Change iTunes Account Details on iPhone, Mac, or Web
You can change the details for the account used with iTunes by updating your Apple Account settings—Apple now uses “Apple Account” for what was formerly called an Apple ID. The route depends on what you need to change: your name or contact information, password, payment method, country or region, or account used for purchases.
What “iTunes account” means today
There is no separate iTunes account for most users. The same Apple Account signs in to Apple services such as the App Store, Apple Music, and iCloud, although a device can use one account for iCloud and another for purchases. Changing account information can therefore affect more than iTunes purchases.
On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings and tap your name at the top. On a Mac, open System Settings and select your name. On a Windows PC, use the Apple Music or Apple TV app, or the Apple Devices app where applicable; account options can vary by app and version. You can also manage many details at account.apple.com.
Change your name, email, or phone number
- Open Settings on an iPhone or iPad and tap your name. On a Mac, open System Settings and select your name.
- Open Sign-In & Security to review the email addresses and phone numbers associated with the account. Use the available controls to add, remove, or update contact details.
- To change the name displayed on your account, open Personal Information and edit the relevant field. Menu labels may differ slightly across operating-system versions.
- Follow any verification prompts. Apple may send a code to a trusted phone number or email address before accepting changes.
If you change the primary email address, check that you can receive messages at the new address and keep access to a trusted phone number. The email may be used to sign in and receive account notices. An address already associated with another Apple Account may not be available to add.
Update your password or security details
To change your password on an iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > your name > Sign-In & Security > Change Password. On a Mac, select Apple menu > System Settings > your name > Sign-In & Security, then choose the password option. You may be asked for your device passcode or current password.
Use a password that is difficult to guess and not reused for another service. Updating it can require you to sign in again on some devices or services. If you cannot sign in or no longer have access to a trusted device or number, use Apple’s account-recovery process rather than repeatedly guessing passwords. Recovery can take time, and support cannot simply bypass the account’s security checks.
Change the payment method or billing address
Payment details for purchases are managed separately from your name and sign-in email. On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings > your name > Payment & Shipping. On a Mac, open System Settings, select your name, then choose Payment & Shipping. You may be asked to authenticate before editing information.
Add or update the payment method and billing address, then remove an old method if the account allows it. The account may require a valid payment method when there are unpaid charges, active subscriptions, or other billing obligations. A card can also be declined because its details, billing address, or issuer approval do not match; contact the payment provider if the information is correct but the charge still fails.
A payment method is not the same as the account’s country or region. Changing a billing address alone will not move an account to a different store. Likewise, changing the payment method does not automatically update subscriptions already billed through another provider.
Change your country or region
Your account’s country or region determines which store and content catalog are available. Before changing it, review Apple’s current requirements: you may need to spend any remaining store balance, cancel subscriptions and wait for their terms to end, and provide a payment method and billing address valid for the new region. Availability and requirements can vary.
On an iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > your name > Media & Purchases > View Account > Country/Region. On a Mac, open the Music app, choose Account > Account Settings, sign in if asked, then look for the country or region option. If an option is unavailable, check for active subscriptions, an unfinished rental or preorder, unpaid balance, or membership in a family group. Apple’s current support instructions explain which conditions apply.
Changing regions can affect access to previously purchased or available content. Do not assume that subscriptions, apps, or media will transfer unchanged; check availability and account requirements before confirming the change.
Choose the right account on a device
Some Apple devices show separate sign-in controls for iCloud and for media purchases. On an iPhone or iPad, the account for purchases is under Settings > your name > Media & Purchases. This can differ from the account shown at the top of Settings. If purchases appear under an unexpected account, check this section before signing out of iCloud.
Signing out can affect synced services, downloaded content, and access to purchases. Do not remove an account from a device just to change a billing detail; update the relevant information while signed in whenever possible. If a family member made a purchase, it may belong to their account and cannot be reassigned simply by changing your own account details.
Common problems and safe checks
- You cannot edit a field: confirm you are signed in to the intended account and have completed any verification prompt. Try account.apple.com or another trusted device.
- A verification code does not arrive: check the trusted phone number and devices listed in account settings, and confirm that the device has network access. Do not share a verification code with anyone.
- A payment update is rejected: compare the billing address and payment details with the information held by the provider, then check for unpaid orders or subscription requirements.
- You see purchases from another account: inspect the Media & Purchases sign-in, which may be different from the iCloud account.
- You receive an unexpected sign-in prompt: do not approve it if you did not initiate the sign-in. Review account devices and security details through Apple’s official account settings.
Use Apple’s own Settings screens or account.apple.com for account changes. Be cautious of messages or websites asking for your password, payment details, or verification code. A legitimate support conversation should not require you to disclose a one-time code to another person.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an iTunes account the same as an Apple Account?
Usually, yes. “Apple Account” is the current name for the account formerly called an Apple ID, and it is used for iTunes-related purchases and other Apple services.
Can I change my Apple Account email without losing purchases?
Changing the account’s sign-in email does not by itself create a new account or move purchases. Keep using the same account, and verify the new email as instructed.
How do I change the account used for iTunes purchases?
On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings > your name > Media & Purchases and review the signed-in account. Check carefully before signing out, because downloaded content and purchases may depend on that account.
Why can’t I change my country or region?
An active subscription, remaining store balance, family-group membership, unpaid order, or other account condition may prevent the change. Review the requirements shown in account settings and Apple’s support guidance.
Do I need to change my Apple Account to update my card?
No. Update the payment method in Payment & Shipping; changing the account itself is not normally necessary.
