Box Volume Calculator Gallons: How to Use It

This calculator converts the volume of a rectangular box (length × width × height) into gallons, and it also shows the volume in cubic feet, liters, and cubic inches. You enter the three inside dimensions of the box in inches, feet, centimeters, or meters, and the calculator returns the equivalent volume in US gallons (and other units). The first result, the headline answer, is the number of US gallons the box holds.

Formula

The formula for the volume of a rectangular box is:

V = L × W × H

where:

  • V = volume in cubic inches (in³) if L, W, H are in inches
  • L = length of the box (in inches, feet, cm, or m)
  • W = width of the box (same unit as L)
  • H = height of the box (same unit as L)

To convert cubic inches to US gallons, divide by 231 (because 1 US gallon = 231 in³). If you measure in feet, the volume in cubic feet is L × W × H, and 1 cubic foot = 7.48052 US gallons. If you measure in centimeters, the volume in cubic centimeters is L × W × H, and 1 US gallon = 3785.41 cm³. The calculator uses the inch-based conversion for the default, but you can enter any unit and it will convert internally.

Worked Example

Using the default values: length = 24 in, width = 12 in, height = 12 in.

  1. Calculate the volume in cubic inches: 24 × 12 × 12 = 3456 in³.
  2. Convert to US gallons: 3456 ÷ 231 = 14.96 gallons.
  3. The calculator rounds to two decimals, so it shows 14.96 gallons.

For reference, the same box is 3456 ÷ 1728 = 2.00 cubic feet, and 3456 × 0.0163871 = 56.63 liters.

When to Use This Calculator

You would use a box volume calculator in gallons when you need to know how much liquid or loose material a rectangular container can hold. Common situations include:

  • Choosing an aquarium or fish tank (rectangular tanks are the standard shape).
  • Estimating the amount of soil, mulch, or gravel needed for a planter box.
  • Determining the capacity of a storage tote or shipping box in liquid terms.
  • Calculating the volume of a rectangular fuel tank or water reservoir.
  • Checking whether a container meets a shipping or storage volume requirement.

The calculator works for any rectangular prism, so it also applies to boxes with slanted sides only if you use the average width and height, but for a true rectangular box, it is exact.

How to Read the Result

The main result is the volume in US gallons. Note that there are two different gallons: US gallons and imperial (UK) gallons. This calculator uses US gallons, which are smaller than imperial gallons. One imperial gallon is about 1.20095 US gallons, so if you need imperial gallons, multiply the US gallon result by 0.832674. Also, the volume calculation assumes the box is a perfect rectangular prism with straight sides and no internal obstructions. If the box has rounded corners or is not exactly rectangular, the result will be slightly higher than the actual usable capacity.

Common Mistakes and Unit Mix-Ups

The most frequent error is mixing units. For example, if you measure length in feet but width in inches, the volume will be wrong. Always use the same unit for all three dimensions. Another common mistake is confusing the conversion factor: 1 cubic foot = 7.48 gallons, but 1 cubic yard = 201.97 gallons. If you are working with large containers, remember that 1 cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so multiply by 7.48 to get gallons. Also, be careful with the difference between US liquid gallons and US dry gallons. The dry gallon is rarely used, but it equals 268.8 cubic inches. This calculator uses the liquid gallon (231 in³).

Limitations of the Formula

The formula assumes the box has uniform cross-section and straight sides. For a cylinder, you would need a different formula (π × radius² × height). For a tapered container, like a bucket or a hopper, the volume is not simply L×W×H; you would need the average area or a more complex integration. Also, the calculator gives the total volume, not the usable volume. If the box has a lid that protrudes inside, or if you are filling it with a liquid that cannot completely fill every corner (due to surface tension or air pockets), the actual capacity will be slightly less. For granular materials like sand or gravel, the volume can vary with compaction and moisture content, so the calculated volume is an approximation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many gallons is a box that is 18×18×18 inches?

Calculate the cubic inches: 18 × 18 × 18 = 5832 in³. Divide by 231: 5832 ÷ 231 = 25.25 US gallons. So an 18-inch cube holds about 25.25 gallons.

How do I convert cubic feet to gallons?

Multiply the cubic feet by 7.48052. For example, 5 cubic feet × 7.48052 = 37.4 US gallons. If you need imperial gallons, multiply cubic feet by 6.22884.

What is the difference between US and imperial gallons?

A US gallon is 231 cubic inches (about 3.785 liters). An imperial gallon is 277.42 cubic inches (about 4.546 liters). So an imperial gallon is about 20% larger. This calculator gives US gallons; to get imperial, multiply the result by 0.832674.

Can I use this for a cylinder?

No, this calculator is only for rectangular boxes. For a cylinder, use the formula V = π × r² × h, then convert to gallons. For example, a cylinder with radius 6 inches and height 12 inches has volume π × 36 × 12 = 1357.17 in³, which is 1357.17 ÷ 231 = 5.87 gallons.

How many gallons are in a cubic foot?

There are 7.48052 US gallons in one cubic foot. This is a fixed conversion factor. For imperial gallons, there are 6.22884 imperial gallons per cubic foot.

Why does the calculator show 14.96 gallons for a 24×12×12 box?

Because 24 × 12 × 12 = 3456 cubic inches, and 3456 ÷ 231 = 14.961 gallons. Rounded to two decimals, it is 14.96. If you measure in feet (2 × 1 × 1 = 2 cubic feet), multiplying by 7.48052 gives 14.961 gallons, the same result.
