Area Calculator m2: How to Measure Square Meters

This calculator works out the area of a rectangle in square meters (m²) from the length and width you enter, and it also gives the result in square feet and square yards. Type in the length and width in meters, or switch to feet and inches, and you get the area in m² instantly.

Formula

The formula for the area of a rectangle is:

Area (m²) = Length (m) × Width (m)

Where:

  • Length – the longer side of the rectangle, measured in meters.
  • Width – the shorter side, also in meters.
  • Area – the result in square meters (m²).

If your measurements are in centimeters, feet, or inches, convert them to meters first: 1 m = 100 cm = 3.28084 ft = 39.3701 in.

Worked Example

Using the default values from the calculator: length = 5 m, width = 3 m.

  1. Multiply length by width: 5 × 3 = 15 m².
  2. Convert to square feet: 15 × 10.7639 = 161.46 sq ft.
  3. Convert to square yards: 15 × 1.19599 = 17.94 sq yd.

The calculator shows 15.00 m² as the headline answer, with 161.46 sq ft and 17.94 sq yd below it.

When to Use an Area Calculator in m²

Square meters are the standard unit of area in most of the world, used for flooring, tiling, painting, gardening, and real estate. You need this calculation when:

  • Buying carpet, vinyl, or laminate flooring – you need the floor area in m².
  • Estimating paint or wallpaper – coverage is usually stated per m² per liter.
  • Planning a garden or lawn – fertilizer, soil, and grass seed are sold by m².
  • Checking property listings – room sizes are often quoted in m².
  • Calculating the area of a wall for tiling or cladding.

For non-rectangular shapes, you can split them into rectangles and add the areas together. For a triangle, use (base × height) / 2; for a circle, use π × radius².

How to Measure a Room in Square Meters

To get an accurate area, measure in meters. If you only have a tape measure marked in feet or centimeters, convert before multiplying.

  1. Measure the length of the room from wall to wall, in meters.
  2. Measure the width at the widest point.
  3. Multiply the two numbers to get the area in m².
  4. If the room is L-shaped, divide it into rectangles, calculate each, and add them.

For example, a room that is 4.2 m long and 3.8 m wide has an area of 4.2 × 3.8 = 15.96 m². Always round up when buying materials to allow for waste.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

The most frequent error is mixing units. If you measure one side in meters and the other in centimeters, the result is wrong. Always convert both to meters first.

  • Mistake: Measuring in centimeters and multiplying directly – you get cm², not m². Divide by 10,000 to get m².
  • Mistake: Using feet and inches without converting – 1 foot = 0.3048 m, so multiply feet by 0.3048 to get meters.
  • Mistake: Forgetting to round up when ordering materials – always add 5–10% extra for cuts and waste.
  • Mistake: Confusing m² with m (linear meter) – m² is area, m is length.

Also, remember that 1 m² = 10.7639 sq ft, not 3.28 sq ft. The conversion factor for area is the square of the linear conversion factor.

Limits of the Formula

This calculator assumes a perfect rectangle. Real rooms often have alcoves, bay windows, or irregular angles. For those, break the space into smaller rectangles and sum the areas. The formula also assumes flat surfaces – it does not account for slopes or curved walls.

For land measurement, note that some countries use hectares (1 ha = 10,000 m²) or acres (1 acre = 4,046.86 m²). This calculator is for small to medium areas; for large plots, use specialized land survey tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert square feet to square meters?

Multiply the area in square feet by 0.092903 to get square meters. For example, 100 sq ft × 0.092903 = 9.29 m².

What is the difference between m² and sq m?

None. They are two ways of writing the same unit: square meters. The symbol m² is the standard international notation.

How many square meters is a 12×12 room?

Assuming the room is 12 feet by 12 feet, first convert to meters: 12 ft × 0.3048 = 3.6576 m. Then multiply: 3.6576 × 3.6576 = 13.38 m².

Can I use this calculator for a triangle?

No, this calculator is for rectangles only. For a triangle, use the formula (base × height) / 2, with both measurements in meters.

How do I calculate the area of a wall in m²?

Measure the height and width of the wall in meters, then multiply them. Subtract the area of doors and windows if you are calculating paint or tile coverage.

What is 1 square meter in centimeters?

1 m² = 10,000 cm². This is because 1 m = 100 cm, and 100 × 100 = 10,000.
