DayZ Night Time Calculator: Real Server Clock
The calculator for this page is switched off while it is checked. The formula is below, and the worked example in the article shows how to use it by hand.
This calculator works out the real-world time of day when it is night in DayZ, based on your server’s time acceleration and the in-game clock. You enter the current real-world time, the server’s time multiplier (how many minutes of game time pass per real minute), and the in-game hour you want to convert; you get back the matching real-world clock time, plus the duration of that night phase.
Formula
The core conversion is: Real time = Current real time + (Target in-game hour − Current in-game hour) ÷ Time acceleration. In words, you first figure out what in-game hour it is right now by multiplying the real minutes since midnight by the server’s acceleration. Then you find how many in-game hours separate that from your target hour, divide by the acceleration to get real minutes, and add those to the current real time.
Variables:
- t – current real time, in minutes after midnight (e.g., 22:00 = 1320 minutes).
- mult – server time acceleration, in game-minutes per real-minute. A value of 12 means 12 game minutes pass every real minute (the common 1-hour day / 1-hour night setup).
- target – the in-game hour you want to convert (0–23).
- night_len – real minutes of full darkness, assuming night runs from 22:00 to 05:00 in-game (7 hours).
The formula uses modular arithmetic to wrap around midnight correctly, so a target hour earlier than the current in-game hour means the night is tomorrow.
Worked Example
Using the defaults: current real time is 22:00, acceleration is 12, target in-game hour is 3.
- Current real time in minutes: 22 × 60 = 1320.
- Current in-game hour: 1320 × 12 = 15,840 game-minutes since midnight → 15,840 ÷ 60 = 264 hours → 264 mod 24 = 0 (midnight in-game).
- Hours from current in-game hour (0) to target (3): 3 − 0 = 3 hours.
- Real minutes for that gap: 3 hours × 60 min ÷ 12 = 15 real minutes.
- Real time: 22:00 + 15 min = 22:15.
The calculator shows 22:15 as the real time when the in-game clock hits 03:00, and 35 real minutes of full night (7 in-game hours × 60 ÷ 12).
Why DayZ Night Length Varies
DayZ servers do not all run on the same day/night cycle. Official servers typically use a 12× acceleration, meaning a full 24-hour in-game day takes 2 real hours (1 hour day, 1 hour night). Community servers often change this to 8×, 10×, or even 20× to shorten nights. The time acceleration is set in the server’s server.cfg file under timeAcceleration. Knowing this number is essential for any night-time planning.
Night in DayZ is not a single fixed period. The game’s lighting transitions gradually, but most players consider full darkness to be roughly from 22:00 to 05:00 in-game. Some servers shorten this by setting a different start or end hour. The calculator assumes the standard 22:00–05:00 window, which you can adjust by changing the target hour.
How to Find Your Server’s Time Acceleration
You usually do not need to ask an admin. The server’s time acceleration is often shown on the server list in the DayZ launcher (look for a “Time” or “Accel” column). If not, join the server and press P to open the in-game map, which shows the current in-game time. Wait one real minute, then check again. The difference in in-game minutes is your acceleration. For example, if the in-game clock jumps 12 minutes in one real minute, your multiplier is 12.
If you cannot join, check the server’s Discord or website; most community servers list their time settings. Avoid guessing, because a wrong multiplier shifts the result by hours.
Common Mistakes When Converting
- Forgetting the wrap-around: If the target hour is earlier than the current in-game hour, the night is on the next real day. The calculator handles this, but doing it manually, people often forget to add 24 hours.
- Mixing up game-minutes per real-minute with real-minutes per game-hour: A 12× server means 12 game minutes per real minute, not 12 real minutes per game hour. The latter would be 0.083×.
- Using the 24-hour clock incorrectly: 22:00 is 10 PM, not 10 AM. Always use 0–23 format.
- Assuming all servers have the same night window: Some modded servers have nights from 21:00 to 06:00, or even longer. Check the server’s stated settings.
Practical Uses for the Result
Knowing the real time of night helps you plan real-life logistics. If you play with friends in different time zones, you can agree to meet in-game during a specific night hour, and this calculator tells each person when to log in. It also helps you decide whether to wait out the night or log off. On a 12× server, a full night is only 35 real minutes, so waiting is often viable. On a 4× server, the same night lasts 1 hour 45 minutes, which may not be worth sitting through.
For base raiding, many players prefer night because it hides their movement. If you know the exact real minute when darkness starts, you can coordinate an attack. Conversely, if you are a solo player, you might want to avoid night entirely. This calculator gives you the precise real-world window so you can schedule your sessions.
Limitations of the Formula
The calculator assumes a constant time acceleration. Some modded servers change acceleration dynamically (e.g., faster nights, slower days). In that case, the result is only approximate for the current phase. It also assumes the server clock is synchronized with real time at the moment you check; if the server restarted recently, the in-game time may be offset. Finally, the 22:00–05:00 night window is a convention, not a game rule. The actual darkness depends on weather and server settings.
For most official and standard community servers, the formula is accurate to within a minute. For heavily modded servers, treat the result as a rough guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the default time acceleration on official DayZ servers? Official servers use 12×, meaning one real hour equals 12 in-game hours. A full day/night cycle takes 2 real hours.
How long is a night on a 12× server? Using the standard 22:00–05:00 window, that is 7 in-game hours, which at 12× equals 35 real minutes.
Can I change the night length on my own server? Yes, you can set timeAcceleration in your server config. Lower values (e.g., 4) make nights longer; higher values (e.g., 20) make them shorter.
Why does the calculator show a different time than my in-game watch? The in-game watch shows the current in-game hour, not the real time of day. The calculator converts between the two. If the server has a time offset (e.g., starts at 12:00), you need to account for that offset separately.
Is night really darker in DayZ than in other survival games? Yes, DayZ nights are notoriously dark, especially without a light source. That is why players plan around them.
