Apple Pay Cash lets you send, request, and receive money through the Messages app on your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or Apple Vision Pro. You enter an amount, authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID, and the money moves to the recipient’s Apple Cash card; this article answers the most common questions about setup, limits, fees, and security.
What Is Apple Pay Cash?
Apple Pay Cash is a digital wallet and peer-to-peer payment service built into the Wallet app and Messages. It is separate from Apple Pay, which is used for contactless payments in stores and online. Apple Pay Cash gives you a virtual prepaid debit card (the Apple Cash card) that holds a balance you can spend anywhere Apple Pay is accepted, transfer to a bank account, or use to send money to other Apple users.
The service launched in the United States in December 2017 and has since expanded to the UK (as Apple Cash, with some differences). It runs on the same infrastructure as other peer-to-peer apps, but it is integrated directly into iOS, so you never need to install a third-party app.
How Apple Pay Cash Works
When you send money through Messages, Apple deducts the amount from your Apple Cash balance, or from a linked debit or prepaid card if your balance is insufficient. The recipient receives the money instantly in their Apple Cash card, and they can then spend it, transfer it to a bank, or keep it for future purchases. You can also request money from someone; they get a notification in Messages and can approve or decline.
To set up Apple Pay Cash, you must be at least 18 years old and have a compatible device with the latest iOS. You verify your identity with your name, address, and date of birth, and you must add a debit card to fund transfers. Credit cards cannot be used to send money, because that would be treated as a cash advance by card issuers.
How to Set Up Apple Pay Cash
- Open the Wallet app on your iPhone.
- Tap the Apple Cash card (or the “+ button if it’s not there).
- Follow the on-screen instructions to verify your identity and accept the terms.
- Add a debit card in Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay if you haven’t already.
- Open Messages, start a conversation, tap the “+ button, then tap Apple Cash.
Once set up, you can also use the Apple Cash card in Wallet to pay in stores or online with Apple Pay. The card number is stored securely in the Secure Element, and every transaction requires Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.
Apple Pay Cash Limits and Fees
Apple Pay Cash has several limits you should know:
- Minimum send: $1 (or £1 in the UK).
- Maximum send per message: $10,000 (or £10,000 in the UK).
- Maximum balance: $20,000 (or £20,000 in the UK).
- Weekly send limit: $10,000 (or £10,000 in the UK) – this resets every Sunday at midnight Eastern Time.
- Transfer to bank: Standard transfer (1–3 business days) is free; Instant Transfer costs 1.5% of the amount, with a minimum fee of $0.25 and a maximum of $15.
There is no fee to send or receive money with Apple Pay Cash, and no fee to spend your balance. However, if you use a credit card to fund a transfer (which is not allowed for sending), you would incur cash advance fees. Also, if you receive money and want it in your bank account immediately, you pay the Instant Transfer fee.
Common Problems and How to Fix Them
If Apple Pay Cash isn’t working, try these steps:
- “Apple Cash is not available error: Check that you are in a supported country (US or UK) and that your device has the latest iOS. Sign out of your Apple ID and sign back in, then restart your device.
- Can’t send money: Make sure you have a debit card added in Wallet & Apple Pay, and that your Apple Cash balance plus that card covers the amount. Also verify that you’re not exceeding the weekly limit.
- Identity verification fails: Enter your legal name exactly as it appears on your government ID. If it still fails, contact Apple Support.
- Transfer to bank is stuck: Standard transfers can take 1–3 business days; if it’s longer, check that your bank account details are correct, and try removing and re-adding the bank account.
Apple Pay Cash vs. Other Payment Apps
Apple Pay Cash competes with Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, and Cash App. The main advantage of Apple Pay Cash is deep integration with iOS: you can send money without opening a separate app, and the money appears in your Wallet instantly. It also uses the same security hardware as Apple Pay, with Face ID/Touch ID and a dedicated Secure Element.
However, Apple Pay Cash is only available on Apple devices, and only in the US and UK. Venmo and PayPal work across platforms and have social features, while Zelle is often directly integrated with your bank’s app. Cash App offers a debit card and Bitcoin trading. For most Apple users, Apple Pay Cash is the most seamless option, but for cross-platform or international transfers, you’ll need another service.
Is Apple Pay Cash Safe?
Apple Pay Cash uses the same security architecture as Apple Pay. Your card number is never stored on Apple’s servers; instead, a unique Device Account Number is created and stored in the Secure Element. Each transaction requires authentication, and Apple does not track your spending. If your device is lost, you can use Find My to lock it or erase it, which also disables Apple Pay Cash.
That said, like any peer-to-peer payment system, you should only send money to people you know and trust. Apple Pay Cash does not offer purchase protection; if you send money to a scammer, you may not get it back. Also, be aware of phishing attempts that ask you to send money via Apple Pay Cash – always verify the recipient’s identity through a separate channel.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I add money to Apple Cash?
You can add money from a linked debit card by opening the Wallet app, tapping your Apple Cash card, tapping the “+ (or “Add Money), and entering an amount. The money appears in your Apple Cash balance instantly. There is no fee for adding money.
Can I use Apple Pay Cash without a debit card?
No, you must have at least one debit card on file to set up Apple Pay Cash. The debit card is used to fund transfers when your balance is insufficient, and to add money to your balance. You can also receive money without a debit card, but you won’t be able to spend it until you add one.
Is Apple Pay Cash free?
Sending, receiving, and spending money is free. The only fee is for Instant Transfer to a bank account, which costs 1.5% (minimum $0.25, maximum $15). Standard bank transfers (1–3 business days) are free.
Can I use Apple Pay Cash internationally?
Apple Pay Cash is only available in the United States and the United Kingdom. You can send money to someone in the same country, but you cannot send money to a person in another country, even if they have an Apple device. For international transfers, you’ll need a service like Wise or PayPal.
What happens to my Apple Cash when I get a new iPhone?
Your Apple Cash balance is tied to your Apple ID, not your device. When you set up a new iPhone and sign in with the same Apple ID, your Apple Cash card and balance will appear automatically. You may need to re-verify your identity, but your money is not lost.
