A food plot calculator estimates how much land a plot covers and, when you enter a seeding rate, how much seed to buy. Enter the plot’s length and width and the recommended seed rate; the calculator returns area in acres and hectares, plus the estimated seed quantity in pounds and kilograms.
Formula
For a rectangular plot, area in acres = length in feet × width in feet ÷ 43,560. One acre is 43,560 square feet. Estimated seed required in pounds = area in acres × the seeding rate in pounds per acre. To convert acres to hectares, multiply by 0.40468564224; to convert pounds to kilograms, multiply by 0.45359237.
- Length is the plot’s length in feet.
- Width is its width in feet.
- Rate is the seed label or planting-plan rate in pounds per acre.
- Area is the calculated plot size in acres; the calculator also converts it to hectares.
- Seed is the estimated seed amount in pounds; the calculator also converts it to kilograms.
Worked Example
Using the default entries—200 feet long, 100 feet wide, and 50 pounds of seed per acre:
- Area = 200 × 100 ÷ 43,560 = 0.459136… acres, displayed as 0.459 acres.
- Hectares = 0.459136… × 0.40468564224 = 0.1858… hectares, displayed as 0.186 ha.
- Seed = 0.459136… × 50 = 22.9568… pounds, displayed as 22.96 lb.
- Kilograms = 22.9568… × 0.45359237 = 10.411… kilograms, displayed as 10.41 kg.
The seed estimate uses the unrounded calculated area, not the rounded 0.459-acre display. That is why multiplying the displayed area by 50 may differ slightly from the displayed seed result.
How to Measure an Irregular Plot
The calculator assumes a rectangle. For a square or rectangular plot, measure both sides in feet and use the longest dimension as length. If the plot is not rectangular, divide it into simple shapes, calculate each area, and add the results. A triangle’s area is base × height ÷ 2 in square feet; convert that total to acres by dividing by 43,560.
For example, a plot shaped like an L can be treated as two non-overlapping rectangles. Measure each rectangle, calculate its acreage, and add the acres before estimating seed. Avoid counting the shared area twice. For a large or unusually shaped site, a map or GPS area measurement can help, but check that its units and boundary match the ground you intend to plant.
Choosing a Seeding Rate
The calculator does not determine the correct rate for a particular seed or site. Use the rate on the seed label or a reliable planting recommendation for the species, mixture, planting method, and intended coverage. Different seeds have different seed sizes and recommended rates, so a generic number can produce a poor estimate.
- Check whether the rate is stated per acre, per 1,000 square feet, or another area. Convert it before entering it: 1 acre equals 43,560 square feet.
- Check whether the stated rate is for drilled seed or broadcast seed. The appropriate rate may differ by planting method.
- For a blend, confirm whether the recommendation is for the whole mixture or for each component. Do not apply a full mixture rate separately to every seed unless the instructions say to.
- Consider the fraction of the measured area that will actually be planted. Exclude roads, bare ground, water, and other unplanted sections by measuring them separately and subtracting their area.
How to Use the Seed Estimate
Enter dimensions in feet and a rate in pounds per acre. The calculator reports the mathematical estimate, not a guaranteed bag quantity or an adjustment for seed quality, germination, spreading losses, or field conditions. If the estimate falls between package sizes, use the package information and planting guidance to decide how much to obtain; do not change the recommended rate simply to match a package.
A common misconception is that a larger seed amount automatically compensates for a plot that was measured inaccurately or for a rate intended for another planting method. First verify the boundary, units, and seed instructions. Rounding the area too early can also introduce error, particularly for small plots; use the full measurement for the calculation and round only the final amount to a practical purchasing quantity.
Common Measurement Problems and Limits
Keep all dimensions in the units expected by the formula. Entering measurements in yards as though they were feet makes the area too small by a factor of nine; entering metres as feet also gives an incorrect result. Convert metres to feet by multiplying by approximately 3.28084, or calculate the area in square metres and convert using 1 hectare = 10,000 square metres. The calculator’s inputs are feet, so convert before entry.
Slopes, curved boundaries, and uneven ground complicate measurement. A tape measurement across a steep slope represents the sloping surface distance, while a map may represent horizontal area. For ordinary planning, use a consistent method and define the actual planting boundary. The rectangle formula itself does not account for overlap, inaccessible patches, seed viability, or whether the planting rate is appropriate.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many acres is a 100-by-100-foot food plot?
A 100 × 100-foot rectangle is 10,000 square feet. Divide by 43,560 to get about 0.230 acres, or about 0.093 hectares.
How do I calculate seed for a food plot?
Calculate planted acres, then multiply by the recommended rate in pounds per acre. For example, 0.5 acre at 40 lb/acre requires 20 pounds before any practical rounding.
Does the calculator tell me what seed rate to use?
No. It multiplies the rate you provide by the measured area. Choose a rate from the seed label or a suitable planting recommendation for the species, mixture, and method.
Can I use it for a plot that is not rectangular?
Yes, if you divide the area into rectangles or triangles, calculate each piece, and add their areas. Enter the equivalent total dimensions only if the combined area is represented accurately; otherwise calculate seed from the total acreage separately.
Should I add extra seed for broadcasting?
Use the rate recommended for broadcasting rather than automatically adding an arbitrary amount. Rates can depend on seed type and planting conditions, so follow the applicable label or planting guidance.
