 min/km and an average speed of 12.00 km/h.

When to Use This Calculator

Use this tool when you have completed a run, cycle, or walk and want to know your average pace or speed. It is especially useful for training plans that prescribe paces (e.g., “run 10 km at 5:30 min/km) or for comparing performance across different distances. You can also enter a target pace and work backward to estimate a finish time, though this calculator only gives pace and speed from time and distance.

For example, if you ran a half marathon (21.1 km) in 1 hour 45 minutes (105 minutes), enter t=105 and d=21.1 to get a pace of 4.98 min/km and speed of 12.05 km/h.

How to Read the Results

The pace result (min/km) tells you how many minutes it takes to cover one kilometer. Lower values mean faster running. The speed result (km/h) tells you how many kilometers you cover in one hour; higher values mean faster movement. Both are averages over the whole distance, not your instantaneous pace at any moment.

If you run on a treadmill or track, the distance may be slightly different from GPS, so the result is only as accurate as your distance measurement.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Mixing units: If you enter distance in miles but time in minutes, the pace will be in min/mile, but the calculator assumes km. Convert miles to km first (1 mile = 1.60934 km).
  • Using seconds in time: Enter time in minutes only. For 1:45:30, convert to 105.5 minutes (1 hour = 60 min, 30 sec = 0.5 min).
  • Rounding too early: Keep extra decimal places during the calculation to avoid rounding errors in the final pace.

Limits of the Formula

This formula assumes a constant speed over the entire distance. Real-world runs include hills, stops, and varying effort, so the average pace might not reflect how you felt. It also doesn’t account for elevation gain, wind, or surface type. For accurate training zones, consider using a heart rate monitor alongside pace.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use this for walking or cycling? Yes, the formula works for any distance and time. For cycling, you might prefer speed in mph; convert km/h to mph by dividing by 1.60934.

What is a good pace for a 10k? For recreational runners, a 10k pace of 6:00–7:00 min/km is common. Elite runners may be under 3:30 min/km. Use the calculator to find your own baseline.

How do I convert min/km to min/mile? Multiply the pace in min/km by 1.60934. For example, 5:00 min/km × 1.60934 = 8:02 min/mile.

Why is my GPS distance different from the race course? GPS can have errors due to buildings, trees, or sharp turns. Race courses are measured along the shortest possible path, so your GPS may show slightly more distance.

What if I enter time in hours and minutes? Convert everything to minutes first. For 1 hour 20 minutes, enter 80 minutes.
