Block or Unblock Someone on Clubhouse?

If you want to stop someone from seeing your rooms or interacting with you on Clubhouse, you block them; if you blocked someone by mistake or want to give them another chance, you unblock them. Blocking is immediate and private, and unblocking does not automatically follow them again. Here is how both actions work, what they actually do, and how to decide which one you need.

What Blocking Does on Clubhouse

Blocking someone on Clubhouse is a hard boundary. The person you block cannot see your profile, join rooms you are in, follow you, or send you a direct message. If you are both in the same room, they will be removed from it immediately. They also cannot see your clubs or invite you to speak. The block is tied to your account, so it applies across all of Clubhouse, not just one room or club.

One thing people often miss: blocking is not the same as muting. Muting someone in a room only silences them for you in that specific room. Blocking is permanent until you change it and affects the entire platform.

How to Block Someone

You can block someone from a few different places, and the steps are short in each case.

  • From their profile: Open their profile, tap the three-dot menu (⋯) in the top-right corner, then select Block. Confirm when asked.
  • From a room: If they are speaking or in the audience, tap their avatar to open their profile, then use the same three-dot menu and choose Block.
  • From a DM conversation: Open the chat, tap the three-dot menu at the top, then choose Block.

Clubhouse does not notify the other person when you block them. They will simply stop seeing you and your rooms. If they try to look you up, your profile will not appear.

How to Unblock Someone

Unblocking is just as straightforward, but you have to go into your settings to do it.

  1. Tap your profile picture in the bottom-right corner.
  2. Tap the gear icon (Settings) in the top-right.
  3. Scroll down and tap Blocked under the Privacy section.
  4. Find the person in the list and tap the Unblock button next to their name.

After you unblock, the person can see your profile again, follow you, and join rooms you are in. They will not get a notification that you unblocked them, and they will not automatically be re-followed by you. If you want to follow them again, you have to do that manually.

How to Choose Between Blocking and Other Options

Blocking is the most extreme option, and it is not always the right one. Before you block, consider what you are trying to achieve.

  • If they are being disruptive in a room: Use the room-level moderation tools first. As a moderator, you can mute them, remove them as a speaker, or send them to the audience. You can also report them to Clubhouse if they break the rules.
  • If they are sending unwanted DMs: You can report the message, or you can block them. Blocking will stop all future messages and hide your profile from them.
  • If you just want to avoid seeing their content: You can unfollow them, or you can use the Mute option on their profile to stop their notifications and posts without fully blocking.
  • If you feel unsafe or harassed: Blocking is the right call. You can also report the account to Clubhouse for harassment, which is a separate step from blocking.

A common misconception is that blocking someone removes you from their followers list or removes them from yours. It does not. The block simply makes your profiles invisible to each other. When you unblock, the previous follow relationship is still there, but it is not active until you re-follow.

Common Problems and Misunderstandings

People run into a few recurring issues with blocking and unblocking on Clubhouse.

  • “Why can I still see their old messages?â€ Blocking does not delete past DMs. The conversation stays in your inbox, but you cannot send new messages. You can delete the conversation manually if you want it gone.
  • “Why did they disappear from my followers?â€ If you block someone, they are removed from your followers list and your following list. They are not gone from the platform, just hidden from you. When you unblock, they reappear if they still follow you.
  • “Can they tell I blocked them?â€ No, Clubhouse does not send a notification. They will just notice that your profile is missing or that they cannot join rooms you are in.
  • “Will unblocking let them know?â€ No, unblocking is also silent. They will only see that they can interact with you again if they happen to try.
  • “What if I block someone and then join a room they are in?â€ You will not be able to see them in the room, and they will not be able to see you. If one of you is a speaker, the block takes effect and removes the blocked person from the room.

Blocking vs. Reporting

Blocking and reporting are different actions, and you can do both at the same time. Blocking is a personal choice to stop interacting with someone. Reporting is a formal complaint to Clubhouse that the person violated the community guidelines. If someone is threatening you, sending spam, or engaging in hate speech, you should report them in addition to blocking them. Clubhouse reviews reports and can suspend or remove accounts that break the rules. A block alone does not alert the platform to the behavior.

You can report someone from their profile by tapping the three-dot menu and choosing Report. You will be asked to select a reason, and you can add details. The report is confidential, and the person is not notified that you reported them.

Safety and Privacy Considerations

Blocking is a strong privacy tool, but it is not a complete shield. If someone is determined to contact you, they could create a new account. For that reason, if you are dealing with serious harassment, also consider tightening your profile privacy settings. You can make your profile private so only followers can see your rooms, and you can limit who can DM you. Clubhouse also has a Safety section in settings where you can control who can see your online status and who can follow you.

If you are a moderator of a club or room, blocking someone does not automatically remove them from your club. You need to remove them from the club separately if you want that. Blocking only affects your personal interactions with them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does blocking someone on Clubhouse delete our DMs?
No. Your message history stays in your inbox. You can delete the conversation manually by opening it and tapping the three-dot menu, then choosing Delete. The other person still has their copy.

Can I block someone without them knowing?
Yes. Clubhouse does not send a notification when you block someone. They will only notice that they cannot see your profile or join rooms you are in.

If I unblock someone, do I have to follow them again?
No. Unblocking restores the ability to see each other, but it does not automatically re-follow. If you were following them before the block, that follow is paused, not deleted. After unblocking, you can choose to follow them again manually.

What is the difference between muting and blocking in a room?
Muting only affects your view of that person in that specific room. You will not hear them, but they can still speak to others. Blocking removes them from the room entirely and prevents them from seeing you anywhere on the platform.

Can a blocked person still see my clubs?
No. When you block someone, they cannot see your profile, your clubs, or your rooms. If they are a member of a club you lead, they can still see the club itself, but they will not see you as a moderator or member until you unblock them.

How do I see who I have blocked?
Go to your profile, tap the gear icon (Settings), scroll to Privacy, and tap Blocked. You will see a list of everyone you have blocked, and you can unblock them from there.
