To edit a WordPress site, you work in one of four places depending on what you are changing: the WordPress admin dashboard (wp-admin) for content and settings, the block editor for pages and posts, the Site Editor for themes and templates, and the file manager or FTP for code files. This guide explains each location, when to use it, and how to avoid common mistakes.
Formula
The calculator works out your average pace and speed for a run, ride, or walk. You enter the finish time in minutes and the distance in kilometers. The first output is your average pace in minutes per kilometer, calculated by dividing the total time by the distance. The second output is your average speed in kilometers per hour, calculated by dividing the distance by the time in hours.
In symbols: pace = t / d (min/km) and speed = d / (t / 60) (km/h), where t is the total time in minutes and d is the distance in kilometers.
Worked Example
Using the default values from the calculator: finish time = 50 minutes, distance = 10 km.
- Pace = 50 / 10 = 5.00 min/km
- Speed = 10 / (50 / 60) = 10 / 0.8333 = 12.00 km/h
The calculator shows an average pace of 5.00 min/km and an average speed of 12.00 km/h.
When to Use This Calculator
Use this calculator when you want to know your running pace for a race or training run, or when you need to convert a finish time into a speed for a cycling or walking route. It is also handy for planning: if you know a target pace, you can work backward to estimate a finish time for a given distance.
The result is an average, not a split. If you run hills or change speed during the activity, your actual pace will vary, but the average gives you a single number to compare across workouts.
How to Read the Results
The pace output is in minutes per kilometer. A lower number means faster. For example, 4.50 min/km is faster than 5.00 min/km. The speed output is in kilometers per hour, where a higher number means faster. The two are inversely related: a faster pace gives a higher speed.
To convert to miles, remember that 1 mile = 1.60934 km. So a pace of 5.00 min/km is about 8.05 min/mile. To convert speed, divide km/h by 1.60934 to get mph.
Common Mistakes
- Mixing units: Entering time in hours instead of minutes will give a pace that is too slow. Always convert hours to minutes (1 hour = 60 minutes).
- Rounding too early: If you round the time or distance before dividing, the result can be off. Use the full numbers, then round the final answer.
- Confusing pace and speed: Pace is time per distance (min/km), speed is distance per time (km/h). They are not the same.
Limits of the Formula
This formula assumes a constant speed over the entire distance. It does not account for stops, changes in terrain, or wind resistance. For a race with elevation gain, your actual effort will vary, but the average pace still gives a useful summary.
The calculator also assumes the distance is accurate. If you measure a route with a phone GPS, the distance may be slightly off, which will affect the pace.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert pace to speed?
Speed (km/h) = 60 / pace (min/km). For example, a pace of 5 min/km equals 60 / 5 = 12 km/h. The calculator does this for you.
What is a good running pace?
It depends on your fitness and the distance. A recreational runner might do a 5K at 6-7 min/km, while a competitive runner might do a marathon at 4-5 min/km. Use the calculator to see what your current pace is.
Can I use this for walking?
Yes. Walking pace is typically 10-15 min/km. Enter your time and distance to get your average walking pace.
How do I convert min/km to min/mile?
Multiply the pace in min/km by 1.60934. For example, 5 min/km = 5 × 1.60934 = 8.05 min/mile.
