Epic Games Free Games List: Current & Past

The Epic Games Store gives away at least one free game every Thursday at 11:00 AM Eastern Time, and you keep each title forever once you claim it during its offer window. This article lists the current free games, explains how the weekly giveaway works, and covers the full history of past free titles so you know what to expect and how to claim them.

Formula

The average pace is the total time divided by the distance:

pace (min/km) = time (minutes) ÷ distance (km)

Average speed is distance divided by time converted to hours:

speed (km/h) = distance (km) ÷ (time (min) ÷ 60)

Variables: t = total time in minutes, d = distance in kilometers. Pace is shown in minutes per kilometer, speed in kilometers per hour.

Worked Example

Using the default values of 50 minutes and 10 km:

  1. Pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.00 min/km
  2. Speed = 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.00 km/h

So a 10 km run in 50 minutes gives an average pace of 5:00 per kilometer and an average speed of 12 km/h.

How the Weekly Free Game Program Works

Epic Games started its free game giveaway in December 2018, shortly after the Epic Games Store launched. Every Thursday at 11:00 AM Eastern Time, one or more games become available at no cost. You have exactly one week to claim them—the offer resets the following Thursday when new games appear. Once you click “Get and complete the checkout (it’s free, no payment required), the game is permanently added to your Epic Games library. You can download and play it anytime, even after the promotion ends.

During special events like the holiday season, Epic sometimes gives away multiple games per week or a new game daily for 15 days. The most notable is the annual Holiday Sale, which has featured daily free games since 2019. These are always full games, not demos or trial versions, and they include major AAA titles as well as indie gems.

Current Free Games (This Week)

The current free games change every Thursday. As of this writing, the free titles are:

  • Game A – a single-player action adventure
  • Game B – a co-op survival title

To see the exact current offers, visit the Epic Games Store homepage or the “Free Games tab. The store always displays the active free games with a countdown timer until the next rotation. If you miss a week, you cannot get that specific game for free later—each promotion is one-time only.

Full History of Past Free Games

Epic has given away over 200 games since the program began. Some notable past free titles include:

  • Grand Theft Auto V (May 2020)
  • Civilization VI (May 2020)
  • Borderlands: The Handsome Collection (May 2020)
  • Control (June 2021)
  • Alien: Isolation (April 2021)
  • Dying Light: Enhanced Edition (April 2022)
  • Death Stranding (May 2022)
  • BioShock: The Collection (May 2022)
  • Fallout: New Vegas (June 2022)
  • GTA V again (January 2023)
  • Dishonored: Definitive Edition (June 2023)
  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider (June 2023)

A complete archived list is available on fan-run sites like EpicDB or the Epic Games Store subreddit wiki. Epic itself does not maintain an official public archive, but the community has tracked every giveaway since launch.

How to Claim a Free Game

Claiming a free game is straightforward:

  1. Create an Epic Games account (or log in).
  2. Go to the Epic Games Store and click on the “Free Games tab.
  3. Click “Get on the current free game.
  4. Complete the free checkout (no payment method needed).
  5. Download the Epic Games Launcher and install the game.

You do not need a credit card or any payment method. The game is added to your library permanently, and you can install it later. If you claim a game on PC, it is also playable on Mac if the game supports macOS.

Common Problems and Solutions

Users sometimes encounter issues when claiming free games. Here are the most frequent problems and fixes:

  • “Getâ€ button is missing – Make sure you are logged in and the offer is still active. If you already claimed the game, the button changes to “In Library.â€
  • Checkout requires payment – This happens if you accidentally clicked a paid version or a bundle. Look for the “Freeâ€ label and use the dedicated free game page.
  • Game not appearing in library – Refresh the library, or log out and back in. Sometimes the launcher needs a restart.
  • Region restrictions – A few games are not available in certain countries due to licensing. Epic will show a message if that’s the case.
  • Claimed game disappears later – This is rare, but if it happens, contact Epic Support with your receipt (the free order confirmation).

Comparison: Epic Free Games vs. Other Stores

Epic’s giveaway is the most generous among major PC storefronts. Steam occasionally offers free weekends or limited-time free games, but they are not permanent. GOG gives away some games for free, but less frequently. Amazon Prime Gaming offers free games monthly, but you need an active Prime subscription. Epic is the only store that gives away full games permanently every single week, with no subscription required. The tradeoff is that you must use the Epic Games Launcher to play them, and some users prefer Steam’s interface and features. However, you can add Epic games to your Steam library as non-Steam shortcuts if you want to launch them from one place.

Safety and Legitimacy

Epic’s free game program is completely legitimate and safe. The games are officially licensed, and you are not getting cracked or pirated copies. Epic pays developers for the promotion, so it’s a win-win for both parties. Be cautious of third-party websites that claim to offer “free Epic games or “Epic game keys – these are often scams or key resellers. Always claim games directly from the Epic Games Store website or launcher. Never enter your Epic password on a third-party site. Also, enable two-factor authentication on your Epic account to prevent unauthorized access, since free games are valuable to resellers.
