MW4 Campaign Correct Choices & Outcomes

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 (commonly called MW4, though the actual 2022 release is titled Modern Warfare II) does not have a branching campaign where your choices change the story or ending. The campaign is a linear, scripted experience; every mission has a fixed set of objectives and a single canonical outcome. What you can choose are optional actions within missions—like which weapon to pick up, which route to take, or whether to complete a bonus objective—but these choices never alter the plot, the fate of characters, or the final ending. This article explains exactly what choices exist, what they affect, and why the campaign is designed this way.

Formula

The calculator above works out your average pace and speed for a run or ride. The formulas are:

  • Pace (min/km) = Finish time (minutes) ÷ Distance (km)
  • Speed (km/h) = Distance (km) ÷ (Finish time (minutes) ÷ 60)

Where t is the total time in minutes, and d is the distance in kilometres. Pace tells you how many minutes it takes to cover one kilometre; speed tells you how many kilometres you cover in one hour.

Worked Example

Using the default values from the calculator: finish time = 50 minutes, distance = 10 km.

  1. Pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.00 min/km
  2. Speed = 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.00 km/h

So a 10 km run in 50 minutes gives an average pace of 5:00 per kilometre and an average speed of 12 km/h.

What Choices Actually Exist in the MW4 Campaign?

Modern Warfare 4 (the 2022 Modern Warfare II) has 17 campaign missions. None of them present a dialogue wheel, a moral decision, or a branching path that leads to a different ending. The only choices you make are tactical:

  • Weapon loadout: At mission start, you often pick your primary weapon, secondary, and lethal/tactical equipment. This affects how you play but not the story.
  • Approach: Some missions let you choose between stealth and loud. For example, in “Cartel Protectionâ€ you can sneak through the compound or go in guns blazing. Both lead to the same cutscene.
  • Optional objectives: A few missions have optional intel or side objectives (e.g., finding a specific laptop). Completing them unlocks achievements or cosmetic rewards, but not story changes.
  • Dialogue options: There are no dialogue choices in the campaign. All conversations are scripted.

Why the Campaign Is Linear

Call of Duty campaigns have historically been linear, cinematic experiences. The developers design them as a tightly scripted action movie, with set-piece moments, scripted enemy waves, and predetermined character arcs. Branching narratives would require recording multiple endings, multiple character fates, and extensive voice acting—something the series has rarely done. The only exception in the modern era is Black Ops Cold War (2020), which had two endings based on a choice in the final mission. Modern Warfare 4 does not follow that model.

How to “Get the Best Ending – Common Misconception

Many players search for “all correct choices expecting a good/bad ending system. In MW4, there is no such system. The ending is fixed: the campaign concludes with a cliffhanger that leads into the sequel (Modern Warfare III, 2023). No matter what you do, the same cutscene plays. The only thing that changes is your personal stats: accuracy, time, and difficulty-based achievements.

If you want to see all content, you can replay missions to find intel or try different weapons. But you will never see a different ending or save a character who is destined to die.

Common Problems and Misunderstandings

  • “I chose the wrong dialogue and got a bad ending.â€ – There are no dialogue choices, so this cannot happen.
  • “I missed an optional objective, did I break the story?â€ – No. Optional objectives are purely for achievements or collectibles.
  • “Does killing or sparing an enemy change anything?â€ – No. Enemies are scripted; any takedown is part of the linear plot.
  • “Can I save the character who dies in mission 10?â€ – No. That death is a scripted story beat and cannot be prevented.

Comparison with Other CoD Campaigns

For context, Modern Warfare 2019 also had a linear campaign with no choices. Black Ops Cold War is the only recent CoD with a meaningful choice (the final mission lets you decide to shoot or not shoot a character, leading to two different endings). Vanguard (2021) was linear. So MW4 is typical of the series, not an outlier. If you want a CoD campaign with branching outcomes, you need to play Black Ops Cold War or the older Black Ops II (which had multiple endings based on mission performance).

How to Approach the Campaign for Maximum Enjoyment

Since choices don’t affect the story, the best approach is to play on a difficulty that suits you and focus on the experience. If you want to unlock all achievements, you’ll need to:

  • Collect all intel items (each mission has 1-3).
  • Complete missions on Veteran difficulty.
  • Finish certain missions under a time limit or with specific weapons.

These are the only “correct choices if you are a completionist. Otherwise, play however you like—the story will unfold the same way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Modern Warfare 4 have multiple endings?

No. The campaign has a single, fixed ending. The story continues in the sequel, so the ending is a cliffhanger that is the same for every player.

Can I choose to save a character who dies?

No. Character deaths are scripted and cannot be prevented by any in-game action. They are part of the narrative.

What happens if I fail an optional objective?

Nothing changes in the story. You simply miss out on an achievement or collectible. You can replay the mission later to get it.

Is there a “canon choice for weapons or tactics?

No. The game does not track your weapon choices or tactics for story purposes. The cutscenes always show the same events regardless of your loadout.

Why do some YouTube videos claim there are choices?

Those videos are likely about Black Ops Cold War or Black Ops II, which do have choices. Or they are clickbait. MW4’s campaign is linear.

Does the campaign have a New Game Plus mode?

No. There is no New Game Plus. You can replay individual missions from the mission select menu, but there is no carry-over of upgrades or choices.
