Roofing Footage Calculator: Squares & Shingles

This roofing footage calculator works out the total surface area of a roof in square feet (or meters) based on the building footprint and roof pitch, then converts it to roofing squares — the unit contractors use for estimating materials. You enter the ground dimensions of the roof footprint, the roof pitch (rise per 12 inches of run), and an overhang amount, and you get back the actual sloped surface area, the number of roofing squares, and an approximate shingle bundle count. The result is the key number for ordering shingles, underlayment, and other roofing materials.

Formula

The calculator uses the standard roofing math that treats a pitched roof as a flat plane tilted at the roof’s angle. The formula is:

Roof Area = (Length + 2 × Overhang) × (Width + 2 × Overhang) × √(1 + (Pitch / 12)²)

Where:

  • Length – building length in feet (or meters), measured at the eaves.
  • Width – building width in feet (or meters), measured at the gable ends.
  • Overhang – how far the roof extends past the walls, in the same unit.
  • Pitch – the roof rise in inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run (e.g., 6 means a 6/12 pitch).
  • √(1 + (Pitch/12)²) – the slope factor that converts flat footprint area to the actual sloped surface.

The result is in square feet. One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface — that is the industry standard unit for estimating shingles, felt, and labor.

Worked Example

Using the default values from the calculator above: a building 40 ft long by 30 ft wide, a 6/12 pitch, and a 1 ft overhang on all sides.

  1. Add overhang to each dimension: 40 + 2×1 = 42 ft; 30 + 2×1 = 32 ft.
  2. Flat footprint area: 42 × 32 = 1,344 sq ft.
  3. Slope factor for 6/12 pitch: √(1 + (6/12)²) = √(1 + 0.25) = √1.25 ≈ 1.1180.
  4. Sloped roof area: 1,344 × 1.1180 ≈ 1,502.6 sq ft.
  5. Roofing squares: 1,502.6 ÷ 100 ≈ 15.0 squares.
  6. Shingle bundles (3-tab, which covers 33.3 sq ft per bundle): 1,502.6 ÷ 33.3 ≈ 45 bundles.

The calculator rounds the area to the nearest square foot (1,503 sq ft), squares to one decimal (15.0), and bundles to the nearest whole number (45).

Why Roofing Uses “Squares Instead of Square Feet

Roofing contractors almost never talk in square feet — they talk in “squares because that is how shingles are packaged and priced. One square covers 100 square feet of roof surface. A typical 3-tab asphalt shingle bundle covers about 33.3 square feet, so three bundles make one square. Architectural (dimensional) shingles often cover slightly less, so always check the bundle label. Using squares simplifies estimating: a 15-square roof needs 45 bundles of 3-tab shingles, plus underlayment, nails, and flashing.

How to Measure Your Roof for This Calculator

You do not need to climb onto the roof if you can safely measure the ground footprint. Here is the practical process:

  • Measure the length and width of the house at the eaves (the edge of the roof) using a tape measure or a laser distance meter.
  • Add the overhang on each side — typically 1 to 2 feet, but measure it if you can.
  • Determine the roof pitch. You can use a pitch gauge, a smartphone app with a level, or measure it from inside the attic: for every 12 inches of horizontal run, measure the vertical rise.
  • If the roof has multiple sections (e.g., a main roof and a porch roof), measure each section separately and add the areas together.
  • For hips, valleys, and dormers, the simple rectangle formula underestimates the true area — you will need to add extra for waste (see below).

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

The most frequent error is mixing up the pitch ratio. A 6/12 pitch means 6 inches of rise per 12 inches of run — not 6 degrees. The slope factor for 6/12 is about 1.118, while a 30-degree roof (about 7/12 pitch) has a factor of 1.155. Using the wrong value changes your area by several percent.

Another mistake is forgetting the overhang. A 1-foot overhang on a 40×30 house adds over 140 square feet of roof area — more than a full square. Also, do not confuse the building footprint with the roof footprint; the roof is always larger.

Finally, this calculator assumes a simple gable or shed roof (one flat plane). For hip roofs, the area is slightly larger because the hip cuts add triangular sections. For a hip roof, multiply the result by about 1.05 to 1.10, or measure each face separately.

How to Read the Results and Order Materials

The “roof surface area is the actual shingle-covered surface — this is what you compare to the coverage on the shingle bundle. The “roofing squares is that area divided by 100, which is the number you quote to suppliers. The “shingle bundles estimate assumes 3-tab shingles at 3 bundles per square; for architectural shingles, use 4 bundles per square because they are thicker and cover less.

Always add 10–15% waste for cutting, valleys, hips, and mistakes. For example, a 15-square roof should get 17 squares of shingles (51 bundles of 3-tab). Underlayment (felt or synthetic) is ordered in rolls that cover a certain square footage — typically 1 square per roll for #15 felt, so order the same number of rolls as squares, plus waste.

Limitations of This Calculator

This calculator works only for simple shed or gable roofs where the entire roof is a single rectangle tilted at one pitch. It does not account for:

  • Multiple roof sections with different pitches
  • Hip roofs, valleys, dormers, or skylights
  • Curved or complex architectural shapes
  • Roof pitch expressed as an angle (degrees) — you must convert to rise/12 first

For complex roofs, the best practice is to measure each planar face individually using a tape measure and a pitch gauge, then sum the areas. Many roofing supply companies offer free measuring services if you provide them with a plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bundles of shingles do I need for a 1,500 sq ft roof?

For a 1,500 sq ft roof (15 squares), you need 45 bundles of 3-tab asphalt shingles (3 bundles per square). With 10% waste, that becomes about 50 bundles. Architectural shingles typically need 4 bundles per square, so you would need 60 bundles before waste.

What is the difference between a roofing square and a square foot?

A roofing square is a unit equal to 100 square feet. It exists because shingles are sold in bundles that cover a third of a square, and because roofers quote prices per square. So a 2,000 sq ft roof is 20 squares.

How do I convert roof pitch from degrees to rise/12?

Use the tangent function: rise/12 = tan(angle in degrees) × 12. For example, a 30° roof has tan(30°) ≈ 0.577, so rise/12 = 0.577 × 12 ≈ 6.9, which is roughly a 7/12 pitch. You can also use an online converter.

Does this calculator work for metal roofs?

Yes, the surface area calculation is the same for any roofing material. However, metal panels are ordered in linear feet and have different waste factors (often 10–15% for standing seam, 5–10% for corrugated). Use the area result to estimate panel lengths and quantities.

Why is my roof area larger than the house footprint?

Two reasons: the overhang extends the roof beyond the walls, and the pitch makes the sloped surface longer than the flat projection. A 6/12 pitch adds about 11.8% to the area, and a 1-foot overhang on a 40×30 house adds about 4% more. Combined, the roof is roughly 16% larger than the footprint.

Should I include waste in the calculator result?

No — the calculator gives the net area. You should add 10–15% waste yourself when ordering materials. Waste covers cutoffs at hips and valleys, starter strips, ridge cap, and mistakes. For a 15-square roof, order 17 squares (or 51 bundles of 3-tab) to be safe.
