Business Days Calculator Between Two Dates
The calculator for this page is switched off while it is checked. The formula is below, and the worked example in the article shows how to use it by hand.
A business days calculator between two dates works out the number of working days (typically Monday–Friday) that fall within a given start and end date, excluding weekends and optionally holidays. You enter the start date, the end date, and any holidays you want to skip, and the calculator returns the count of business days, along with the total calendar days and the number of weekends. This is the standard tool for estimating delivery times, project deadlines, and contract timelines.
Formula
The basic formula counts the total days between the two dates (inclusive), then subtracts the weekends. In plain terms:
- Total days = End date – Start date + 1 (inclusive count)
- Full weeks = floor(Total days / 7)
- Weekend days = Full weeks × 2 + (extra days that fall on Saturday or Sunday)
- Business days = Total days – Weekend days – Holidays
In the calculator, the computation uses the internal numeric representation of dates (milliseconds since 1970-01-01). The expression floor((d2 - d1) / 86400000) + 1 gives the total calendar days. The weekend count is derived from the day-of-week of the start date, using the modulo operation to find the offset. Holidays are subtracted after the weekend calculation, but in the block above the holiday list is not directly subtracted because the expression expects numeric inputs; the user should subtract the number of holidays manually or the calculator can be extended. For clarity, the formula in the block computes business days without holiday subtraction, and the user can subtract the holiday count from the result.
Worked Example
Using the default values: Start date = 2024-01-01 (Monday), End date = 2024-01-31 (Wednesday).
- Total calendar days = 31 – 1 + 1 = 31 days.
- Number of full weeks = floor(31 / 7) = 4 weeks, which gives 4 × 2 = 8 weekend days.
- Remaining days after 4 weeks = 31 – 28 = 3 days (Mon, Tue, Wed) – none are weekends, so no extra weekend days.
- Business days = 31 – 8 = 23 days.
- If you enter holidays like 2024-01-01 (New Year’s Day) and 2024-01-15 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day), subtract 2 from 23 to get 21 business days.
The calculator output for the defaults (without holiday subtraction) shows 23 business days.
Why Use a Business Days Calculator
Many real-world deadlines are stated in “business days rather than calendar days. For instance, a shipping company might promise delivery in 5 business days, a government agency might have 10 business days to respond to a request, or a contract might require payment within 30 business days. Using a business days calculator removes the mental load of counting weekends and gives a precise date or count. It also helps with project planning: if you know a task takes 15 business days, you can quickly find the expected completion date by entering the start date and adding 15 business days (some calculators allow adding days to a date, but this one counts between two dates).
How to Use the Calculator
Enter the start date and end date in the format YYYY-MM-DD (or whatever the input field accepts). The calculator automatically computes the total calendar days, the number of weekend days, and the business days. If you have known holidays, you can list them in the holidays field, but note that the current block does not subtract them automatically; you would need to subtract the count of holidays from the result. For a more advanced calculator, you could add a list of holiday dates and the formula would count how many fall within the range and subtract them. In this version, the holiday field is provided for reference, but the arithmetic in the block only handles weekends.
Common Mistakes and Misconceptions
A frequent error is forgetting that the start and end dates are inclusive. If a task starts on Monday and ends on Wednesday, that is 3 business days, not 2. Another mistake is assuming all countries have the same weekend – in most of the world it’s Saturday-Sunday, but some countries like Israel have Friday-Saturday, and the UAE has Saturday-Sunday (recently changed). Always check the local working week. Also, holidays vary by country, region, and even company. A business days calculator that doesn’t let you input holidays will overcount days if a holiday falls within the range. Finally, some calculators count the start date as day 0, which gives a different result. Always verify whether the calculator is inclusive or exclusive.
Limitations of the Formula
The pure mathematical formula assumes a consistent Monday-Friday workweek and ignores public holidays. It also doesn’t account for half-days, company-specific holidays, or emergency closures. For legal or contractual purposes, always confirm the exact definition of “business day in the relevant agreement. The formula also doesn’t handle time zones or daylight saving changes – but since it works on dates (not times), that is usually not an issue. If you need to include holidays, you must provide the list and subtract them manually or use a calculator that supports holiday lists.
Alternatives and Related Tools
If you need to add business days to a specific date (e.g., “What is 10 business days from today?), you would use a different calculator that adds days while skipping weekends. Some calculators also allow you to set a custom weekend (e.g., Friday-Saturday) or include a holiday calendar. Spreadsheet software like Excel has the NETWORKDAYS function that does exactly this, and it can be customized with holidays. For quick mental math, you can estimate by counting weeks: 5 business days = 1 week, 10 business days = 2 weeks, etc., but this fails when holidays occur. For precise results, always use a tool that lets you input the specific dates and holidays.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I count business days between two dates?
Count the total number of calendar days, then subtract the weekends. If you have holidays, subtract those as well. For example, from Monday to Friday is 5 business days if no holidays fall in between. Use the calculator above to do it automatically.
Are Saturday and Sunday always excluded?
In most countries, yes, but not everywhere. Some countries have a different weekend, such as Friday-Saturday in many Middle Eastern nations. Always confirm the local workweek when calculating business days for international contexts.
What if a holiday falls on a weekend?
Many organizations observe the holiday on the nearest weekday (e.g., if a holiday falls on Saturday, they may take Friday off). However, the standard business days calculation simply counts Monday-Friday, so a holiday on a weekend does not reduce the business day count unless you explicitly subtract it. Check your company policy or contract.
Does the start date count as a business day?
That depends on the convention. In this calculator, the start date is included (inclusive). Some contexts exclude the start date, especially in legal or delivery timelines. Always confirm whether the count is inclusive or exclusive.
Can I use this calculator for future dates?
Yes, the calculator works for any dates, past or future. Just enter the dates you want. For future dates, it can help you plan deadlines and see how many working days you have.
How do I add business days to a date?
This calculator counts between two dates. To add business days to a specific date, you would need a different tool that adds days while skipping weekends and holidays. Alternatively, you can use the reverse process: enter the start date and a tentative end date, adjust until the business day count matches your desired number.
