Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree Save File Location

Your Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree save file is stored in the same location as your base game saves, because the DLC does not create a separate file. On PC (Steam), the default path is %AppData%\EldenRing\ (which expands to C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\Roaming\EldenRing\), where each character has a numbered folder like 0000 or 1234567890. On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, the save data is managed by the console’s system storage and cannot be accessed directly as a file.

Formula

The calculator works out your average pace and speed from a finish time and distance. The formulas are:

  • Pace (min/km) = Finish time (minutes) ÷ Distance (km)
  • Speed (km/h) = Distance (km) ÷ (Finish time (minutes) ÷ 60)

Where Finish time is in minutes, Distance is in kilometers, Pace is in minutes per kilometer, and Speed is in kilometers per hour. If you use miles, divide the distance in miles by 0.621371 to get kilometers, or use the pace result and multiply by 0.621371 to get min/mile.

Worked Example

Using the default values: finish time = 50 minutes, distance = 10 km.

  1. Pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.00 min/km
  2. Speed = 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.00 km/h

The calculator shows an average pace of 5.00 min/km and an average speed of 12.00 km/h.

Why the DLC Uses the Same Save File

Shadow of the Erdtree is an expansion, not a standalone game. FromSoftware designed it to be accessed from the base game’s main menu after you meet certain conditions (defeating Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood). Because the DLC content is integrated into the same world, it shares the same save data. This means you don’t need to copy or move any extra files when installing the DLC – your existing characters are already ready to access the new area once you fulfill the requirements.

How to Find Your Save on PC (Steam)

On Windows, the save files are stored in the AppData folder, which is hidden by default. To locate them:

  1. Press Windows + R, type %AppData%, and press Enter. This opens C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\Roaming.
  2. Look for a folder named EldenRing. Inside, you’ll see a folder with a long number (your Steam ID) and subfolders like 0000, 0001, etc. Each subfolder corresponds to one character slot.
  3. Inside each character folder, the file ER0000.sl2 (or similar) is the actual save file. The .sl2 extension is FromSoftware’s format.

If you have multiple Steam accounts, each has its own folder under EldenRing. The number folder is your Steam ID, not a character ID.

Backing Up and Restoring Saves

To back up your progress, copy the entire EldenRing folder to another drive or cloud storage. To restore, replace the folder with your backup while the game is closed. This is useful before trying risky actions or if you want to test different builds. On PlayStation and Xbox, you can back up saves to the cloud (if you have a subscription) or to a USB drive (PS only). Note that on PS5, you can only copy saves to a USB drive if the console’s system software supports it; on Xbox, cloud saves are automatic but you can’t manually copy to USB.

Common Problems and Misconceptions

One common issue is that players can’t find the folder because AppData is hidden. Solution: type %AppData% in the Run dialog – it works even if hidden. Another misconception is that the DLC adds a new save file. It doesn’t – it modifies the existing one. Also, some players think deleting the DLC will corrupt saves; that’s false – the save includes DLC items, but if you remove the DLC, those items may become inaccessible until you reinstall, but the file itself remains intact.

Cloud Saves and Cross-Platform

Steam Cloud is enabled by default for Elden Ring, so your saves are synced to Valve’s servers. If you play on multiple PCs, make sure the cloud sync completes before switching. The game does not support cross-platform saves – a PC save cannot be transferred to a console. Each platform uses its own save format and encryption, so there is no official way to convert them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the save file for Shadow of the Erdtree on PC?

It’s the same as the base game: %AppData%\EldenRing\[SteamID]\[CharacterNumber]\ER0000.sl2. The DLC doesn’t create a separate file.

Can I copy my save from one PC to another?

Yes, copy the entire EldenRing folder to the same location on the new PC. Make sure Steam Cloud is off or let it sync first to avoid conflicts.

How do I back up my save on PS5?

Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5) > Console Storage > Upload to Cloud Storage. You can also copy to a USB drive if you have that option enabled.

Will deleting the DLC delete my save?

No. Deleting the DLC files (on PC, uninstalling the game) does not delete your save data. Your save is stored separately in AppData. However, if you uninstall the game, the save remains, but you need to reinstall to play.

Why can’t I see the DLC content in my save?

You need to have defeated Radahn and Mohg, and then interact with the cocoon in Mohgwyn Palace. If you haven’t done that, the DLC won’t appear even if the save is intact.
