The Fate/Grand Order damage calculator works out how much damage a Servant will deal in a single attack, card, or Noble Phantasm before enemy defense is applied. You enter the Servant’s stats, buffs, class, and card type, and it returns the raw damage number plus the NP gain and star generation for that hit. This lets you compare setups, check breakpoints, and plan farming or challenge quests without wasting AP on trial runs.
Formula
The basic damage formula in Fate/Grand Order is:
Damage = ATK × NP multiplier × Card multiplier × Class modifier × (1 + damage buffs)
Each variable is:
- ATK: the Servant’s attack stat after all Fou, level, and command code bonuses (no unit).
- NP multiplier: the percentage listed on the Noble Phantasm, e.g. 600% for a single-target Buster NP at overcharge 1.
- Card multiplier: Buster = 1.5, Arts = 1.0, Quick = 0.8. This already includes the first-card bonus for Buster and Arts chains.
- Class modifier: the standard 1.0 for most classes, 1.1 for Shielder, 1.05 for MoonCancer, etc. You can also apply the class advantage multiplier (2.0 for advantage, 0.5 for disadvantage) here.
- Damage buffs: the sum of all ATK up, card performance up, NP damage up, and special damage mods (e.g., against Servant) as a percentage. Add 100% to the base.
The result is the damage before enemy defense, random variance, and critical or overkill bonuses. It does not include the 0.9–1.1 random factor, so your actual in-game damage will vary by ±10%.
Worked Example
Using the default values from the calculator above:
- ATK = 12000
- NP multiplier = 600% (i.e., 6.0)
- Card type = Buster (1.5)
- Class modifier = 1.0
- Damage buffs = 50% (i.e., 1.5)
Plug into the formula:
Damage = 12000 × 6.0 × 1.5 × 1.0 × 1.5 = 162,000
The calculator shows 162000 as the headline result. This is the expected raw damage before enemy defense and random variation.
Why Use a Damage Calculator?
FGO has no training dummy, so the only way to test a damage setup is to spend AP on a real quest. A calculator lets you:
- Check if a Servant can one-shot a farming wave with a given NP level and buffs.
- Compare different Craft Essences (e.g., Black Grail vs. Kaleidoscope) for a specific fight.
- See how much damage a critical hit will do with a Buster chain.
- Plan for challenge quests where you need to hit a damage threshold to break a bar.
It also helps you understand the game’s damage formula, which is hidden in-game. The formula is the same one dataminers have used since the game’s launch, and it has not changed in the global version as of this writing.
How to Read the Result
The number you get is the pre-defense damage. Enemy defense is applied as a percentage reduction, so the actual hit will be lower. For example, if an enemy has 30% defense, the final damage is roughly 70% of the calculator’s number. Also, the random modifier (0.9 to 1.1) means the actual damage can be anywhere from 90% to 110% of the calculated value.
For NP damage, the result assumes the NP hits at overcharge 1. If you use a higher overcharge, multiply the NP multiplier accordingly. For example, a 600% NP at overcharge 2 might be 700%, so the damage would be 12000 × 7.0 × 1.5 × 1.0 × 1.5 = 189,000.
Critical hits double the damage (before defense) if the critical multiplier is 100%. Some Servants have higher or lower critical multipliers, so adjust if needed.
Common Mistakes and Misconceptions
One frequent error is forgetting to add the first-card bonus. When you lead a chain with a Buster card, all other cards get a 50% damage boost. The card multiplier in the formula already includes that bonus for the lead card, but if you are calculating a card that is not the first, you need to adjust. For a non-lead Buster card, the multiplier is 1.5, but if it’s the second card in a Buster chain, it becomes 1.5 × 1.5 (because the first card gives +50%). Many calculators have a checkbox for this.
Another mistake is mixing up ATK up and card performance up. They are separate buffs, but they multiply together. For example, a 30% ATK up and a 30% Buster up result in 1.3 × 1.3 = 1.69, not 1.6. The calculator above uses a single buff field, so you must combine them multiplicatively before entering. In practice, most damage calculators have separate fields for each buff type.
Also, the NP multiplier for a normal attack is 100%. If you use the calculator for a regular Buster card, set NP multiplier to 100%.
Limitations of the Formula
The formula does not include:
- Enemy defense and class resistance (you must apply those manually).
- Random variance (0.9–1.1).
- Overkill bonus (extra NP gauge and star generation, but no damage increase).
- Special damage mods that are conditional (e.g., “when enemy is an Archer”) – you need to add those to the buff field.
- Traits and attribute advantage (e.g., Man vs. Sky) – these are separate multipliers that should be included in the class modifier field.
For high-level content, these factors matter. For example, a Servant with a 1.1 attribute advantage will deal 10% more damage, so you should multiply the final result by 1.1.
Also, the formula assumes the Servant’s ATK is the base value shown in the profile. In-game, the ATK can be increased by Fous, command codes, and certain skills that add a flat ATK bonus (like “increase ATK by 500”). Those flat bonuses are added to the base ATK before the multiplier. Most calculators let you input the final ATK after all flat bonuses.
Alternatives to Manual Calculation
Several online tools exist, but they all use the same formula. The most popular one is the FGO Damage Calculator hosted by the Gamepress wiki, which has a full interface for selecting Servants, CEs, buffs, and enemy defense. Another is the FGO Simulator, which can simulate entire turns. However, for a quick check, a simple calculator like the one above works fine.
If you prefer to do it yourself, you can use a spreadsheet. The formula is simple enough that you can type it into any cell. The advantage of a spreadsheet is that you can compare multiple setups side by side.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between ATK up and NP damage up?
ATK up increases the base ATK stat before any multipliers. NP damage up is a separate multiplier that applies only to Noble Phantasm damage. Both are multiplicative with each other, so a 30% ATK up and a 30% NP damage up give a total of 1.3 × 1.3 = 1.69, which is 69% more damage, not 60%.
Does the calculator include the random damage variance?
No. The result is the median damage (the 1.0 random modifier). Actual damage can be 10% higher or lower. If you need to guarantee a one-shot, aim for a calculated value that is at least 10% above the enemy’s HP.
How do I account for class advantage?
Class advantage multiplies damage by 2.0 when you have the advantage and 0.5 when you don’t. You can add that to the class modifier field. For example, if your Servant is a Saber attacking an Archer, set the class modifier to 2.0. If the class is neutral, keep it at 1.0.
What is the first-card bonus?
When you lead a chain with a Buster card, all cards in that chain get a 50% damage boost. Leading with an Arts card gives a 100% NP gain boost to all cards, and leading with a Quick card gives a 20% star rate boost. The card multiplier in the formula already includes the Buster first-card bonus for the lead card. For other cards, you need to multiply their card multiplier by 1.5 if the chain starts with Buster.
Can I use this calculator for critical hits?
Yes, but you need to multiply the final damage by your critical multiplier. Most Servants have a base critical multiplier of 2.0 (200%), but some have higher or lower. Add that as a separate factor after the formula.
Does the NP multiplier change with overcharge?
Yes, the NP multiplier increases with overcharge level. The calculator uses the multiplier you enter, so you can change it to reflect the overcharge you plan to use. For example, a 600% NP at overcharge 1 becomes 700% at overcharge 2 for many Servants, but the exact values are listed in the game’s NP description.
