This calculator works out the percentage score you need on your final exam to reach a target overall grade. You enter your current grade, the weight of the final exam, and your desired final grade; it returns the exact percentage required on the final.
Formula
The calculator uses the standard weighted-average formula rearranged to solve for the final exam score:
Required Final Score = [Desired Grade − (Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight))] ÷ Final Weight
Where:
- Current Grade (t) – your average so far, as a percentage (0–100).
- Final Exam Weight (w) – the share of your total grade the final represents, as a percentage (0–100).
- Desired Grade (g) – the overall percentage you want at the end of the course.
- Required Final Score – the minimum percentage you must score on the final exam to hit that target.
The formula assumes the final exam is the only remaining graded component. If you have other pending assignments, quizzes, or projects, their weights must be combined with the final’s weight before using this calculator.
Worked Example
Using the default values from the calculator above:
- Current grade = 85%
- Final exam weight = 40%
- Desired final grade = 90%
Step 1: Convert the final weight to a decimal: 40% = 0.40.
Step 2: Compute the portion of the grade already determined: 1 − 0.40 = 0.60.
Step 3: Multiply current grade by that portion: 85 × 0.60 = 51.
Step 4: Subtract from desired grade: 90 − 51 = 39.
Step 5: Divide by the final weight: 39 ÷ 0.40 = 97.5.
So you need 97.5% on the final exam to end the course with a 90% overall. The calculator rounds to two decimals, giving 97.50%.
How to Use This Calculator
Enter three numbers:
- Current grade – check your school’s grade portal or ask your teacher. If you have multiple graded items, compute the weighted average of what you have so far.
- Final exam weight – this is usually in the course syllabus. It may be listed as a percentage (e.g., 30%) or as a fraction (e.g., 3/10).
- Desired final grade – the letter grade or percentage you are aiming for. Common targets: 90 for an A, 80 for a B, 70 for a C.
The result tells you the minimum score on the final exam. If the number is above 100, the target is mathematically impossible; if it is below 0, you have already secured the grade.
When to Use It
Use this calculator in the last few weeks of a term, once you know your current grade and the final’s weight. It answers questions like:
- “I have an 82, the final is worth 25%, can I still get an A?
- “What do I need to pass if I currently have a 68 and the final is 30%?
- “My teacher says the final is 20% – how much does that actually matter?
The same formula works for any single remaining assessment, not just a final exam – a project, a paper, or a cumulative test.
Common Mistakes and Misconceptions
A frequent error is treating the final weight as a decimal directly. For example, a 30% final should be entered as 30, not 0.30, because the formula divides by the weight after converting internally. Entering 0.30 would give a wildly inflated required score.
Another mistake is ignoring other remaining assignments. If you still have homework or a presentation due, those count toward your final grade too. This calculator assumes the final exam is the only thing left. If other items remain, add their weights to the final’s weight and use your projected grade for those items as the “current gradeâ€ – or use a more complete grade calculator that handles multiple components.
A common misconception is that a 100% on the final guarantees a perfect course grade. That is only true if the final is worth 100% of the grade. With a 40% final, scoring 100% raises your overall grade by only 40 points times the difference between your current grade and 100.
Limits of the Formula
The formula assumes a simple weighted average, which is the standard in most schools. However, some courses use curves, extra credit, or non-linear grading. If your teacher curves the final, the required raw percentage may differ from the curved percentage. Also, some schools use a 4.0 scale or letter grades with plus/minus; this calculator works in percentages, so convert letter grades to their percentage equivalents first (e.g., A = 90–100).
The result is a minimum target. Scoring exactly that percentage should give you the desired grade, but rounding in your school’s system might cause a slight difference. Aim slightly above the calculated number to be safe.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if the required percentage is over 100?
That means your desired grade is mathematically impossible given your current grade and the final’s weight. For example, with an 80% current grade and a 20% final, you can reach at most 80 × 0.8 + 100 × 0.2 = 84%. If you ask for 90%, the calculator returns 130%, which is unattainable.
What if the required percentage is negative?
A negative result means you have already secured the desired grade regardless of your final exam score. For instance, with a 95% current grade and a 30% final, even a 0% on the final leaves you with 95 × 0.7 = 66.5%, so any target below that is already met.
How do I convert a letter grade to a percentage?
Most schools use a 10-point scale: A = 90–100, B = 80–89, C = 70–79, etc. If your school uses plus/minus, the midpoints are common: A− = 90, B+ = 87, B = 83, B− = 80. Use the lowest percentage in the range if you want a conservative estimate.
Does this work for a midterm or a quiz?
Yes, as long as that assessment is the only remaining graded component and you know its weight. For multiple remaining items, combine their weights and use your projected average for those items as the “current grade in the formula.
Why does the final weight matter so much?
A heavier final gives you more leverage to change your grade. With a 10% final, a perfect score adds only 10 points to your overall grade; with a 50% final, it adds 50 points. The calculator shows exactly how much impact the final has on your target.
