This page explains what it takes to change a calculator icon on a phone, tablet, or computer, and walks you through the general steps for the most common systems. You will learn where the icon comes from, how to replace it with a custom image, and what to do when the change does not stick.
Formula
The calculator above works out your running pace and speed from a finish time and distance. The formulas are:
- Pace (min/km) = Finish time (minutes) ÷ Distance (km)
- Speed (km/h) = Distance (km) ÷ (Finish time (minutes) ÷ 60)
In symbols: pace = t / d and speed = d / (t / 60), where t is the finish time in minutes and d is the distance in kilometres. If you measure distance in miles, the pace comes out in min/mile and the speed in miles per hour, because the units cancel in the same way.
Worked Example
Using the default values from the calculator (finish time 50 minutes, distance 10 km):
- Pace = 50 min ÷ 10 km = 5.00 min/km
- Speed = 10 km ÷ (50 min ÷ 60) = 10 km ÷ 0.8333 h = 12.00 km/h
The calculator shows an average pace of 5.00 min/km and an average speed of 12.00 km/h, matching the manual calculation.
When to Use This Calculator
Use this tool when you have a race time or a training run time and want to know your average pace or speed. It is useful for planning a target pace for a race, checking if you hit a training goal, or comparing runs of different distances. The formula assumes a constant speed, so it gives an average, not the actual speed at any moment during the run.
How to Read the Result
The pace tells you how many minutes (and seconds) it takes to cover one kilometre or one mile. A lower pace number means faster running. The speed tells you how many kilometres (or miles) you cover in one hour. For example, a 50-minute 10 km gives a pace of 5:00 per km, which is a common recreational runner’s pace. If you run on a treadmill, the displayed speed is usually in km/h or mph, so you can match it to the calculator’s speed output.
Common Mistakes and Limits
- Unit mix-ups: If you enter distance in miles but time in minutes, the pace is min/mile. Do not mix kilometres and miles without converting. 1 mile = 1.60934 km.
- Rounding too early: Round only the final answer, not intermediate steps. For a 50 min, 10 km run, rounding the time to 0.833 hours first gives 12.0 km/h, but if you round to 0.8 hours you get 12.5 km/h, which is wrong.
- Constant speed assumption: Real runs have hills, stops, and changes in effort. The average pace is still useful, but it does not describe your speed at any given moment.
- Time format: Enter the finish time in minutes only. If you ran 1 hour 10 minutes, enter 70, not 1:10.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I change the calculator icon on my Android phone?
On most Android phones, long-press the calculator icon on the home screen, tap “Edit or the pencil icon, then tap the app icon and choose a new image from your gallery or a preset set. Some launchers (like Nova or Samsung One UI) allow this directly; others require a third-party icon pack app. The change applies to the shortcut on that screen, not the app itself.
Can I change the calculator icon on an iPhone?
Yes, but not directly. iOS does not allow changing app icons natively. The common method is to use the Shortcuts app: create a new shortcut that opens the Calculator app, then tap the shortcut’s icon and choose a photo or colour. Add that shortcut to your home screen. The original Calculator icon will still be in the App Library.
Why does my custom calculator icon revert to the original?
This usually happens because you edited the shortcut, not the app itself. On Android, if you use a launcher that does not save custom icons, or if you clear the launcher’s cache, the icon may reset. On iOS, the Shortcuts method creates a separate shortcut; if you delete the shortcut, the icon disappears. Also, after a system update, some launchers reset to defaults.
Is it safe to use third-party icon changer apps?
Most icon changer apps from official app stores are safe, but they often require permissions like “draw over other apps or “modify system settings. Always read the permissions and check reviews. Avoid apps that ask for unnecessary access to your personal data. The safest method is using the built-in launcher or the Shortcuts app on iOS.
Does changing the icon affect the calculator’s function?
No. The icon is only a visual shortcut. The underlying app remains unchanged. You are not modifying the calculator’s code; you are only changing the picture that represents it on your home screen. The calculator will work exactly as before.
Can I change the icon on a Windows or Mac computer?
On Windows, you can right-click the calculator shortcut, go to Properties, click “Change Icon, and choose a file with .ico format. On Mac, right-click the app in Finder, select “Get Info, click the small icon in the top-left, and paste a new image. These changes are cosmetic and do not affect the program.
